Paediatric facial paralysis: An overview and insights into management.

The aim of this article is to provide an overview on paediatric facial paralysis, looking into aetiology, epidemiology, assessment and investigation and subsequent treatment options available. Facial paralysis describes the inability to activate the muscles of fascial expression. Overall, it affects 2.7 per 100 000 children under 10 years old and 10.1 per 100 000 children over 10 years old each year. There are many causes of facial paralysis and the outcomes and necessary treatments vary depending on the cause. The mainstays of medical management are corticosteroids and facial therapy; however

Utilization of Blood Flow Restriction Therapy with a Former Triathlete After Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION AND PURPOSE: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a common condition that limits function and reduces quality of life. Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a surgical procedure that replaces the joint surfaces to address anatomical changes due to knee OA. While TKA improves symptoms and function, postoperative impairments are common, including reduced quadriceps strength. Blood flow restriction (BFR) may be a viable option for patients following TKA, as it can improve strength with a minimal amount of joint loading compared to traditional strength training. The purpose of this case report is t

[Exertion-related disorders in body temperature regulation in 8 participants in the Dam-to-Dam run 1993].

In eight recreational runners (seven men and one woman, aged 16 to 50 years) participating in a 16 kilometer run, disturbances in thermoregulation were diagnosed. Six experienced sudden collapse without any prodromal signs, two were exhausted and had muscle spasms. Heat exhaustion was diagnosed in four runners, exertion-related hyperthermia in three and exertion-related heat stroke in one. As a complication the latter patient developed rhabdomyolysis with low grade intravascular coagulation and acute renal insufficiency. The most important therapy consists of cooling the patient, the most impo

The Use of Radiosynovectomy Using Yttrium-90 as an Adjunct to Mechanical Synovectomy for Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis: How Effective Is This?

Introduction Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) or giant cell tumour of the tendon sheath (GCTT) is a rare disorder involving the proliferation of the synovium in any joint; however, the knee, hip, and ankle joints are most commonly targeted. The aim of this study is to follow the short-term outcomes of the treatment of patients with PVNS of the knee managed by intra-articular injection of yttrium-90 or radiosynovectomy (RS) alone and a combination of RS and arthroscopic/open debulking synovectomy. Methods A cohort of eight knees from six patients was included in this study, including thr

[Value and characteristics of physical medicine and health resort medicine in advanced age].

Physical medicine and spa medicine both have the impetus of rehabilitation in common. In addition, they share the therapeutical orientation toward the performance capacity of organs and functional systems, as well as to activities of daily living, the consideration of chronobiological rules of training and adaptation, and an acknowledging of the fact that diseases and, therefore, the basics of rehabilitation are constantly changing. With increasing age the relation of therapy to function resp. rehabilitation becomes increasingly important. Gerontorehabilitation is distinguished from general re

Effectiveness of Inclusion of Dry Needling in a Multimodal Therapy Program for Patellofemoral Pain: A Randomized Parallel-Group Trial.

Study Design Randomized controlled trial. Background Evidence suggests that multimodal interventions that include exercise therapy may be effective for patellofemoral pain (PFP); however, no study has investigated the effects of trigger point (TrP) dry needling (DN) in people with PFP. Objectives To compare the effects of adding TrP DN to a manual therapy and exercise program on pain, function, and disability in individuals with PFP. Methods Individuals with PFP (n = 60) recruited from a public hospital in Valencia, Spain were randomly allocated to manual therapy and exercises (n = 30) or manu

Horseback riding therapy for a deafblind individual enabled by a haptic interface.

We present a haptic interface to help deafblind people to practice horseback riding as a recreational and therapeutic activity. Horseback riding is a form of therapy which can improve self-esteem and sensation of independence. It has been shown to benefit people with various medical conditions-including autism. However, in the case of deafblind riders, an interpreter must stand by at all times to communicate with the rider by touch. We developed a simple interface that enables deafblind people to enjoy horseback riding while the instructor is remotely providing cues, which improves their indep

Beyond "just" fun: The role of exergames in advancing health promotion and disease prevention.

Applying innovations in digital health technologies, such as exergames, has been recommended by official bodies like the World Health Organization for health promotion and disease prevention across various populations and age groups. Given a key advantage of interactive and gamified digital health technologies is promoting user engagement, a substantial proportion of studies have implemented recreational exergames - games primarily designed to make specific activities more fun and entertaining. In this article, we aim to move beyond the benefits of "just" providing a more engaging environment

The Dermatology of Recreational Scuba Diving: A Narrative Review.

Scuba diving is a popular watersport in the United States, with over 9 million certified divers. This activity uses specialized equipment that enables swimmers to explore deeper into the ocean for a more extended period than free diving. This popularity has led to the development of diving medicine, a multidisciplinary field that includes dermatologic management. An extensive literature review was conducted on PubMed and Google Scholar, using key search terms related to diving and dermatology to compile relevant peer-reviewed articles. This review examines the dermatological impacts of recreat

The influence of directional preference on lateral patellar dislocation: a case report.

BACKGROUND: There is little consensus on the conservative management of lateral patellar dislocations (LPD). Mechanical diagnosis and therapy (MDT) is an established classification system in the spinal and extremity population. This case report describes the use of MDT in the management and classification of a patient with LPD. CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient was a 20-year-old female with a 3-month history of left knee pain precipitated by a lateral patellar dislocation. The patient described pain and a feeling of instability with standing and walking and limitations in work and recreational ac

Comparison of Single and Combined Treatment with Exercise Therapy and Collagen Supplementation on Early Knee Arthritis among Athletes-A Quasi-Randomized Trial.

Athletic injuries are commonly implicated in the development of early osteoarthritic (EOA) changes in the knee. These changes have a significant impact on athletic performance, and therefore the early detection of EOA is paramount. The objective of the study is to assess the impact of different interventions on individuals with EOA, particularly focusing on recreational athletes. The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of three treatment groups in improving various aspects related to knee EOA, including pain, range of motion, strength, and function. A study was undertaken with 48 recreati

Debunking the myth of 'Blue Mondays': No evidence of affect drop after taking clinical MDMA.

BACKGROUND: Incorporating 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) as an adjunct to psychotherapy has shown promise in recent years for treating various mental health conditions, particularly those involving trauma. However, concerns about declines in mood and cognition during the days following dosing, also known as 'Blue Mondays', have been raised as limitations to its clinical use. Although these changes have been well-documented among recreational users, there are critical confounds to these reports that limit generalizability to clinically administered MDMA. AIMS: Here, we aimed to evalu

Severe Sea Lion Bites in Urban Cold-Water Swimmers.

BACKGROUND: A series of sea lion bites in open-water swimmers recently gained the attention of the national and international media. Pinniped (the clade including seals and sea lions) bites historically have been in people who hunt or handle marine mammals. As populations of humans and pinnipeds continue to grow, interactions with animals by those participating in recreational activities are likely to become more frequent. CASE REPORTS: In December of 2017 and January of 2018, four sea lion (Zalophus californianus) bites in humans occurred at a popular open-water recreational swimming area in

Association between host species choice and morphological characters of main sensory structures of Culicoides in the Palaeartic region.

OBJECTIVES: The primary purpose of this randomized controlled trial (RCT) was to evaluate the efficacy of a guided internet-based recovery training for employees who suffer from both work-related strain and sleep problems (GET.ON Recovery). The recovery training consisted of six lessons, employing well-established methods from cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) such as sleep restriction, stimulus control, and hygiene interventions as well as techniques targeted at reducing rumination and promoting recreational activities. METHODS: In a two-arm RCT (N=128), the effects of GET.ON

Independent sailing with high tetraplegia using sip and puff controls: integration into a community sailing center.

BACKGROUND: We are continually rediscovering how adapted recreational activity complements the rehabilitation process, enriches patients' lives and positively impacts outcome measures. Although sports for people with spinal cord injuries (SCI) has achieved spectacular visibility, participation by high cervical injuries is often restricted due to poor accessibility, safety concerns, lack of adaptability, and high costs of technology. METHODS: We endeavor to demonstrate the mechanisms, adaptability, accessibility, and benefits the sport of sailing creates in the rehabilitative process. Our sail

A survey on self-assessed well-being in a cohort of chronic locked-in syndrome patients: happy majority, miserable minority.

Objectives Locked-in syndrome (LIS) consists of anarthria and quadriplegia while consciousness is preserved. Classically, vertical eye movements or blinking allow coded communication. Given appropriate medical care, patients can survive for decades. We studied the self-reported quality of life in chronic LIS patients. Design 168 LIS members of the French Association for LIS were invited to answer a questionnaire on medical history, current status and end-of-life issues. They self-assessed their global subjective well-being with the Anamnestic Comparative Self-Assessment (ACSA) scale, whose +5

Anesthesia and medical cannabis: an integrated approach.

Cannabis use, both medical and recreational, is increasing and poses a growing challenge for anesthesiologists, given the scarcity of specific clinical data. The main phytocannabinoids, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), interact with CB1 and CB2 receptors, affecting cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, and immune systems, as well as the metabolism of several anesthetic drugs. Chronic or high-dose use can alter anesthetic requirements, increase risk of perioperative complications, and modify postoperative pain responses, often leading to greater opioid consumption. ASRA

Thromboembolic complications of recreational nitrous oxide (ab)use: a systematic review.

The recreatinal use of nitrous oxide has become more common in recent years, especially in adolescents and young adults. It has been mainly associated with medical conditions like megaloblastic anemia and (myelo)neuropathy. We report on the thromboembolic complications, a less known side effect, associated with recreational inhalation of nitrous oxide. An extensive literature search was performed for publications reporting on the thromboembolic complications associated with recreational nitrous oxide abuse.
