OBJECTIVES: This study sought to examine associations between U.S. adolescents' perceived racism and discrimination (PRD) at school and current substance use.
METHODS: Data were drawn from the Adolescent Behaviors and Experiences Survey (ABES), a probability sample of U.S. high school students in 2021 (n = 7705). Multivariable regression models were conducted to examine associations of PRD with current (past 30-day) use of tobacco products, marijuana, alcohol, and prescription opioid misuse. Interaction effects of PRD and demographic factors were tested.
RESULTS: Among participants in the 20

Debates about Islamophobia have been blighted by the question of whether the prejudice can be defined as a form of racism or as hostility to religion (or a combination of the two). This paper sheds light on this debate by presenting the findings of a new nationally representative survey, focused on the UK, that contrasts perceptions of Muslims not only with perceptions of other ethnic and religious minorities but also with perceptions of Islam as a religious tradition. We find that prejudice against Muslims is higher than for any other group examined other than Travellers. We also find contras

Black, Indigenous, and other Youth of Color (BIPOC youth) experience racism from a young age. These experiences have both immediate and long-term impacts on their health and wellbeing. Systemic racism contributes to the inequitable distribution of health resources and other social determinants of health, creating barriers to accessing care. Substance use disorders and sexual/nonsexual risk behaviors have been linked to experiences of racism in BIPOC youth. The legacy of generational racial trauma can frame behaviors and attitudes in the present, undermining health and survival in this group. B

Pregnancy-related morbidity and mortality continue to disproportionately affect birthing people who identify as Black. The use of race-based risk factors in medicine exacerbates racial health inequities by insinuating a false conflation that fails to consider the underlying impact of racism. As we work toward health equity, we must remove race as a risk factor in our guidelines to address disparities due to racism. This includes the most recent US Preventive Services Taskforce, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine guidelines for aspirin p

Native Hawaiians, compared to other ethnic groups in Hawai'i, have significantly higher mortality rates and die at a younger average age from cardiovascular disease (CVD). This may be partially explained by elevated cardiovascular responses to racial stressors. Our study examined the degree to which blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) reactivity and recovery, and ratings of subjective distress to racial stressors, differ as a function of Native Hawaiian college students' levels of perceived racism. This study had three phases. Phase 1 involved the development of a blatant and subtle racial

Neighborhood context is a root cause of poor health and racial health disparities, including disparities in adverse birth outcomes. In a recent article, XXXX et al. leveraged a multi-generationally linked dataset of South Carolina birth certificates to construct life course trajectories of census tract-level neighborhood affluence and disadvantage (Am J Epidemiol 2025;XXX(XX):XXX-XXX). This innovative study contributes to the literature on neighborhood context and perinatal health by highlighting the relevance of a life course approach, interrogating the role of neighborhood affluence and disa

Gendered racism, rooted in the interlocking injustices of racism and sexism, is a contributor to poor mental health; its association with physical health outcomes, however, is not well understood. This study investigates whether gendered racism is associated with disease activity among Black women living with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Data are from the Vascular Aging, Inflammation, and Stress in African American Women's Health Research Study (VISTA; 2017-2023). Analyses were restricted to Black women with SLE (N = 201). Results revealed more frequent gendered racism experiences were

Racial discrimination has been linked to decreased psychological well-being and physical health. Most Asian Americans in the United States reported discrimination against Asians as a major problem and that inadequate attention is given to racial inequities affecting Asians living in the US. We described the association of racism-related stress and health outcomes among Asian American sexual minority men. We hypothesized that greater racism-related stress is associated with poor general and oral health, increased substance use, and unfavorable attitudes about PrEP. We conducted a secondary anal

BACKGROUND: Studies have found race-related stress psychologically and physiologically harms members of stigmatized racial groups. However, the stressor is racism, not race.
PURPOSE: This study examined the relationship between racism-related stress and psychological resilience in Black/African American nurses.
METHOD: This study used a cross-sectional, quantitative, correlational design with two instruments, an investigator-developed demographic questionnaire and a convenience sample.
FINDINGS: Participants perceived they have low psychological resilience in stressful situations. With raci

Recent literature suggests that vicarious racism is linked to adverse psychological health outcomes. However, our understanding of protective and risk factors in this context remains limited. This study examined the relationships among social media use integration, vicarious racism, individual differences (race-based rejection sensitivity and racial centrality), and psychological outcomes (anxiety and depression) in a sample of Black American adults. We hypothesized that higher social media use integration would predict greater anxiety and depression, with vicarious racism accounting for these

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Racism and religion are recognized as prevailing Social Determinants of Health (SDoH). To explore ways in which racism and religion looms in the daily lives of African Americans, we analyzed the experiences of African Americans born during the Jim Crow years and living in the Southern Appalachian Region of the United States.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Twenty-seven African Americans participated in this qualitative descriptive study that utilized criterion sampling, open-ended semistructured interviews, and content analysis to identify a typology of categories rela

Extant literature posits that humans experience two types of threat: physical threat and social threat. While describing pain as "physical" or "social" can be helpful for understanding pain origins (i.e., broken bone versus lost relationship), this dichotomy is largely artificial and not particularly helpful for understanding how the human brain experiences pain. One real world example of social exclusion and rejection that is threatening and likely to bring about significant stress is racism. Racism is a system of beliefs, practices, and policies that operates to disadvantage racialized minor

Background. Due to their intersecting racial identity and gender identity, Black women are characterized by stigmatizing race-based sexual stereotypes (RBSS) that may contribute to persistent, disproportionately high rates of adverse sexual and reproductive health outcomes. RBSS are sociocognitive structures that shape Black women's social behavior including their sexual scripts. Objective. The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of RBSS on the sexual decision making of young Black women (YBW). Methods. We conducted four focus groups with 26 YBW between the ages of 18 and 25, li

OBJECTIVE: Racial microaggressions are subtle, everyday expressions that communicate derogatory or exclusionary messages toward members of marginalised racial groups and are associated with adverse psychological outcomes. Evaluations of racial microaggressions may vary according to how individuals define and interpret racism. This study examined whether white fragility was associated with how white Australian psychology students evaluated vignettes reflecting the experiences of Aboriginal teenagers, focusing on the extent to which participants considered actor intentions, target experiences, a

OBJECTIVES: The adverse mental health effects of racism are well documented among Asian American communities, yet little is known about how internalized racism (IR) affects mental health among Asian American women, an underserved group. This study examines perceived stress and resilience as potential mechanism and moderator, respectively, in the relationship between IR and mental health outcomes (depression and anxiety).
DESIGN: Using a cross-sectional design, we included a sample of 349 Asian American adult women. Mediation analyses tested whether perceived stress mediated the association be

Black Americans face frequent exposure to racialized forms of stress directly through interpersonal discrimination experiences and indirectly through racialized social contexts that are shaped by structural factors (e.g., exposure to community violence). Research findings link chronic stress exposure to increased risk for internalizing psychopathology, yet internalizing outcomes among Black Americans are varied. Reinforcement sensitivity theory (RST) describes two systems, the behavioral inhibition system (BIS) and behavioral activation system (BAS), which are thought to shape individual diffe

Growing evidence highlights the adverse mental health consequences linked to the surge in COVID-19-related anti-Asian racism. However, the buffering role of social support in the context of the uniquely distressing experiences of COVID-19-related anti-Asian racism remains uncertain. Thus, our study aimed to examine the link between COVID-19-related anti-Asian racism and depressive symptoms among Asian American emerging adults and to assess whether social support might moderate this relationship. Using data from 139 Asian American participants (Mage = 23.04), we conducted moderation analyses us

PURPOSE: Most research on the structural determinants of substance use and mental health has centered around widely studied factors such as alcohol taxes, tobacco control policies, essential/precursor chemical regulations, neighborhood/city characteristics, and immigration policies. Other structural determinants exist, however, many of which are being identified in the emerging fields of structural stigma, structural racism, and structural sexism. This narrative review surveys the measures and designs used in substance use and mental health studies from these three fields.
