Life-threatening situations of hyperkalaemia are often caused by renal failure, hyperglycaemia or medication. However pseudohyperkalaemia, a falsely elevated potassium concentration, is usually caused by haemolysis, repeated clenching of the fist during venepuncture or abnormal cell numbers. Another rare cause of pseudohyperkalaemia is familial pseudohyperkalaemia, an autosomal dominantly inherited trait, with increased leakage of potassium from erythrocytes. Under normal in vivo conditions, this increased leakage is compensated by augmented activity of the Na(+)/K(+) ATPase pump. However, aft

Holstein and Jersey cows were mated to 4 Holstein (H) bulls and 4 Jersey (J) bulls to create HH, HJ, JH, and JJ genetic groups (sire breed listed first) in a diallele crossbreeding scheme. Calvings (n = 756) occurred in research herds in Virginia, Kentucky, and North Carolina with 243, 166, 194, and 153 calvings in the HH, HJ, JH, and JJ groups, respectively. Birth weights (BW), dystocia scores (0 for unassisted and 1 for assisted), and stillbirth (0 for alive or 1 for dead within 48 h) were recorded at calving. Gestation lengths (GL) were determined from breeding dates. An animal model was us

Genetic evaluation and selection is one strategy for improving female reproductive performance. Many producers use synchronization of ovulation or estrus to manage reproduction. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of reproductive synchronization on genetic parameter estimates of days to first breeding (DFB), days open (DO), and pregnancy rate at 120 d postpartum (PR120). Data were collected from 64 producers participating in an artificial insemination progeny testing program and using Dairy Comp 305 herd management software to record reproductive treatments and events. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and reading disability (RD) are common highly heritable disorders of childhood, which frequently co-occur. Data from twin and family studies suggest that this overlap is, in part, due to shared genetic underpinnings. Here, we report the first genome-wide linkage analysis of measures of reading ability in children with ADHD, using a sample of 233 affected sibling pairs who previously participated in a genome-wide scan for susceptibility loci in ADHD. Quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis of a composite reading factor defined from three highly co

High blood pressure is the heritable risk factor for cardiovascular and kidney diseases. Genome-wide association studies(GWAS) on blood pressure traits increase our understanding of its underlying genetic basis. However, a large proportion of GWAS was conducted in Europeans, and some roadblocks deprive other populations to benefit from their results. Iranians population with a high degree of genomic specificity has not been represented in international databases to date, so to fill the gap, we explored the effects of 652,919 genomic variants on Systolic Blood Pressure (SBP), Diastolic Blood Pr

Root structures secreting carboxylates and phosphatases are thought to enhance a plant's phosphorus (P) acquisition. But do closely related species with and without such structures really differ in root exudation, P mobilization, or ecological niche? We investigated this by comparing 23 European Carex species with and without 'dauciform roots' (DRs). Plants grown in pots with sand were screened for DR formation, phosphatase activities, carboxylate exudation, and utilization of various organic and inorganic P compounds. Ecological niches were compared using ecological indicator values and nutri

Individuals with high trait anxiety form a non-clinical group with a predisposition for an anxiety-related bias in emotional and cognitive processing that is considered by some to be a prerequisite for psychiatric disorders. Anxious individuals tend to experience more worry under uncertainty, and processing uncertain information is an important, but often overlooked factor in anxiety. So, we decided to explore the brain correlates of processing uncertain information in individuals with high trait anxiety using the learn-test paradigm. Behaviorally, the percentages on memory test and the likeli

Test-day records for protein yield, protein percent, fat percent and somatic cell score combined with diagnoses for health traits from 19,870 Holstein cows kept in 9 large-scale contract herds in the region of Thuringia, Germany, were used to infer genetic parameters. From an electronic database system for recording diagnoses, 15 health disorders with highest incidences were extracted and grouped into the following 5 disease categories: claw disorders, mastitis, female fertility, metabolism, and ectoparasites. In a bayesian approach, threshold methodology was applied for binary distributed hea

BACKGROUND: Vector susceptibility to Plasmodium infection is treated primarily as a vector trait, although it is a composite trait expressing the joint occurrence of the parasite and the vector with genetic contributions of both. A comprehensive approach to assess the specific contribution of genetic and environmental variation on "vector susceptibility" is lacking. Here we developed and implemented a simple scheme to assess the specific contributions of the vector, the parasite, and the environment to "vector susceptibility." To the best of our knowledge this is the first study that employs s

BACKGROUND: The TPH2 gene encodes the enzyme responsible for serotonin (5-HT) synthesis in the Central Nervous System (CNS). Stereotypic and repetitive behaviors are influenced by 5-HT, and initial studies report an association of TPH2 alleles with childhood-onset obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and with autism. GLO1 encodes glyoxalase I, the enzyme which detoxifies alpha-oxoaldehydes such as methylglyoxal in all living cells. The A111E GLO1 protein variant, encoded by SNP C419A, was identified in autopsied autistic brains and proposed to act as an autism susceptibility factor. Hyperseroto

Height has been used for more than a century as a model by which to understand quantitative genetic variation in humans. We report that the entire genome appears to contribute to its additive genetic variance. We used genotypes and phenotypes of 11,214 sibling pairs from three countries to partition additive genetic variance across the genome. Using genome scans to estimate the proportion of the genomes of each chromosome from siblings that were identical by descent, we estimated the heritability of height contributed by each of the 22 autosomes and the X chromosome. We show that additive gene

The A/WySnJ mouse, but not the related A/J strain, has peripheral B-lymphocyte deficiency and mastocytosis. Minimally, two quantitative trait loci (QTLs) control the B-cell deficiency in (A/WySnJ x CAST/Ei)F2 intercross mice; one of them, Bcmd-1, mapped to Chromosome (Chr) 15. Several QTLs controlled the mastocytosis in this intercross, and it was not possible to determine whether any of them co-segregated with Bcmd-1. We have now mapped a second QTL controlling the B-cell deficiency, Bcmd-2, to Chr 4. Furthermore, we narrowed the map position of Bcmd-1 to <2.0 cM. Both QTLs have been confirme

BACKGROUND: Long-sleep (LS) and short-sleep (SS) mice, initially selected for differential sensitivity to ethanol, also exhibit differential sensitivity to propofol. By interbreeding LS and SS mice to obtain progeny whose chromosomes are a patchwork of the LS and SS chromosomes, the authors determined whether differential propofol sensitivity cosegregates with any particular chromosomal region(s). Such cosegregation is the essence of genetic linkage mapping and a first step toward isolating a gene that can modulate propofol sensitivity in mammals. A gene underlying a quantitative trait such as

Adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA) in rats is a widely used autoimmune experimental model with many features similar to rheumatoid arthritis (RA). To identify potential genetic regulatory mechanisms in RA, we conducted genome-wide linkage analysis in F2 progeny of arthritis-susceptible Dark Agouti (DA) and relatively resistant Fischer 344 (F344) inbred rats. We compared the data with our previously reported investigation of collagen-induced arthritis (CIA), which was expanded in the follow-up study reported in this work. We found two quantitative trait loci (QTLs) in common, i.e., Aia1/Cia1 on c

The observation that variants regulating gene expression (expression quantitative trait loci, eQTL) are at a high frequency among SNPs associated with complex traits has made the genome-wide characterization of gene expression an important tool in genetic mapping studies of such traits. As part of a study to identify genetic loci contributing to bipolar disorder and other quantitative traits in members of 26 pedigrees from Costa Rica and Colombia, we measured gene expression in lymphoblastoid cell lines derived from 786 pedigree members. The study design enabled us to comprehensively reconstru

Microbial endosymbiosis is widespread in animals, with major ecological and evolutionary implications. Successful symbiosis relies on efficient vertical transmission through host generations. However, when symbionts negatively affect host fitness, hosts are expected to evolve suppression of symbiont effects or transmission. Here, we show that sex chromosomes control vertical transmission of feminizing Wolbachia endosymbionts in the isopod Armadillidium nasatum. Theory predicts that the invasion of an XY/XX species by cytoplasmic sex ratio distorters is unlikely because it leads to fixation of

The size and body condition of cows can affect their reproductive efficiency. However, few studies reported genetic correlations between these traits in beef cattle. Thus, we estimated the genetic parameters and correlations between weight (MW), height (MH) and body condition score (BCS) of cows and reproductive traits (SC: scrotal circumference, AFC: age at first calving, GL: gestation length, DC: days to calving, and CI: calving interval) in Nelore animals. In addition, it has also obtained direct and correlated responses aiming at determining whether changes in cow size and body condition m

This review aims to summarize information about the genetic etiology of attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADHD), with particular reference to the contributions of our research group. We also discuss the genetic comorbidity estimated from genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP´s) between ADHD and major psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia (E), major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (BD) and autism spectrum disorders (ASD). A high genetic comorbidity was found between E and BD (46%), a moderate comorbidity between MDD and E, MDD and BD and MDD and ADHD (1
