Computerized reaction time battery versus a traditional neuropsychological battery: detecting HIV-related impairments.

In recent years, interest in the use of computerized neuropsychological (NP) assessment measures has increased. However, there are limited data regarding how performance on these measures relates to performance on more traditional, clinical instruments. In the present study, 82 HIV+ men, who were all believed on clinical grounds to have neurobehavioral impairment, completed a traditional NP battery (TNB) and the California Computerized Assessment Package (CalCAP, a collection of computerized reaction time tests). Summary scores based on a TNB, as well as those based on the CalCAP, demonstrated

Effects of a startling acoustic stimulus on reaction time in different parkinsonian syndromes.

BACKGROUND: The functional assessment of the startle circuit is usually done by analyzing the acoustic startle response (ASR). However, a startling acoustic stimulus (SAS) also induces changes in the excitability of neural structures that can be demonstrated by studying the SAS-induced change in the behavior of certain neurophysiologic responses. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects induced by an SAS on voluntary reaction time in patients with parkinsonian syndromes (StartReact effect) and to compare the results with those obtained in a group of age-matched healthy volunteers. METHODS: Twelve p

Time resolved absorption study of the reaction of hydroxyurea with sickle cell hemoglobin.

Hydroxyurea has been mixed with hemoglobin S and the reaction was studied using electronic absorption spectroscopy as a function of time and wavelength. The rate of conversion of oxyhemoglobin S to other species was determined and the nature of the reaction products was studied. We also report the formation of methemoglobin (and other reaction products) when deoxyhemoglobin S is combined with hydroxyurea. The probable increase in the formation of methemoglobin, and other potential reaction products such as nitric oxide-hemoglobin, in patients with sickle cell anemia who are taking hydroxyurea

Slowed reaction time during a continuous performance test in children with Tourette's syndrome.

The phenomonology of Tourette's syndrome (TS) not only includes tics but also apparent deficits in attention. These attentional deficits in TS likely involve anomalies in frontal-striatal circuits. In this study, performance of 22 boys with TS and 22 age-matched boys without TS was compared on a continuous performance test (CPT) of attention. TS children demonstrated a normal capacity for discriminating targets from nontargets during the task, but showed significantly slower reaction times than controls. Severity of complex vocal tics was predictive of reaction time performance. Possible expla

Continuous reaction time after single dose, long-term oral and epidural opioid administration.

Auditory continuous reaction time was studied in three treatment groups. Twenty opioid naive patients received intramuscular morphine 0.15 mg kg-1 bodyweight for premedication. Thirty-one cancer patients were treated with oral opioids, 180 mg morphine per 24 h (median). Twenty-two cancer patients were treated with epidural morphine, 79 mg morphine per 24 h (median). The treatment groups were compared to a control group of 44 healthy persons taking no analgesics. The reaction time was measured using 152 auditory signals and summarized as 10%, 50% and 90% percentiles. Analysing reaction time dis

Event-related potentials, reaction time, and cognitive state in patients with Parkinson's disease.

ERPs, RT, and cognitive state in 53 patients with PD were studied. The peak latency of P300 and the RT in PD patients were significantly prolonged in the advanced stage of illness. The cognitive state in PD patients was characterized by impairment of attention, recent memory, and constructional ability in categories of the Folstein Mini-Mental State Examination. The significant association between neurophysiological and neuropsychological measurements suggests that these measurements reflect a disrupted aspect of cognitive function in PD patients.

Simple reaction-time responses to mechanical and electrical stimuli in human masseter muscle.

The latencies of the simple reaction-time responses for opening and closing of the jaws in response to taps and pushes on teeth and lip shocks were measured in human adults. The reaction times were scored from both the integrated electromyographic (EMG) signal in individual trials, and from the cumulative sum (CUSUM) of the averaged EMG response to 50 stimuli. The mean reaction times for both closing and opening were about 80-90 ms for taps and electrical lip shocks, and about 140 ms for push, measured from the CUSUMs. The reaction times in individual trials were difficult to measure from the

Influence of the beta-blocking atenolol and other medications on visual reaction time.

Visual reaction time as a measure of vigilance and of the psychophysiological condition of subjects, was determined after combined physical and mental stress to examine the influence of beta blockade. Using the technique of electro-oculography, 40 subjects aged 25.7 +/- 6 years, with a mean blood pressure of 126/79 torr, were studied in a double-blind crossover design after application of placebo or 50 mg atenolol for 3 d. Visual reaction time was defined as the time between display of a peripheral light signal and the start of the eye movement that shifts the direction of gaze from the refere

Simple reaction time: evidence for focal impairment from lesions of the right hemisphere.

Simple reaction time is significantly increased in patients with unilateral lesions of either cerebral hemisphere responding with the hand ipsilateral to the lesion, but the effect is much greater when the lesion is in the non-dominant hemisphere. This difference cannot be attributed to asymmetries in the size or type of lesion. It applies over the complete distribution of reaction times as well as to the means, and is not diminished by practice. Neither the classical conduction model of reaction time nor the mass-action hypothesis proposed by De Renzi and Faglioni (1965) can account for the f

Persistent Choice reaction-time slowing in collegiate athletes with a history of concussion.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether collegiate athletes with a history of concussion exhibit persistent reaction-time deficits after accounting for SCAT6-based memory/concentration measures and computerized neurocognitive domain scores. METHODS: 547 NCAA Division I athletes completed computerized neurocognitive testing, SCAT6-based symptom and cognitive assessments, and balance evaluations. Propensity-score matching produced 138 athletes with concussion history matched to 138 controls. Four RT outcomes were analyzed: Choice RT, Simple RT, Stroop RT, and Shifting-Attention RT. Drop-on-fixed-target reaction initiation approach for serial and time-resolved crystallography.

We describe the design and implementation of a drop-on-fixed-target method for time-resolved serial crystallography at both synchrotron and XFEL facilities. A piezoelectric droplet dispensing pipette is employed for addition of picolitre volume aqueous droplets (∼40-90 pl; ∼40-55 µm diameter sphere), containing (co-)substrate(s) or ligand(s), onto enzyme microcrystals previously loaded into the trapezoidal wells of an etched crystalline silicon fixed-target chip containing 25 600 wells in a high-density, square grid with 125 µm centre-to-centre well spacing. Phase of transcranial alternating current stimulation modulates reaction time in working memory tasks.

BACKGROUND: Theta-frequency transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) over prefrontal cortex has been proposed to modulate working memory (WM), yet behavioral effects are often inconsistent. One potential source of variability is the tACS phase during stimulus presentation. OBJECTIVE: We tested whether behavioral performance during WM depends on the phase of prefrontal theta-tACS. METHODS: Twenty participants completed two sessions of prefrontal 4 Hz tACS in a within-subject design, receiving active and sham stimulation in separate sessions. Participants performed a visuospatial ch

Pre-Participation Reaction Time and Concussion Risk among Middle School Female Soccer Players.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether slower reaction time (RT) was associated with higher concussion odds among middle school female soccer players. STUDY DESIGN: We performed a retrospective cohort study, analyzing pre-participation computerized neurocognitive data (Immediate Postconcussion and Cognitive Testing) for 10-14-year-old female soccer players. We compared composite RT scores between those who did/did not sustain a concussion during the following year using Welch's t-test. We used binary logistic regression to determine the association between RT and subsequent concussion, adjusting f

Facial emotion recognition in temporal lobe epilepsy: Behavioral performance, reaction time and alexithymia.

OBJECTIVE: Facial emotion recognition (FER) deficits are well documented in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), but most studies have focused on recognition accuracy, with limited attention to reaction time (RT) and its relationship with alexithymia. This study aimed to compare FER accuracy, RT, and alexithymia levels between patients with TLE and healthy controls (HCs) and to examine associations between FER performance and alexithymia. METHODS: Twenty-two patients with unilateral TLE and 30 age-, sex-, and education-matched HCs were included. FER accuracy and RTs were assessed using a standardize

Long-Term Health Consequences of SARS-CoV-2: Reaction Time and Brain Fog.

Background/Objectives: Beyond respiratory problems, COVID-19 can cause a variety of symptoms, such as neurological disorders caused by biological and psychological factors. Brain fog (BF), a post-illness cognitive impairment that many patients report, can be evaluated with reaction time (RT) testing. Response latency is measured by RT, which can be either simple (sRT) or complex (cRT). This study focuses on how COVID-19 affects cognitive function, with particular attention on RT changes, BF prevalence, and implications for daily life. Methods: The study included 599 participants from Bosnia an

Time-Sequential Monitoring of the Early Mesothelial Reaction in the Pleura after Cryoinjury.

(1) Background: An early mesothelial reaction of the pleura, leading to fibrosis, has been reported in animals after chemical or heavy metal exposure. However, the visual monitoring of early time-sequential mesothelial reaction-associated cryoinjury has not been fully investigated. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate and visualize the early mesothelial reactions seen following cryoinjury using rabbit pleura. (2) Methods: We monitored the early mesothelial reaction in rabbit pleurae after cryoinjury using optical coherence tomography (OCT), in real-time, which was then compared with patholo

Examining reaction time variability on the stop-signal task in the ABCD study.

OBJECTIVE: Reaction time variability (RTV) has been estimated using Gaussian, ex-Gaussian, and diffusion model (DM) indices. Rarely have studies examined interrelationships among these performance indices in childhood, and the use of reaction time (RT) computational models has been slow to take hold in the developmental psychopathology literature. Here, we extend prior work in adults by examining the interrelationships among different model parameters in the ABCD sample and demonstrate how computational models of RT can clarify mechanisms of time-on-task effects and sex differences in RTs. Impaired Frontal Midline Theta During Periods of High Reaction Time Variability in Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Impairment in cognitive control is one of the most significant cognitive deficits in schizophrenia. Although it has generally been associated with altered engagement of lateral and medial prefrontal cortices, how attention fluctuations affect this engagement is still not known. In this context, we explored sustained (or proactive) and transient (or reactive) control engagement by investigating frontal theta-band oscillations during periods of low- and high-performance instability, assumed to represent intraindividual attentional fluctuations. METHODS: A total of 25 patients with s

Examination of Reaction Time Deficits Following Concussion: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Reaction time (RT) deficits are reported following concussion, but it is unknown when these deficits normalize to pre-injury status. It is also unclear how factors such as RT measurement technique and participant characteristics influence post-concussion RT. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to (1) characterize acute post-concussion (0-3 days) RT impairments, (2) examine RT recovery over time, and (3) explore moderating factors related to acute RT impairment following concussion. METHODS: Database searches (PubMed, CINAHL, EBSCOhost) were cond

Examining implicit procedural learning in tetraplegia using an oculomotor serial reaction time task.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Clinical observations indicate that implicit procedural learning, a central component of physical and psychosocial rehabilitation, is impeded following spinal cord injury. In accordance, previous research has revealed a specific deficit in implicit sequence learning among individuals with paraplegia using a standard, manual version of the serial reaction time task. To extend these findings and shed light on the underlying sources of potential spinal cord injury-related deficits in sequence learning, we used an ocular activated serial reaction time task to compare sequ
