Study of Thermal Behavior of Moxa Floss Using Thermogravimetric and Pyrolysis-GC/MS Analyses.

Moxa floss is a type of biomass used as the main combustion material in moxibustion, a therapy that applies heat from moxa floss combustion to points or body areas for treatment. Safety concerns regarding moxa smoke have been raised in recent years. Since moxa floss is the source material in moxibustion, its thermal behavior and pyrolysis products would be related to the products formed in moxa smoke. This work aims to understand the thermal behavior of moxa floss and investigate the pyrolysis products generated from moxa floss combustion. Six commercial moxa floss samples of 3 storage years a

Emission factor of exhaust gas constituents during the pyrolysis of zinc chloride immersed biosolid.

Pyrolysis enables ZnCl2 immersed biosolid to be reused, but some hazardous air pollutants are emitted during this process. Physical characteristics of biosolid adsorbents were investigated in this work. In addition, the constituents of pyrolytic exhaust were determined to evaluate the exhaust characteristics. Results indicated that the pyrolytic temperature was higher than 500 °C, the specific surface area was >900 m(2)/g, and the total pore volume was as much as 0.8 cm(3)/g at 600 °C. For non-ZnCl2 immersed biosolid pyrolytic exhaust, VOC emission factors increased from 0.677 to 3.170 mg-VOCs

Tailoring biochar porosity via fermentation-pyrolysis integration: Trade-offs between pore creation and blockage.

Biochar properties are governed by feedstock composition and pyrolysis conditions, yet pretreatment strategies that are simultaneously effective and sustainable remain scarce. To address this gap, this study systematically investigates the coupled effects of fermentation duration (0-40 d) and pyrolysis temperature (400-700 °C) on the pore structure of corn stover-derived biochar. Pyrolysis temperature governs specific surface area, with non-fermented samples reaching 134.2 m2·g-1 at 700 °C, but extending fermentation to 40 d reduces SBET by 66 % and microporosity by 73 % relative to the non-fe

Production of Biogasoline from Plastic Waste through Pyrolysis Using a Temperature-Controlled Condenser Technique.

Plastic waste has become an environmental problem because it has low recyclability, and it takes time to degrade. Pyrolysis of these wastes represents a promising alternative to transform waste plastic bags into useful fuels. The focus of this work is on the production of bio-oil derived from used plastic bags, via a fixed-bed pyrolysis unit coupled with a hot biochar bed and temperature-controlled condensation setup. The operation temperature of this setup is set at 500 °C, with condensation temperature in the range from -10 to -40 °C, in order to investigate vapor fractionation behavior as w

Catalytic pyrolysis of polypropylene over acid-modified coal gangue: product distribution and catalyst performance.

To address the dual challenges of coal gangue solid waste and waste plastic pollution, this work develops a series of coal gangue-based catalysts via hydrochloric acid modification of coal gangue samples with different iron contents, and applies them to the catalytic pyrolysis of polypropylene (PP). The results showed that, compared with unmodified coal gangue, the acid-modified catalyst increased the PP pyrolysis gas yield by up to 20.06 wt%, and the gas product exhibited potential as an alternative to natural gas. The initial decomposition temperature of PP was reduced by up to 78 °C. The qu

Preparation and Formation Mechanism of Carbon Nanotubes via Coal Pyrolysis Using Alkaline Potassium Catalysts.

In this study, two potassium-based alkaline compounds, KOH and K2CO3, were utilized as catalysts for the pyrolysis of bituminous coal to directly synthesize carbon nanotubes (CNTs). During the conventional reaction process, CNTs were observed as unusual products, with respective contents reaching 9.43 and 8.98 wt.% in the pyrolysis products. The results indicate that at temperatures exceeding 600 °C, KOH undergoes complete conversion into K2CO3. The melting point of K2CO3 (890 °C) serves as the critical temperature for the formation of CNTs. Under the reducing atmosphere provided by -CH2- and

Enhanced aromatics production via catalytic pyrolysis of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) using ZSM-5 catalysts.

The valorization of biodegradable plastics into high-value chemicals offers a sustainable pathway for plastic waste management. In this study, catalytic pyrolysis of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB), a representative bioplastic, was systematically investigated over ZSM-5 zeolites with varying degrees of mesoporosity, aiming to maximize the BTEX yield. Catalyst characterization confirmed that mesopore introduction increased external surface area and accessibility of acid sites, while relatively reducing strong Brønsted acidity. Catalytic performance was evaluated, as well as the effects of differe

Hydrothermal-enhanced pyrolysis for efficient NOX reduction and biochar valorization from food waste digestate.

Pyrolysis has emerged as a promising technology for valorizing digestate resulting from the anaerobic digestion of food waste. However, the high NOX emissions during pyrolysis limit its application. This study proposed a hydrothermal coupled pyrolysis process to control the element transfer in digestate during biochar production. The efficient reduction of NOX emissions and the improvement of biochar adsorbability were realized. The hydrothermal process reduced the nitrogen content in solid digestate by 49.10 %-81.79 %, thus reducing the NOX precursors in syngas and the N-containing substances

Screening of Commercial Organic Solvent Nanofiltration Membranes for Purification of Plastic Waste Pyrolysis Liquids.

Increasing consumption rates of plastics, combined with the waste generated from their production, leads to several environmental problems. Presently, plastic recycling takes account of only about 10% of the plastic waste, which is achieved mainly through mechanical recycling. Chemical recycling methods, such as pyrolysis, could significantly increase overall recycling rates and reduce the need for the production of fossil-based chemicals. Produced pyrolysis oil can be used for the production of benzene, toluene and xylene (BTX) through catalytic upgrading or for the production of alkanes if u

Enhanced adsorption of aromatic VOCs on hydrophobic porous biochar produced via microwave rapid pyrolysis.

To customize biochar suitable for efficient adsorption of benzene derivatives, this study presents programmed microwave pyrolysis to produce hydrophobic porous biochar with low-dose ferric chloride. Designated control of the ramping rates in the carbonization stage and the temperatures in the activation stage were conducive to enlarging the specific surface area. Iron species, including amorphous iron minerals, could create small-scale hotspots during microwave pyrolysis to promote microporous structure development. Compared with conventional pyrolysis, programmed microwave pyrolysis could inc

Molecular dynamics study on evaporation of metal nitrate-containing nanodroplets in flame spray pyrolysis.

Flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) provides an advantageous synthetic route for LiNi1-x-yCoxMnyO2 (NCM) materials, which are one of the most practical and promising cathode materials for Li-ion batteries. However, a detailed understanding of the NCM nanoparticle formation mechanisms through FSP is lacking. To shed light on the evaporation of NCM precursor droplets in FSP, in this work, we employ classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to explore the dynamic evaporation process of nanodroplets composed of metal nitrates (including LiNO3, Ni(NO3)2, Co(NO3)2, and Mn(NO3)2 as solutes) and water (as

Clay mineral as catalysis for controlling the nitrogen containing pollutants during sewage sludge pyrolysis.

Pyrolysis technology is considered one of the most promising processes for the environmentally friendly disposal of sewage sludge (SS), as it can neutralize pathogens, reduce hazardous substances, and promote the immobilization of heavy metals. However, nitrogen-containing gases produced in SS pyrolysis can be converted to nitrogen oxides, causing serious environmental pollution. In this study, we investigated the evolution of the nitrogen (N) element in rapid pyrolysis of SS and explored the effect of clay minerals (attapulgite, montmorillonite, and kaolin) in regulating N conversion.
