Local salient location-aware anomaly mask synthesis for pulmonary disease anomaly detection and lesion localization in CT images.

Automated pulmonary anomaly detection using computed tomography (CT) examinations is important for the early warning of pulmonary diseases and can support clinical diagnosis and decision-making. Most training of existing pulmonary disease detection and lesion segmentation models requires expert annotations, which is time-consuming and labour-intensive, and struggles to generalize across atypical diseases. In contrast, unsupervised anomaly detection alleviates the demand for dataset annotation and is more generalizable than supervised methods in detecting rare pathologies. However, due to the l

Open-source domain adaptation to handle data shift for volumetric segmentation-use case kidney segmentation.

OBJECTIVES: Current development of kidney segmentation models has focused on using a single-phase CT, resulting in significant performance degradation caused by simple characteristic drift in testing datasets, e.g., difference in contrast phase appearance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We introduce a domain adaptation approach leveraging a latent space discriminator to train a robust model for segmenting kidneys from CT volume irrespective of the contrast dose and functional anomaly. We aim to handle three primary domain shifts between training and testing datasets-(i) contrast to non-contrast, (ii)

Subcutaneous edema segmentation on abdominal CT using multi-class labels and iterative annotation.

PURPOSE: Anasarca is a condition that results from organ dysfunctions, such as heart, kidney, or liver failure, characterized by the presence of edema throughout the body. The quantification of accumulated edema may have potential clinical benefits. This work focuses on accurately estimating the amount of edema non-invasively using abdominal CT scans, with minimal false positives. However, edema segmentation is challenging due to the complex appearance of edema and the lack of manually annotated volumes. METHODS: We propose a weakly supervised approach for edema segmentation using initial ede

Calcified Adrenal Lesions: Pattern Recognition Approach on Computed Tomography With Pathologic Correlation.

Incidental adrenal lesions are found in 2% to 10% of the population. The presence and pattern of calcifications, in conjunction with other clinical and imaging features, such as soft tissue attenuation, enhancement, and laterality, can aid in narrowing a differential diagnosis, thereby preventing unnecessary biopsies and avoiding delays in management. Calcified adrenal lesions can be categorized under the clinical and laboratory headings of normal adrenal function, hyperfunctioning adrenal tissue, and adrenal insufficiency. In this review, we provide an algorithmic approach to assessing calcif

Segmentation of abdominal organs in computed tomography using a generalized statistical shape model.

Segmentation of anatomical structures in computed tomography images remains an important stage in computer-aided diagnostics and therapy. Due to the complexity of anatomical structures in the abdominal cavity, the occurrence of anatomical variants and pathological changes of organs in computed tomography images, segmentation is still treated as a current research problem. The paper presents the segmentation method based on the generalized statistical shape model. The method was tested in the application to segmentation based on 40 cases of computed tomography with contrast: 20 cases were inclu

Measuring rib cortical bone thickness and cross section from CT.

This study assesses the ability to measure local cortical bone thickness, and to obtain mechanically relevant properties of rib cross-sections from clinical-resolution computed tomography (CT) scans of human ribs. The study utilized thirty-four sections of ribs published by Perz et al. (2015) in three modalities: standard clinical CT (clinCT), high-resolution clinical CT (HRclinCT), and microCT (µCT). Clinical-resolution images were processed using a Cortical Bone Mapping (CBM) algorithm applied to cross-cortex signals resampled perpendicularly to an initial smooth periosteal border. Geometric

Imaging and Screening for Colorectal Cancer with CT Colonography.

Despite being readily preventable, colorectal cancer ranks second behind only lung cancer in overall mortality. However, this situation could be reversed if screening tests that effectively detect advanced adenomas and early cancers were broadly applied. Computed tomographic colonography (CTC) reflects an ideal balance of minimal invasiveness with high-level performance, assuming all facets of the examination are appropriately addressed. Unfortunately, this promising screening test remains grossly underused. This article details the technical and interpretive approaches used by one successful

CBCT-based volume of simulated root resorption - influence of FOV and voxel size.

AIM: To examine the influence of the field of view (FOV) and voxel size on the measurement of the volume of simulated internal root resorption (IRR) lesions through cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODOLOGY: Eleven single-rooted teeth with IRR simulated by acid demineralization were studied. CBCT images were acquired using large FOV (voxel sizes of 0.200, 0.250 and 0.300 mm) and limited FOV (voxel sizes of 0.076, 0.100 and 0.200 mm). The IRR volumes were calculated using the Dolphin(®) software. Volumetric measurements were validated using IRR silicone putty casts. The analysis of var

Snakules: a model-based active contour algorithm for the annotation of spicules on mammography.

We have developed a novel, model-based active contour algorithm, termed "snakules", for the annotation of spicules on mammography. At each suspect spiculated mass location that has been identified by either a radiologist or a computer-aided detection (CADe) algorithm, we deploy snakules that are converging open-ended active contours also known as snakes. The set of convergent snakules have the ability to deform, grow and adapt to the true spicules in the image, by an attractive process of curve evolution and motion that optimizes the local matching energy. Starting from a natural set of automa

VLD-Net: Localization and Detection of the Vertebrae From X-Ray Images by Reinforcement Learning With Adaptive Exploration Mechanism and Spine Anatomy Information.

Accurate and efficient vertebrae localization and detection in X-ray images are essential for diagnosing and treating spinal diseases. However, most existing methods struggle with the complexity of spine X-ray images, yielding inaccurate results due to insufficient utilization of spinal anatomy information and neglect of individual vertebra characteristics. In this paper, we propose an innovative Vertebrae Localization and Detection Network (VLD-Net) to accurately assist physicians in diagnosing spine-related diseases from X-ray images. Our VLD-Net, for the first time, defines vertebrae locali

3D segmentation of nasopharyngeal carcinoma from CT images using cascade deep learning.

In the paper, we propose a new deep learning-based method for segmenting nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in the nasopharynx from three orthogonal CT images. The proposed method introduces a cascade strategy composed of two-phase manners. In CT images, there are organs, called non-target organs, which NPC never invades. Therefore, the first phase is to detect and eliminate non-target organ regions from the CT images. In the second phase, NPC is extracted from the remained regions in the CT images. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are applied to detect non-target organs and NPCs. The proposed
