First report of a funnel-web spider envenoming syndrome in Brisbane.

The Australian funnel-web spider, arguably the most venomous spider in the world, is distributed along the Australian eastern seaboard, typically preferring moist, cool, sheltered habitats such as rainforests. Prior surveys around Brisbane have only ever demonstrated funnel-web spiders in the outskirts of the city contiguous with bushland or native rainforest. We report the first funnel-web spider envenoming syndrome presumed from a spider resident to inner-city Brisbane. Emergency departments in the greater Brisbane area should be prepared for this clinical scenario, and stocks of Commonwealt

Provenance and geographic spread of St. Louis encephalitis virus.

St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) is the prototypic mosquito-borne flavivirus in the Americas. Birds are its primary vertebrate hosts, but amplification in certain mammals has also been suggested. The place and time of SLEV emergence remain unknown. In an ecological investigation in a tropical rainforest in Palenque National Park, Mexico, we discovered an ancestral variant of SLEV in Culex nigripalpus mosquitoes. Those SLEV-Palenque strains form a highly distinct phylogenetic clade within the SLEV species. Cell culture studies of SLEV-Palenque versus epidemic SLEV (MSI-7) revealed no growth

Update on the distribution of Mansonella perstans in the southern part of Cameroon: influence of ecological factors and mass drug administration with ivermectin.

BACKGROUND: Mansonellosis remains one of the most neglected of tropical diseases and its current distribution in the entire forest block of southern Cameroon is unknown. In order to address this issue, we have surveyed the distribution of Mansonella perstans in different bioecological zones and in addition, elucidated the influence of multiple rounds of ivermectin (IVM) based mass drug administration (MDA). METHODS: A mixed design was used. Between 2000 and 2014, both cross-sectional and longitudinal surveys were carried out in 137 communities selected from 12 health districts belonging to fi

The demographic and adaptive history of central African hunter-gatherers and farmers.

Central Africa, a forested region that supports an exceptionally high biodiversity, hosts the world's largest group of hunter-gatherers, who live in close proximity with groups that have adopted agriculture over the past 5000 years. Our understanding of the prehistory of these populations has been dramatically hampered by the almost total absence of fossil remains in this region, a limitation that has recently been circumvented by population genomics approaches. Different studies have estimated that ancestors of rainforest hunter-gatherers and Bantu-speaking farmers separated more than 60 000

First Report of Oculocutaneous Albinism Type I Among Baka Pygmies From Cameroon.

Oculocutaneous albinism type 1 (OCA1) caused by pathogenic variants of the TYR gene is an autosomal recessive disorder of pigmentation characterized by reduced biosynthesis of melanin pigment in skin, hair, and eyes. We had the opportunity to examine five East Cameroon Baka rainforest hunter-gatherers (historically called "Pygmies") with albinism and belonging to three different families. Screening of known albinism genes revealed a homozygous missense variant in the TYR gene, NM_000372.5: c.1109T>C; p.Met370Thr. In addition, one patient was also hemizygous for a variant in GPR143, the gene in

Uncovering a tragic flaw in revolutionary health policies: From health and communicative inequities to communicative justice in health.

This article analyzes a contradiction facing efforts by left-leaning governments in Latin America to transform health into a fundamental social right. Policies and practices that confront health inequities generally fail to address health/communicative inequities, hierarchical distributions of rights to shape what counts as legitimate knowledge of health. This ethnographic analysis focuses on an epidemic of a mysterious disease - identified clinically as bat-transmitted rabies - in the Delta Amacuro rainforest of Venezuela in 2007-2008, tracing how parents who lost 1-3 children faced acute hea

Ethno-etiology meets virology: land leeches (family: Haemadipsidae) as potential disease vectors.

OBJECTIVES: Hematophagous terrestrial leeches are common in rainforest habitats and widely regarded as pests. Despite limited research, circumstantial evidence raises the possibility that, beyond being an annoyance, terrestrial leeches could potentially transmit diseases. METHODS: We explored this possibility using multiple approaches. First, we reviewed published literature to synthesize knowledge related to disease transmission by leeches. Second, we collected terrestrial leeches (genus Haemadipsa) from human-occupied rainforests in Peninsular Malaysia and applied metagenomic methods for vi

Hidden decay of live trees in a tropical rain forest.

The trunks of forest trees store massive amounts of carbon, but fungi actively and invisibly decay wood inside even seemingly healthy trees. Wood-decay fungi are responsible for the loss of stored carbon in living trees, and they make trees susceptible to snapping and uprooting in storms. We used sonic tomography to measure the prevalence and severity of decay in 1744 live trees (≥20 cm diameter) of 171 species on the 50-ha Forest Dynamics Plot on Barro Colorado Island, Panama. A median of <2% of the cross-sectional trunk area showed decay, but 15% of trees had >20% decay. Twenty percent of th

Cultivation of a Wild Strain of Wood Ear Auricularia cornea from Brazil.

Auricularia cornea has become one of the most important cultivated mushrooms worldwide. Although not remarkably flavorful, Auricularia species are very versatile and rehydrate easily after drying, adding a unique and pleasing texture to the dishes. In this study, we collected, identified, and domesticated a wild strain of A. cornea from the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest. The wild strain was evaluated for mycelial growth at different temperatures and substrates, biological efficiency, and nutritional composition. The temperature that best favored the A. cornea mycelium growth was 30 °C, and the

Island and Riverine populations of Alouatta belzebul from the Brazilian Amazon parasitized by Pediculus mjobergi.

Mammalian lice are obligate hematophagous ectoparasites that remain on the host throughout the life cycle. This study showed an endangered wild howler species (Alouatta belzebul) parasitized by Pediculus mjobergi. Twenty-seven primates were rescued during wildlife rescue activities in the process of vegetation suppression at the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Power Plant (UHE), located on the lower Xingu River, in the Brazilian Amazon basin. Among the 27 primates examined from two vegetal formations (alluvial rainforest and liana-infested forest) areas, 13 (48.15%) were parasitized by lice with all

Genomic history of human monkey pox infections in the Central African Republic between 2001 and 2018.

Monkeypox is an emerging infectious disease, which has a clinical presentation similar to smallpox. In the two past decades, Central Africa has seen an increase in the frequency of cases, with many monkeypox virus (MPXV) isolates detected in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Central African Republic (CAR). To date, no complete MPXV viral genome has been published from the human cases identified in the CAR. The objective of this study was to sequence the full genome of 10 MPXV isolates collected during the CAR epidemics between 2001 and 2018 in order to determine their phylogenetic

Ecology, biology and distribution of spotted-fever tick vectors in Brazil.

Spotted-fever-caused Rickettsia rickettsii infection is in Brazil the major tick-borne zoonotic disease. Recently, a second and milder human rickettsiosis caused by an agent genetically related to R. parkeri was discovered in the country (Atlantic rainforest strain). Both diseases clearly have an ecological background linked to a few tick species and their environment. Capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) and Amblyomma cajennense ticks in urban and rural areas close to water sources are the main and long-known epidemiological feature behind R. rickettsii-caused spotted-fever. Unfortunately, t

Amblyomma ovale.

Amblyomma ovale is a Neotropical tick widely distributed from southern Mexico to northern Argentina. It has been confirmed in most American countries, except for Canada, the United States, Chile, Uruguay, and the Caribbean islands, excluding Trinidad and Tobago. Sporadic records in these later countries likely represent accidental introductions. This three-host tick occurs primarily in ecosystems with high humidity, such as the Amazon and Atlantic rainforest. Adults commonly parasitize wild large mammals, dogs, and may bite humans. Immature stages feed mainly on small mammals (rodents, marsupi

Ticks and tick-borne rickettsiae from dogs in El Salvador, with report of the human pathogen Rickettsia parkeri.

Twelve tick species have been reported in El Salvador; however, information regarding ticks infesting domestic dogs is lacking, and pathogenic tick-borne Rickettsia species have never been reported in El Salvador. This work evaluated ticks infesting 230 dogs from ten municipalities in El Salvador from July 2019 to August 2020. A total of 1,264 ticks were collected and identified into five species: Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (s.l.), Rhipicephalus microplus, Amblyomma mixtum, Amblyomma ovale, and Amblyoma cf. parvum. The tick R. sanguineus s.l. was the most frequent species in all local

Unique Strain of Rickettsia parkeri Associated with the Hard Tick Dermacentor parumapertus Neumann in the Western United States.

In 1953, investigators at the Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Hamilton, MT, described the isolation of a spotted fever group Rickettsia (SFGR) species from Dermacentor parumapertus ticks collected from black-tailed jackrabbits (Lepus californicus) in northern Nevada. Several decades later, investigators characterized this SFGR (designated the parumapertus agent) by using mouse serotyping methods and determined that it represented a distinct rickettsial serotype closely related to Rickettsia parkeri; nonetheless, the parumapertus agent was not further characterized or studied. To our knowledge,

Macroevolutionary dynamics and predictors of tropical rain forest plant diversity.

Tropical rain forest is the most diverse terrestrial biome, yet the drivers of its diversification across space and time remain poorly understood. Although heterogeneous diversification rates, including both ancient and recent radiations, have been reported, these dynamics have rarely been examined within a single lineage across deep evolutionary timescales. Here, we reconstruct a dated phylogenomic tree of the pantropical plant family Annonaceae, sampling 2045 species (∼82% of its diversity) and spanning ∼100 million years of evolutionary history. Diversification dynamics vary markedly across
