DeepIR-Pred: identification of insulin receptors using metaheuristic optimization of biologically informed multi-view features with deep recurrent learning.

The insulin receptor (IR) proteins play a central role in cellular growth and metabolic regulation. Disruption of IRs is linked to several fatal neurodegenerative and cancer-like diseases. Wet-lab experiments are time-consuming, costly, and resource-intensive. Therefore, accurately predicting IR proteins using computational methods is critical for understanding the IR-associated biological mechanism and advancing therapeutic research. In this work, we propose a biologically informed deep learning method, DeepIR-Pred, which is the first rigorous model to accurately identify IR proteins. To ensu

Evaluation of Cough Sound Segmentation Algorithms in the Presence of Background Noise.

Automated cough sound segmentation is important for the objective analysis of cough sounds. While various cough sound segmentation algorithms have been proposed over the years, it is not clear how these algorithms perform in the presence of background noise, which can vary in intensity across different environments. Therefore, in this study, we evaluate the performance of cough sound segmentation algorithms in the presence of background noise. Specifically, we examine algorithms employing conventional feature engineering and machine learning methods, convolutional neural networks (CNNs), recur

Flexibility in motor timing constrains the topology and dynamics of pattern generator circuits.

Temporally precise movement patterns underlie many motor skills and innate actions, yet the flexibility with which the timing of such stereotyped behaviors can be modified is poorly understood. To probe this, we induce adaptive changes to the temporal structure of birdsong. We find that the duration of specific song segments can be modified without affecting the timing in other parts of the song. We derive formal prescriptions for how neural networks can implement such flexible motor timing. We find that randomly connected recurrent networks, a common approximation for how neocortex is wired,

Robust multi-class DDoS and fraud detection using a Context-Adaptive Deep Evolutionary Game Framework with CNN-BiGRU.

Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks have become a serious threat in modern computer networks, which can commonly be integrated with other types of attacks to evade detection by conventional devices. Existing deep learning-based intrusion detection methods have high identification capability. However, they are also highly susceptible to adversarial attacks, in which even slight perturbations to features can fool the model into misclassification. To address these issues, this study introduced a hybrid deep learning framework. It integrates Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Bidirec

Variational mode decomposition based prediction model for cough sounds using Xception-GRU classifier.

Cough is a popular pre-screening tool for the most respiratory disease diagnoses. Discriminating the abnormal cough from normal one by human ear is however challenging as minute pathological changes in auditory pattern go unnoticed and computer assistance is sought for the diagnosis. This study aims at developing a prediction model by analyzing the different frequency components of the signal in multiple dimensions. As a first step, the cough sounds are decomposed using variational mode decomposition (VMD) for five intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) followed by visualizing every IMF in bark frequ

Multimodal prediction of catheter ablation outcomes in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation.

The recurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF) following catheter ablation is a common complication in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation (psAF), increasing the risk of stroke and heart failure thereafter. Given the multifactorial nature of post-ablation AF, clinical predictions of successful ablation often suffer from poor accuracy and lack robustness. This paper proposes a multimodal prediction model for post-ablation AF, which extracts complex features from multidimensional data, including electrocardiogram (ECG) images, cellular characteristics, intraoperative and demographic informa

Artificial Intelligence for Aortic Pressure Waveform Analysis During Coronary Angiography: Machine Learning for Patient Safety.

OBJECTIVES: This study developed a neural network to perform automated pressure waveform analysis and allow real-time accurate identification of damping. BACKGROUND: Damping of aortic pressure during coronary angiography must be identified to avoid serious complications and make accurate coronary physiology measurements. There are currently no automated methods to do this, and so identification of damping requires constant monitoring, which is prone to human error. METHODS: The neural network was trained and tested versus core laboratory expert opinions derived from 2 separate datasets. A to

Molecular and Neuroimaging Correlates of Bipolar Disorder: Linking Inflammation, Mitochondria, and Brain Circuitry.

Bipolar affective disorder (BD) is a severe mental illness characterized by recurrent episodes of mania, hypomania, and depression, accompanied by progressive neurobiological changes that go beyond the classical concepts of neurotransmitter dysregulation. Increasing evidence points to the key role of the interaction between inflammatory processes, mitochondrial dysfunction, and disturbances within neural networks in the pathogenesis, course, and treatment response of BD. Neuroinflammatory processes, including elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and microglial activation,

Temporal spiking generative adversarial networks for heading direction decoding.

The spike-based neuronal responses within the ventral intraparietal area (VIP) exhibit intricate spatial and temporal dynamics in the posterior parietal cortex, presenting decoding challenges such as limited data availability at the biological population level. The practical difficulty in collecting VIP neuronal response data hinders the application of sophisticated decoding models. To address this challenge, we propose a unified spike-based decoding framework leveraging spiking neural networks (SNNs) for both generative and decoding purposes, for their energy efficiency and suitability for ne

A robust Parkinson's disease detection model based on time-varying synaptic efficacy function in spiking neural network.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease affecting millions of people around the world. Conventional PD detection algorithms are generally based on first and second-generation artificial neural network (ANN) models which consume high energy and have complex architecture. Considering these limitations, a time-varying synaptic efficacy function based leaky-integrate and fire neuron model, called SEFRON is used for the detection of PD. SEFRON explores the advantages of Spiking Neural Network (SNN) which is suitable for neuromorphic devices. To evaluate the performance of SEFRON, 2

Recovering time-varying networks from single-cell data.

MOTIVATION: Gene regulation is a dynamic process that underlies all aspects of human development, disease response, and other biological processes. The reconstruction of temporal gene regulatory networks has conventionally relied on regression analysis, graphical models, or other types of relevance networks. With the large increase in time series single-cell data, new approaches are needed to address the unique scale and nature of these data for reconstructing such networks. RESULTS: Here, we develop a deep neural network, Marlene, to infer dynamic graphs from time series single-cell gene exp

Predicting 3D soft tissue dynamics from 2D imaging using physics informed neural networks.

Tissue dynamics play critical roles in many physiological functions and provide important metrics for clinical diagnosis. Capturing real-time high-resolution 3D images of tissue dynamics, however, remains a challenge. This study presents a hybrid physics-informed neural network algorithm that infers 3D flow-induced tissue dynamics and other physical quantities from sparse 2D images. The algorithm combines a recurrent neural network model of soft tissue with a differentiable fluid solver, leveraging prior knowledge in solid mechanics to project the governing equation on a discrete eigen space.

Emergence of cortical network motifs for short-term memory during learning.

Learning of adaptive behaviors requires the refinement of coordinated activity across multiple brain regions. However, how neural communications develop during learning remains poorly understood. Here, using two-photon calcium imaging, we simultaneously recorded the activity of layer 2/3 excitatory neurons in eight regions of the mouse dorsal cortex during learning of a delayed-response task. Across learning, while global functional connectivity became sparser, there emerged a subnetwork comprising of neurons in the anterior lateral motor cortex (ALM) and posterior parietal cortex (PPC).
