Detecting and Preventing Fraudulent Participation in Qualitative Research: Content Analysis of Two Multisite Studies.

BACKGROUND: The use of web-based approaches to identify, recruit, enroll, survey, and interview health-related research participants has increased over time, with rapid acceleration since the COVID-19 pandemic. These approaches can make research more accessible to a broader population, but also increase the risk of fraudulent or imposter participants infiltrating research studies. While this threat has been discussed extensively in quantitative survey research, less has been reported in qualitative and mixed methods studies. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify recurring patterns of fraudul

Older adults' perspectives on big data use in hip fracture research: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Big data approaches are increasingly applied to hip fracture research, linking clinical, imaging, environmental and genomic data. Yet the views of older adults, whose data underpin these efforts, remain under-explored. METHODS: Focused, semi-structured interviews were conducted with older adults recruited from an orthopaedic ward at an inner city teaching hospital. Eligibility included age 60 years or older and a hip fracture within the previous three months. Fifteen participants took part. Interviews were audio recorded at the bedside, transcribed verbatim, anonymised and analyse

Qualitative research about public health risk perceptions on ambient air pollution. A review study.

BACKGROUND: Understanding public health risk perceptions is essential in efficient environmental health management. In the light of the negative impact of air pollution on health and the direct and indirect mediation of this impact through risk perceptions, it is crucial to better understand the lay perceptions of air pollution. Since qualitative research methods are well suited for this aim, the central objective of this study is to present a review of qualitative research articles in the field of environmental epidemiology that investigate health risk perceptions of ambient air pollution sin

Utilizing the focused conversation method in qualitative public health research: a team-based approach.

BACKGROUND: Qualitative research studies are becoming increasingly necessary to understand the complex challenges in the healthcare setting. Successfully integrating interdisciplinary teams of investigators can be challenging, as investigators inherently view data through their disciplinary lens. Thus, new methods, such as focused conservation, are needed to facilitate qualitative data analysis by interdisciplinary teams. The purpose of this manuscript is to provide a clear description of how we implemented the focused conversation method to facilitate an organized data-driven discussion that

Multinational Qualitative Research Study Exploring the Patient Experience of Raynaud's Phenomenon in Systemic Sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) is the most common manifestation of systemic sclerosis (SSc). RP is an episodic phenomenon, not easily assessed in the clinic, leading to reliance on self-report. A thorough understanding of the patient experience of SSc-RP is essential to ensuring that patient-reported outcome (PRO) instruments capture domains important to the target patient population. We report the findings of an international qualitative research study investigating the patient experience of SSc-RP. METHODS: Focus groups of SSc patients were conducted across 3 scleroderma centers in th

Engaging men with penile cancer in qualitative research: reflections from an interview-based study.

AIM: To explore the challenges of engaging men with penile cancer in qualitative interview research. BACKGROUND: Qualitative interviewing offers an ideal tool for exploring men's experiences of illness, complementing and providing context to gendered health inequalities identified in epidemiological research on men. But conducting interviews with men can be challenging and embarking on a qualitative interview study with males can feel like a daunting task, given the limited amount of practical, gender-sensitive guidance for researchers. Reflecting on a researcher's experience of conducting qu

Rapid Qualitative Approaches in Pandemic Research: Protocol for an Exploratory Qualitative Multimethod Study (VERDIQual) on Mpox in Italy, Nigeria, Thailand, and the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: Recent mpox outbreaks have underscored significant gaps in global preparedness for emerging and re-emerging infections. These outbreaks have disproportionately affected vulnerable and marginalized populations, exposing the weaknesses of health systems, particularly in resource-limited settings. The global spread of mpox beyond endemic African countries in 2022 and the emergence of a new Clade Ib in 2024 emphasize the pressing need for comprehensive and context-specific public health responses. We outline the protocol for an innovative multimethod qualitative study (VERDIQual [SARS-

Perspectives of Clinical Researchers on Engagement With Digital Mental Health Interventions: Qualitative Interview Study.

BACKGROUND: While technology can widen access to mental health treatments, digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) frequently have low engagement and high dropout rates. A better understanding of user engagement with DMHIs can help researchers design technologies that users are more likely to benefit from. However, a major challenge is that the term "engagement" is very broad, not well-understood, and operationalized differently across projects. Few studies have explored how clinical researchers define and operationalize engagement in DMHI research. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated how

Perspectives on Contraceptive Research for Individuals with Increased Thrombosis Risk: A Qualitative Exploration of Patients and Clinicians.

OBJECTIVES: Although most progestin-only contraceptives are generally considered safe for most patients at increased risk of arterial and venous thrombosis, patients and clinicians may be wary of their use based on limited studies. Large prospective contraceptive studies with primary data collection would improve the evidence base for people at increased thrombosis risk. We therefore aimed to find solutions for recruitment and long-term retention of representative participants in large prospective studies of contraceptives for patients at increased risk of thrombosis, identify patient- and cli

Exploring research capacity and capability in a local authority: qualitative insights from leaders and staff.

BACKGROUND: Local authorities in England are ideally placed to address the social determinants of health in the communities they serve. An evidence-led approach to developing programmes and policies to tackle determinants of health is critical to ensuring outcomes are attained and resources are used appropriately. Previous studies though suggest that local authorities do not always use evidence consistently in their decision-making processes. This paper seeks therefore to explore perceived research capability and capacity across one local authority in northern England to understand how researc

Exploring the experiences of neonatal parents for neonatal palliative care: a meta-synthesis of qualitative research.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal palliative care (NPC) represents a deeply emotional and ethically complex experience for families confronting the anticipated or actual loss of an infant. Although the clinical dimensions of NPC are increasingly acknowledged, there remains a lack of comprehensive synthesis regarding how parents perceive and construct meaning from this profoundly distressing journey. AIM: This study aims to synthesize qualitative evidence on parental experiences during neonatal palliative care, with a focus on their emotional responses, decision-making processes, sources of support, and pa

The multi-subject cooperation mechanism of home care for the disabled elderly in Beijing: a qualitative research.

BACKGROUND: Currently, population aging has been an obstacle and the spotlight for all countries. Compared with developed countries, problems caused by China's aging population are more prominent. Beijing, as a typical example, is characterized by advanced age and high disability rate, making this capital city scramble to take control of this severe problem. The main types of care for the disabled elderly are classified as home care, institutional care, and community care. With the obvious shortage of senior care institutions, most disabled elderly people are prone to choose home care. This ki

Functional imaging correlates of childhood trauma: A qualitative review of past research and emerging trends.

Childhood trauma exposure is common and is associated with poor clinical outcomes in adolescence along with mental health and sociodemographic challenges in adulthood. While many strategies exist to investigate the biological imprint of childhood trauma exposure, functional neuroimaging is a robust and growing technology for non-invasive studies of brain activity following traumatic experience and the relationship of childhood trauma exposure with psychopathology, cognition, and behavior. In this review, we discuss three popular approaches for discerning functional neural correlates to early l
