Eye movements affect the perceived speed of visual motion.

Eye movements add a constant displacement to the visual scene, altering the retinal-image velocity. Therefore, in order to recover the real world motion, eye-movement effects must be compensated. If full compensation occurs, the perceived speed of a moving object should be the same regardless of whether the eye is stationary or moving. Using a pursue-fixate procedure in a perceptual matching paradigm, we found that eye movements systematically bias the perceived speed of the distal stimulus, indicating a lack of compensation. Speed judgments depended on the interaction between the distal stimu

A cross-sectional, prospective ocular motor study in 72 patients with Niemann-Pick disease type C.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize ocular motor function in patients with Niemann-Pick disease type C (NPC). METHODS: In a multicontinental, cross-sectional study we characterized ocular-motor function in 72 patients from 12 countries by video-oculography. Interlinking with disease severity, we also searched for ocular motor biomarkers. Our study protocol comprised reflexive and self-paced saccades, smooth pursuit, and gaze-holding in horizontal and vertical planes. Data were compared with those of 158 healthy controls (HC). RESULTS: Some 98.2% of patients generated vertical saccades below the 95% C

Eye movement disorders in multiple sclerosis and optic neuritis.

Horizontal saccadic and smooth pursuit eye movements were studied in 84 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and 21 patients with optic neuritis (ON). The MS patients were clinically classified as 'definite', 'probable', or 'possible'; subclinical eye movement disorder was found in 80 per cent of the definite, 74 per cent of the probable and 60 per cent of the possible category. Five of the ON patients (25 per cent) showed a subclinical eye movement deficit; these 5 were young patients with a recent history of ON. In a group of 27 MS patients with symptoms of spinal cord involvement only, 14

Severe destruction of the neural integration mechanism for upward eye movements in bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia.

The visually elicited saccades and smooth pursuits of a 24-year-old man with bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia were recorded with an infrared limbus reflection technique. Although the amplitude-peak velocity relationship of saccades appeared to be normal, all the upward saccades were hypermetric and were followed by postsaccadic exponential drifts. The time constant of the postsaccadic exponential drifts was 248 +/- 19.5 ms (mean +/- SD). Upward pursuit eye movements were also severely disturbed, and only movements with a short duration (mean 113.8 ms) and low gain (mean 0.51) were freque

Effect of alcohol and marijuana on eye movements.

The effects of alcohol and marijuana (tetrahydrocannabinol-THC) on saccades, smooth pursuit, and optokinetic nystagmus were quantitatively evaluated in 24 normal subjects using electro-oculographic recordings. Each subject was given an initial trial run and then tested three times (at weekly intervals) with either 0.0microgram THC or 100 microgram THC/kg bodyweight while at three different blood alcohol concentrations (0.0, 0.05 and 0.1%). A 2X3 factorial design was used. Saccades and smooth pursuit were induced by a dot of light moving in steps and ramps on a modified television set. Optokine

Rapid responses to reach errors are equally strong during fixation and visual pursuit.

When reaching to a foveated target, peripheral vision of the hand can be used to make rapid, automatic adjustments to the ongoing reach movement, with feedback gain being sensitive to features of the task and environment. These rapid corrective responses are also observed when gaze is directed to a stationary "gaze" target located away from the reach target. In everyday contexts, reaching often occurs concurrently with other visual or visuomotor tasks, such as tracking a moving target. Yet it remains unclear whether engaging in such tasks affects the use of peripheral vision for hand guidance.

Motion adaptation reveals that the motion vector is represented in multiple coordinate frames.

Accurately perceiving the velocity of an object during smooth pursuit is a complex challenge: although the object is moving in the world, it is almost still on the retina. Yet we can perceive the veridical motion of a visual stimulus in such conditions, suggesting a nonretinal representation of the motion vector. To explore this issue, we studied the frames of representation of the motion vector by evoking the well known motion aftereffect during smooth-pursuit eye movements (SPEM). In the retinotopic configuration, due to an accompanying smooth pursuit, a stationary adapting random-dot stimul

The flash-lag phenomenon: object motion and eye movements.

An object flashed briefly in a given location, the moment another moving object arrives in the same location, is perceived by observers as lagging behind the moving object (flash-lag effect). Does the flash-lag effect occur if the retinal image of the moving object is rendered stationary by smooth pursuit of the moving object? Does the flash-lag effect occur if the retinal image of a stationary object is caused to move by smooth-pursuit eye movements? A disk was briefly flashed in the center of a moving ring such that the ring center was completely 'filled' by the disk. In this display, observ

Ipsilateral Saccade Hypometria and Contralateral Saccadic Pursuit in a Focal Brainstem Lesion: a Rare Oculomotor Pattern.

Eye movement examination may be used to rapidly differentiate peripheral and central vestibular syndromes in patients with acute unsteadiness. The analysis of oculomotor impairments may also support the accurate localization of cerebral lesions, particularly those in the brainstem, that are often loosely defined by cerebral MRIs. Saccades, smooth pursuit, and nystagmus were recorded with video-oculography in a patient who had developed sudden vertigo as a consequence of a focal lesion in the depth of the brachium pontis. The patient had shown a previously unreported pattern of eye movement imp

Early Cerebellar Network Shifting in Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 6.

Spinocerebellar ataxia 6 (SCA6), an autosomal dominant degenerative disease, is characterized by diplopia, gait ataxia, and incoordination due to severe progressive degeneration of Purkinje cells in the vestibulo- and spinocerebellum. Ocular motor deficits are common, including difficulty fixating on moving objects, nystagmus and disruption of smooth pursuit movements. In presymptomatic SCA6, there are alterations in saccades and smooth-pursuit movements. We sought to assess functional and structural changes in cerebellar connectivity associated with a visual task, hypothesizing that gradual c

Diagnosis of Parkinson's disease by eliciting trait-specific eye movements in multi-visual tasks.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder, and eye movement abnormalities are a significant symptom of its diagnosis. In this paper, we developed a multi-task driven by eye movement in a virtual reality (VR) environment to elicit PD-specific eye movement abnormalities. The abnormal features were subsequently modeled by using the proposed deep learning algorithm to achieve an auxiliary diagnosis of PD. METHODS: We recruited 114 PD patients and 125 healthy controls and collected their eye-tracking data in a VR environment. Participants completed a series of specific V

Oculomotor abnormalities in myoclonic tremor: a comparison with spinocerebellar ataxia type 6.

In the present study, eye movements are recorded in two patient groups with an autosomal dominantly inherited cerebellar disorder, i.e. spinocerebellar ataxia type 6 (SCA6) and familial cortical myoclonic tremor with epilepsy (FCMTE). In SCA6 and FCMTE patients striking similarities with the extensive Purkinje cell changes in the cerebellar cortex were described, but the two disorders have a distinctive clinical picture. SCA6 is a late-onset cerebellar syndrome, with relatively minimal brain stem and cerebral cortex symptoms. In contrast, FCMTE is clinically characterized by cortical symptomat

A new oculomotor model demystifies "Remarkable Saccades".

Hering's Law of binocular eye movement control guides most oculomotor research and supports diagnosis and treatment of clinical eye misalignment (strabismus). It states that all eye movements are controlled by a unitary conjugate signal and a unitary vergence signal that sum. Recent evidence of temporally asynchronous eye rotations during vergence (Chandna et al., 2021) challenges the viability of a unitary vergence signal. Helmholtz proposed an explanation of binocular control that does not require a vergence system, that the eyes are controlled independently. Yet independent control fails to

Adaptive integration of self-motion and goals in posterior parietal cortex.

Rats readily switch between foraging and more complex navigational behaviors such as pursuit of other rats or prey. These tasks require vastly different tracking of multiple behaviorally significant variables including self-motion state. To explore whether navigational context modulates self-motion tracking, we examined self-motion tuning in posterior parietal cortex neurons during foraging versus visual target pursuit. Animals performing the pursuit task demonstrate predictive processing of target trajectories by anticipating and intercepting them. Relative to foraging, pursuit yields multipl

Specific Aspects of Eye Movement Reactions as Markers of Cognitive Control Disorders in Patients with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (Review).

Multiple studies in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) became the basis for revealing selective attention, inhibitory control, and working memory impairments, which correlates with an imbalance in the activity of the cortico-striatal-thalamic-cortical circuit associated with maintenance of cognitive control functions. Patients with OCD often demonstrate changes in the parameters of target-oriented eye movement reactions being a consequence of a possible impairment of the cognitive control neurophysiological framework. This review summarizes and analyzes data on cognitive control

Controlled sleep deprivation as an experimental medicine model of schizophrenia: An update.

In recent years there has been a surge of interest and corresponding accumulation of knowledge about the role of sleep disturbance in schizophrenia. In this review, we provide an update on the current status of experimentally controlled sleep deprivation (SD) as an experimental medicine model of psychosis, and also consider, given the complexity and heterogeneity of schizophrenia, whether this (state) model can be usefully combined with other state or trait model systems to more powerfully model the pathophysiology of psychosis. We present evidence of dose-dependent aberrations that qualitativ

Attenuation of perceived motion smear during vergence and pursuit tracking.

When the eyes move, the images of stationary objects sweep across the retina. Despite this motion of the retinal image and the substantial integration of visual signals across time, physically stationary objects typically do not appear to be smeared during eye movements. Previous studies indicated that the extent of perceived motion smear is smaller when a stationary target is presented during pursuit or saccadic eye movements than when comparable motion of the retinal image occurs during steady fixation. In this study, we compared the extent of perceived motion smear for a stationary target d

Motion coherence affects human perception and pursuit similarly.

Pursuit and perception both require accurate information about the motion of objects. Recovering the motion of objects by integrating the motion of their components is a difficult visual task. Successful integration produces coherent global object motion, while a failure to integrate leaves the incoherent local motions of the components unlinked. We compared the ability of perception and pursuit to perform motion integration by measuring direction judgments and the concomitant eye-movement responses to line-figure parallelograms moving behind stationary rectangular apertures. The apertures wer
