Nasal Myiasis: A Case Report.

Myiasis is caused by invasion of larvae stage of dipterans fly in living tissue of vertebrate host including human and animals. The most important family is Calliphoridae and included Calliphora, Lucilia, Chrysomyia and Cochliomyia genus. A 35-yr-old man with gastric cancer history referred to Golestan Hospital in Ahvaz Southwest of Iran in 2015. He was infected by nasal myiasis from Lucilia spp. in ICU. The genus of third larvae stage was identified by microscopic examination and culture of pupa. The population of flies inducing myiasis should be controlled in hospitals.

Megaselia scalaris causing human intestinal myiasis in Egypt.

Megaselia scalaris is a worldwide distributed insect of medical importance. In a laboratory-based study, stool samples with undefined maggot infestation were examined and the presence of M. scalaris maggots was confirmed. Binocular stereo-microscopy was used for identification of the maggots. Larvae were allowed to develop into adults onto a human stool culture. The larvae and the emerged flies were identified using standard keys. This may be the first report of M. scalaris as a causative agent of human myiasis in Egypt. Details of the third instar larva, pupa and adults were given.

Stage-specific expression of two actin genes in the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti.

Abstract The expression patterns of two muscle-specific actin genes were studied in the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. The coding sequence of AeAct-2 exhibits between 82 and 85% similarity with coding sequences of the Drosophila melanogaster and predicted Anopheles gambiae actin genes. The transcription of the AeAct-2 gene was differentially regulated during developmental stages with higher levels of expression in larvae and lower levels in pupae and adults. The AeAct-2 gene is mainly expressed in the head and body wall tissues. Transcripts of the AeAct-3 gene are not detectable in larv

Bacterial Communities Associated with Whole Eggs and Gut Tissues of Heortia vitessoides Moore (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) Across Developmental Stages and Sexes.

Bacterial communities may affect insect nutrition and development, but their variation across complete metamorphosis remains poorly understood in many forest lepidopteran pests. Heortia vitessoides is an important defoliator of Aquilaria trees, which produce agarwood. In this study, we used 16S rRNA gene sequencing to characterize bacteria associated with whole eggs and gut tissues from larvae, pupae, and adults of H. vitessoides. Whole egg and larval gut samples generally showed higher bacterial richness and diversity than pupal and adult gut samples. Bacterial community composition differed

Critical thermal maxima of Polistes life stages from different climates, with a critical evaluation of methods.

Ambient temperature is a crucial abiotic factor for ectotherms. It strongly influences development, life and abundance, as well as success in colonizing new habitats. In the eusocial paper wasps Polistes sp., colony-forming insects with open nests, the larvae and pupae have limited options to influence their own body temperature in response to high environmental temperatures. They are dependent on measures taken by the adults to keep it at tolerable levels. We determined the upper thermal limits (CTmax) in field populations of three paper wasp species (Polistes dominula, P. gallicus, P. biglum

Insecticide-induced sublethal effect in the fall armyworm is mediated by miR-9993/miR-2a-3p - FPPS/JHAMT - JH molecular module.

The sublethal effect of insecticides can affect the population dynamics of pests by changing the physiological or behavioral changes, which poses a serious threat to the sustainable control of crop pests in the field. However, the molecular regulation mechanism that mediates the sublethal effect of insecticides on crop pests remains unsolved. Here, we show that the sublethal effect of spinetoram and cyantraniliprole on Spodoptera frugiperda is mediated by the molecular module of microRNA-9993/microRNA-2a-3p - farnesyl diphosphate synthase gene (FPPS)/juvenile hormone (JH) acid methyltransferas

Effect of X-ray irradiation on the biological parameters of Xestia c-nigrum.

The sterile insect technique (SIT) is widely used to control Lepidopteran pests by inducing inherited sterility. The noctuid moth Xestia c-nigrum is a polyphagous pest whose subterranean larvae severely injure cereals and some vegetables. The goals of this study were to assess the impact of X-ray irradiation on the development and survival of X. c-nigrum and use the data to select suitable sterilizing doses for potential future use in pest management. Batches of male pupae were exposed to 0 (control), 10, 30, 50, 100, 200, 300, or 400 Gy of X-rays, approximately 24 h before adult emergence. Ex

The effects of a DNA virus infection on the reproductive potential of female tsetse flies, Glossina morsitans centralis and Glossina morsitans morsitans (Diptera: Glossinidae).

Reproductive anomalies associated with the tsetse DNA virus infection in the female tsetse hosts, Glossina morsitans centralis Machado and Glossina morsitans morsitans Westwood, inoculated with the virus during the 3rd instar larval stage were studied and the data compared to those obtained from the control females injected with sterile physiological saline. Virus infected flies had significantly longer first and second pregnancy cycles (P < 0.0001) and produced pupae that were of significantly less weight in milligrams (P < 0.0001) compared to controls. Transmission of the virus to progeny wa

Social capital is associated with lower mosquito vector indices: secondary analysis from a cluster randomised controlled trial of community mobilisation for dengue prevention in Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Control of the Aedes aegypti mosquito is central to reducing the risk of dengue, zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever. Randomised controlled trials, including the Camino Verde trial in Mexico and Nicaragua, demonstrate the convincing impact of community mobilisation interventions on vector indices. These interventions might work through building social capital but little is known about the relationship between social capital and vector indices. METHODS: A secondary analysis used data collected from 45 intervention clusters and 45 control clusters in the impact survey of the Mexican

2La chromosomal inversion enhances thermal tolerance of Anopheles gambiae larvae.

BACKGROUND: The mosquito Anopheles gambiae is broadly distributed throughout sub-Saharan Africa and this contributes to making it the most efficient vector of malaria on the continent. The pervasiveness of this species is hypothesized to originate in local adaptations facilitated by inversion polymorphisms. One inversion, named 2La, is strongly associated with aridity clines in West and Central Africa: while 2La is fixed in arid savannas, the 2L+a arrangement is predominantly found in the rainforest. Ability to survive high temperature exposure is an essential component of aridity tolerance, p

Co-option of immune effectors by the hormonal signalling system triggering metamorphosis in Drosophila melanogaster.

Insect metamorphosis is triggered by the production, secretion and degradation of 20-hydroxyecdysone (ecdysone). In addition to its role in developmental regulation, increasing evidence suggests that ecdysone is involved in innate immunity processes, such as phagocytosis and the induction of antimicrobial peptide (AMP) production. AMP regulation includes systemic responses as well as local responses at surface epithelia that contact with the external environment. At pupariation, Drosophila melanogaster increases dramatically the expression of three AMP genes, drosomycin (drs), drosomycin-like

Cells with loss-of-heterozygosity after exposure to ionizing radiation in Drosophila are culled by p53-dependent and p53-independent mechanisms.

Loss of Heterozygosity (LOH) typically refers to a phenomenon in which diploid cells that are heterozygous for a mutant allele lose their wild type allele through mutations. LOH is implicated in oncogenesis when it affects the remaining wild type copy of a tumor suppressor. Drosophila has been a useful model to identify genes that regulate the incidence of LOH, but most of these studies use adult phenotypic markers such as multiple wing hair (mwh). Here, we describe a cell-autonomous fluorescence-based system that relies on the QF/QS transcriptional module to detect LOH, which may be used in l

Batch Rearing Aedes aegypti.

Standardized rearing methods for the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti are critical to facilitate controlled laboratory studies. This protocol describes a batch rearing protocol for Aedes aegypti stocks that yields healthy eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults in the laboratory for long-term colony maintenance and experimental manipulation. Foundational principles for the rearing and containment of these life cycle stages, as well as steps for mating and blood feeding Aedes aegypti to yield viable eggs for continuous culture or storage, are detailed.

Toxicity of Essential Oils to Diaphania hyalinata (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) and Selectivity to Its Parasitoid Trichospilus pupivorus (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae).

Diaphania hyalinata (Linnaeus, 1767) is one of the main pests of the cucurbit crops. Biological control and botanicals are used in integrated pest management (IPM), especially in agro-ecological agricultures where the use of synthetic pesticides is restricted. Toxicological effects of plant essential oils on target and nontarget organisms should be evaluated to determine its use in IPM. The toxicity of ginger, peppermint, oregano, and thyme essential oils to D. hyalinata eggs, larvae, and pupae and their selectivity to the parasitoid Trichospilus pupivorus and the LC50, LC99 and the relative s

Proliferation of Aedes aegypti in urban environments mediated by the availability of key aquatic habitats.

Aedes aegypti is the main vector of dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever viruses. Controlling populations of vector mosquito species in urban environments is a major challenge and being able to determine what aquatic habitats should be prioritized for controlling Ae. aegypti populations is key to the development of more effective mosquito control strategies. Therefore, our objective was to leverage on the Miami-Dade County, Florida immature mosquito surveillance system based on requested by citizen complaints through 311 calls to determine what are the most important aquatic habitats in

Acaricide treatment affects viral dynamics in Varroa destructor-infested honey bee colonies via both host physiology and mite control.

Honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies are declining, and a number of stressors have been identified that affect, alone or in combination, the health of honey bees. The ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor, honey bee viruses that are often closely associated with the mite, and pesticides used to control the mite population form a complex system of stressors that may affect honey bee health in different ways. During an acaricide treatment using Apistan (plastic strips coated with tau-fluvalinate), we analyzed the infection dynamics of deformed wing virus (DWV), sacbrood virus (SBV), and black quee

Pre-adult mortality in the blowfly Lucilia sericata.

Populations of the blowfly, Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), have a considerable potential for rapid increase; the lifetime reproductive output of each adult female has been estimated to be between 130 and 172 eggs. Nevertheless, in the field, absolute population densities of this species are relatively low. To account for this difference, the levels of mortality affecting the eggs, feeding and wandering larvae and pupae of L. sericata were assessed in the field and laboratory. Percentage egg hatch was dependent on relative humidity with no egg eclosion at humidities below 5

Multimethod combination for age estimation of Sarcophaga peregrina (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) with implications for estimation of the postmortem interval.

Sarcophaga peregrina (Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830) (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) is a forensically important flesh fly with potential value for estimating the minimum postmortem interval (PMImin). Here, the developmental patterns of S. peregrina were investigated at 5 constant temperatures (15-35 °C). Morphological changes at different developmental stages of the pupa were observed at 4 constant temperatures (15-30 °C) by removing the puparium and staining the pupa with hematoxylin and eosin. Furthermore, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were analyzed at 25 °C in the intrapuparial period to estima
