Validity and Reliability of Handheld Dynamometry to Assess Isometric Hamstrings and Quadriceps Strength at Varying Muscle Lengths.

CONTEXT: The hamstrings are the most commonly injured muscle in sports and are especially injury prone in lengthened positions. Measuring knee muscle strength in such positions could be relevant to establish injury risk. Handheld dynamometry has been shown to be a valid, reliable, and practical tool to measure isometric muscle strength clinically. The aim of this study was to assess the validity and reliability of the assessment of isometric knee muscle strength with a handheld dynamometer (HHD) at various muscle lengths, by modifying the hip and knee angles during testing. DESIGN: Concurrent

Intra- and interindividual reliability of muscle pain induced by an intramuscular injection of hypertonic saline injection into the quadriceps.

BACKGROUND: Intramuscular injections of hypertonic saline are commonly used to induce experimental muscle pain, but reliability data on this technique are lacking. This study investigated the intra- and interindividual reliability of pain measures from a hypertonic saline injection into the vastus lateralis. METHODS: Fourteen healthy participants (6 female) attended three laboratory visits where they received an intramuscular injection of 1 mL hypertonic saline into the vastus lateralis. Changes in pain intensity were recorded on an electronic visual analogue scale, and pain quality was asses

Effect of Knee Angle and Quadriceps Muscle Force on Shear-Wave Elastography Measurements at the Patellar Tendon.

Shear-wave elastography (SWE) is a non-invasive imaging technique that provides estimates of tissue stiffness via shear-wave speed measurements. No standardized protocol currently exists for SWE of the patellar tendon, which may be influenced by knee angle and quadriceps muscle force. In this study, the reliability of SWE in cadaveric patellar tendons was examined at three knee angles (0°, 30° and 60°) and three quadriceps muscle forces (0, 50 and 100 N). Shear-wave speed was significantly higher at a knee angle of 60° than at 0° or 30° (increases of 7% and 9%, respectively), and when the quad

Use of dynamic tests of muscle function and histomorphometry of quadriceps muscle biopsies in the investigation of patients with chronic alcohol misuse and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Ischaemic lactate/ammonia tests, serum carnosinase and creatine kinase assays and percutaneous needle muscle biopsies were performed on 10 patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), and 10 with chronic alcohol misuse complaining of muscular symptoms. Basal serum lactate levels were significantly elevated in the alcohol misusers compared to the CFS patients, but all were within the reference range. Lactate profiles after ischaemic forearm exercise did not differ significantly for the two patient groups. In one patient previously diagnosed as having CFS, myoadenylate deaminase deficiency was

Sarcopenia diagnosed by ultrasound-assessed quadriceps muscle thickness and handgrip strength predicts mortality in patients on hemodialysis.

BACKGROUND: Estimation of muscle mass is a pivotal component in the diagnosis of protein-energy wasting and sarcopenia. While bioimpedance spectroscopy is a widely  accepted technique for the assessment of lean tissue related to the diagnosis of sarcopenia, to date skeletal muscle ultrasound (US) has not gained full acceptance for this purpose. The aim of this study was to assess the predictive value for mortality of the indexed thickness of the quadriceps vastus intermedius, as measured by US, compared to lean tissue index as estimated by bioimpedance spectroscopy, both combined with handgrip

Evaluation of Gait Speed after Applying Kinesio Tape on Quadriceps Femoris Muscle in Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis is a chronic degenerative disease, known as the most common cause of difficulty walking in older adults and subsequently is associated with slow walking. Functional decline, increased risk of falls and the presence of pain are, in many studies, related to the muscle weakness caused by osteoarthritis especially weakness of the quadriceps muscles. Many studies have shown that the strength of the quadriceps femoris muscle can affect gait, by improving or weakening it. Kinesio Tape is a physiotherapeutic technique, which reduces pain and increases muscular strength

Changes in voluntary quadriceps activation predict changes in muscle strength and gait biomechanics following knee joint effusion.

BACKGROUND: It has been hypothesized that arthrogenic muscle inhibition is responsible for altering physical function following knee injury. The association between the onset of arthrogenic muscle inhibition, measured using voluntary quadriceps activation, and changes in muscle strength and gait biomechanics are unknown. METHODS: Outcomes were collected before and following a 60 ml experimental knee effusion in eighteen healthy participants. Voluntary quadriceps activation was the predictor variable, while the criterion variable included, maximal voluntary isometric strength, peak knee flexio

Characterization of quadriceps muscle injuries in National Basketball Association athletes and effects on player performance following injury.

BACKGROUND: In basketball, quadriceps strains and contusions are common due to the muscle’s role in knee extension and hip flexion, with the rectus femoris most prone to injury because it crosses both joints, making it vulnerable to eccentric loading. The purpose of this study was to describe the epidemiology of quadriceps injuries in National Basketball Association (NBA) players, assess changes in player performance statistics after injury, and to determine factors that were associated with a greater or equal player efficiency rating (PER) and usage percentage (USG%) 1 year and 2 years after

Relationship Between Postural Stability and Proprioception, Pain, Quadriceps Strength, and Muscle Tightness in Athletes With Patellar Tendinopathy.

BACKGROUND: Athletes with patellar tendinopathy (PT) have postural stability deficits; however, the underlying mechanisms and factors responsible remain unknown. The effect on postural stability in PT of decreased quadriceps strength, altered proprioception, lower-limb muscle tightness, and knee pain, which explain postural stability deficiency in other populations, is uninvestigated. HYPOTHESIS: Proprioceptive acuity, muscle tightness, quadriceps strength, and pain predict postural stability in athletes with PT. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional comparative study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 2.

Alternative assessment of knee joint muscle balance of soccer players through total work-based hamstring: quadriceps ratios.

Isokinetic hamstring-to-quadriceps (H:Q) ratios are frequently used to assess knee muscle strength imbalances and risk of injuries/re-injuries. The use of peak torque (PT) or total work (TW) to estimate joint stability may lead to different results because of the differences between these two neuromuscular variables. Thus, the current study aimed to compare the conventional and functional H:Q ratios calculated by PT and TW. Ninety-three male professional soccer players from Brazilian first division teams performed isokinetic concentric and eccentric contractions of the quadriceps and the hamst
