Noncontact Breathing Pattern Monitoring Using a 120 GHz Dual Radar System with Motion Interference Suppression.

Continuous monitoring of respiratory patterns is essential for disease diagnosis and daily health care. Contact medical devices enable reliable respiratory monitoring, but can cause discomfort and are limited in some settings. Radar offers a noncontact respiration measurement method for continuous, real-time, high-precision monitoring. However, it is difficult for a single radar to characterize the coordination of chest and abdominal movements during measured breathing. Moreover, motion interference during prolonged measurements can seriously affect accuracy. This study proposes a dual radar s

Orientia tsutsugamushi Nucleomodulin Ank13 Exploits the RaDAR Nuclear Import Pathway To Modulate Host Cell Transcription.

Orientia tsutsugamushi is the etiologic agent of scrub typhus, the deadliest of all diseases caused by obligate intracellular bacteria. Nucleomodulins, bacterial effectors that dysregulate eukaryotic transcription, are being increasingly recognized as key virulence factors. How they translocate into the nucleus and their functionally essential domains are poorly defined. We demonstrate that Ank13, an O. tsutsugamushi effector conserved among clinical isolates and expressed during infection, localizes to the nucleus in an importin β1-independent manner. Rather, Ank13 nucleotropism requires an i

Low Cost and Compact FMCW 24 GHz Radar Applications for Snowpack and Ice Thickness Measurements.

Monitoring the evolution of snow on the ground and lake ice-two of the most important components of the changing northern environment-is essential. In this paper, we describe a lightweight, compact and autonomous 24 GHz frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar system for freshwater ice thickness and snow mass (snow water equivalent, SWE) measurements. Although FMCW radars have a long-established history, the novelty of this research lies in that we take advantage the availability of a new generation of low cost and low power requirement units that facilitates the monitoring of snow and

Sleep stage classification by body movement index and respiratory interval indices using multiple radar sensors.

Disturbed sleep has become more common in recent years. To increase the quality of sleep, undergoing sleep observation has gained interest as an attempt to resolve possible problems. In this paper, we evaluate a non-restrictive and non-contact method for classifying real-time sleep stages and report on its potential applications. The proposed system measures body movements and respiratory signals of a sleeping person using a multiple 24-GHz microwave radar placed beneath the mattress. We determined a body-movement index to identify wake and sleep periods, and fluctuation indices of respiratory

Estimation of Walking Body Center of Mass Velocity by Means of Microwave Radars and Deep Learning.

OBJECTIVE: This study introduces an innovative framework combining microwave Doppler radar networks with deep learning to estimate three-dimensional body center of mass (BCoM) velocity. We evaluated the system's ability to derive clinical gait-quality indices, aiming for a privacy-preserving alternative to laboratory-based motion capture. METHODS: Sixty healthy adults performed treadmill walking at 2, 4, and 6 km/h, including a simulated hemiplegic gait. Three radars captured micro-Doppler spectrograms in anterior-posterior (AP), medio lateral (ML), and cranio-caudal (CC) directions. Recurren

Flying under the radar: vancomycin heteroresistance in Staphylococcus epidermidis peritonitis is associated with treatment failure.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global One Health problem and a growing threat to human and animal health. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests (AST) such as the broth-microdilution method (BMD) guide appropriate antimicrobial therapy but may fail to detect various forms of AMR, such as heteroresistance. We report vancomycin treatment failure in a Staphylococcus epidermidis peritoneal dialysis (PD) associated peritonitis case with vancomycin heteroresistance undetected by conventional AST and whole-genome sequencing. CASE SUMMARY: A patient with cloudy PD effluent presented to h

Under the Radar: Back Pain and Acute Kidney Injury as Harbingers of Type A Aortic Dissection.

Aortic dissection is a catastrophic vascular emergency with a high mortality rate if not diagnosed and managed in a timely manner. The classic presentation of thoracic aortic dissection includes the sudden onset of severe chest pain radiating to the back. Still, it may also present with atypical symptoms and signs of end-organ vascular compromise. We present a case of a 57-year-old female with a medical history of hypertension with poor medication adherence, major depressive disorder, chronic low back pain, and cocaine use disorder, who initially presented to the ED with worsening chronic low

Under the radar: Transcriptomic responses of bed bugs to an entomopathogen, environmental bacteria, and a human pathogen.

Bed bugs (Hemiptera: Cimicidae) are widely distributed, obligately blood-feeding insects, but they have never been linked to pathogen transmission in humans. Most other hematophagous insects that frequently bite humans transmit pathogens, and it is unclear why bed bugs do not. One hypothesis is that bed bugs have evolved a highly robust immune system because their mating system, traumatic insemination, exposes females to consistent wounding and bacterial infections. Although this has been proposed, very little is known about the bed bug immune system and how bed bugs respond to microbial chall

Calibration of Radar RCS Measurement Errors by Observing the Luneburg Lens Onboard the LEO Satellite.

Accurate radar RCS measurements are critical to the feature recognition of spatial targets. A calibration method for radar RCS measurement errors is proposed for the first time in the context of special target tracking by observing the Luneburg Lens onboard the LEO satellite. The Luneburg Lens has favorable RCS scattering properties for the radar microwave. Thus, the laboratory RCS measurements of the Luneburg Lens, with some fixed incident frequency and with different incident orientations for the radar microwave, will be implemented in order to build a database. The incident orientation for

Rectal and urinary dysfunction in the TROG 03.04 RADAR trial for locally advanced prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND: The RADAR trial determines whether adjuvant androgen suppression, bisphosphonates and radiation dose escalation for localised prostate cancer (PC) may improve oncologic outcomes. This study examines whether these measures increase rectal and urinary dysfunction and are secondary trial endpoints. METHODS: Using a 2×2 factorial trial design men with locally advanced PC were randomly allocated 6 months i.m. leuprorelin prior to radiotherapy either alone or followed by 12 months i.m. leuprorelin. These two groups received 18 months i.v. zoledronic acid (Z) commencing at randomisation

All-in-One Multispectral Stealth Device for X-Band Radar, Visible, and Near-Infrared Spectra.

Multispectral stealth is a critical technology in modern military and security applications. Conventional approaches generally address stealth in only one or two spectral bands-such as radar, visible light, or infrared (IR)-thereby limiting their effectiveness against advanced detection systems. In this study, we present, for the first time, an integrated and dynamically adaptive electrochromic system capable of achieving simultaneous stealth across the radar, near-infrared (NIR), and visible spectra. This single-device platform surpasses traditional independent or discrete methods in complexi

SDEF-BEV: spatial-aware dual-expert radar-camera fusion for robust BEV 3D object detection.

Bird's-eye view (BEV) radar-camera fusion is an economical and robust solution for 3D perception in autonomous driving. However, existing methods struggle with spatial misalignment between modalities and lack the ability to dynamically adjust the contribution of each modality across different spatial regions in complex scenarios. To address these issues, we propose SDEF-BEV, a novel spatial-aware dual-expert fusion network. At its core, SDEF-BEV adopts a parallel dual-path fusion architecture. The Spatial-Aware Dual-Expert Fusion (SDEF) module adaptively learns optimal feature fusion strategie

Dynamic Feature Fusion for Sparse Radar Detection: Motion-Centric BEV Learning with Adaptive Task Balancing.

This paper proposes a novel motion-aware framework to address key challenges in 4D millimeter-wave radar detection for autonomous driving. While existing methods struggle with sparse point clouds and dynamic object characterization, our approach introduces three key innovations: (1) A Bird's Eye View (BEV) fusion network incorporating velocity vector decomposition and dynamic gating mechanisms, effectively encoding motion patterns through independent XY-component convolutions; (2) a gradient-aware multi-task balancing scheme using learnable uncertainty parameters and dynamic weight normalizati

A Sliding Window-Based CNN-BiGRU Approach for Human Skeletal Pose Estimation Using mmWave Radar.

In this paper, we present a low-cost, low-power millimeter-wave (mmWave) skeletal joint localization system. High-quality point cloud data are generated using the self-developed BHYY_MMW6044 59-64 GHz mmWave radar device. A sliding window mechanism is introduced to extend the single-frame point cloud into multi-frame time-series data, enabling the full utilization of temporal information. This is combined with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for spatial feature extraction and a bidirectional gated recurrent unit (BiGRU) for temporal modeling. The proposed spatio-temporal information fusio

Integration of Sentinel-1A Radar and SMAP Radiometer for Soil Moisture Retrieval over Vegetated Areas.

NASA's Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) was originally designed to combine high-resolution active (radar) and coarse-resolution but highly sensitive passive (radiometer) L-band observations to achieve unprecedented spatial resolution and accuracy for soil moisture retrievals. However, shortly after SMAP was put into orbit, the radar component failed, and the high-resolution capability was lost. In this paper, the integration of an alternative radar sensor with the SMAP radiometer is proposed to enhance soil moisture retrieval capabilities over vegetated areas in the absence of the original
