[Paralysis of the common oculomotor nerve and contralateral cerebellar syndrome (Claude's syndrome). 2 cases caused by mesencephalic infarction].

Two cases of Claude's syndrome due to a mesencephalic infarction in the territory of the interpedoncular fossa arteries are reported. The first case had pupillary sparing while ptosis was lacking in the second case. Partial impairment of the oculomotor nerve suggests an intra-axial fascicular organization. However, the precise intra-axial pattern of the nerve is unknown in humans.

Quantitative susceptibility mapping in atypical Parkinsonisms.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Differential diagnosis between Parkinson's disease (PD) and Atypical Parkinsonisms, mainly Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) and Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), remains challenging. The low sensitivity of macroscopic findings at imaging might limit early diagnosis. The availability of iron-sensitive MR techniques and high magnetic field MR scanners provides new insights in evaluating brain structures in degenerative parkinsonisms. Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping (QSM) allows quantifying tissue iron content and could be sensitive to microstructural abnormalities wh

Physiopathology of experimental Parkinsonism in the monkey.

Postural or Parkinson-like tremor, which results from the impairment of mechanisms which are predominantly lateralized in the brain, is most likely related to the combined impairment of the dopaminergic nigrostriatal pathway and the corresponding rubro-olivo-cerebello-rubral loop (without excluding the possiblity that other nervous mechanisms interconnected with these structures may represent an alternative disturbance). The integrity of the internal division of the pallidum and the ventrolateral area of the thalamus and their efferent fibers as well as the motor cortex and certain of its cort

An autopsy case of corticobasal degeneration with inferior olivary hypertrophy.

We report autopsy results of a female patient who was confirmed pathologically as having corticobasal degeneration (CBD). This patient presented with progressive gait disturbance at the age of 66 years, and subsequently showed parkinsonism with a right-sided predominance and dementia. She was clinically diagnosed as having possible corticobasal syndrome without palatal myoclonus throughout the disease course. An autopsy at 72 years of age revealed that neuronal loss with gliosis was severe in the substantia nigra and the portion from hippocampal cornu ammonis (CA1) region to the parahippocampa

Relationships between regional burden of tau pathology and age at death and disease duration in PSP.

BACKGROUND: A definitive diagnosis of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) can only be established through neuropathological evaluations where four cardinal tau lesions are identified. Relationships between regional tau burden and disease duration/age at death is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate relationships between tau burden in different brain regions and disease duration and age at death in PSP and determine whether association are influenced by PSP subtype (subcortical/cortical) or co-pathologies. METHODS: We identified 45 patients with definite PSP who were evaluated at Mayo Clinic b

Saccadic eye movements in idiopathic blepharospasm.

Visually guided saccades, memory-contingent saccades, and antisaccades were studied with an infra-red reflection technique in 12 patients with idiopathic blepharospasm and in controls. Latencies of the three kinds of saccades were prolonged. Peak velocities and gains did not differ. Our results indicate an initiation defect in the saccadic system, which may be localized in the caudate nucleus.

A case of frontotemporal dementia and parkinsonism of early onset with progressive supranuclear palsy-like features.

We report a patient with frontotemporal degeneration and parkinsonism with mental retardation. The patient was a 54-year-old man who had parkinsonism that resembled progressive supranuclear palsy, frontotemporal degeneration and myoclonus. His family included many affected members. Neuropathologically, there was degeneration of the frontal and temporal cortices, the basal ganglia, the brainstem and the cerebellum. Microscopically, neuronal loss was severe in the frontal and temporal cortex, the globus pallidus, substantia nigra, red nucleus and dentate nucleus. Fibrillary changes were found in

Direct comparison between 18F-Flortaucipir tau PET and quantitative susceptibility mapping in progressive supranuclear palsy.

PURPOSE: The pattern of flortaucipir tau PET uptake is topographically similar to the pattern of magnetic susceptibility in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP); both with increased signal in subcortical structures such as the basal ganglia and midbrain, suggesting that they may be closely related. However, their relationship remains unknown since no studies have directly compared these two modalities in the same PSP cohort. We hypothesized that some flortaucipir uptake in PSP is associated with magnetic susceptibility, and hence iron deposition. The aim of this study was to evaluate the regio

Comparison of three magnetic resonance imaging measures of brain iron in healthy and cocaine use disorder participants.

Several magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measures for quantifying endogenous nonheme brain iron have been proposed. These correspond to distinct physical properties with varying sensitivities and specificities to iron. Moreover, they may depend not only on tissue iron concentration, but also on the intravoxel spatial pattern of iron deposition, which is complex in many brain regions. Here, the three MRI brain iron measures of R 2 * , magnetic field correlation (MFC), and magnetic susceptibility are compared in several deep gray matter regions for both healthy participants (HPs) and individual

No evidence of iron deposition in essential tremor: a susceptibility-weighted imaging study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of iron deposition in subcortical nuclei of patients with essential tremor (ET). METHODS: Twenty-three patients with ET underwent a standardized 3T-MRI protocol. We specifically assessed iron deposition using susceptibility-weighted angiography (SWAN) images in seven specific regions of interest (ROIs): the thalamus, putamen, globus pallidus, caudate nucleus, substantia nigra, red nucleus, and dentate nucleus. Tremor in ET patients was clinically assessed using the Fahn-Tolosa-Marin Tremor Rating Scale (FTM-TRS). ET patient data were compared with data obtained

[Deep brain stimulation of the posterior subthalamic area (Zi/Raprl) for intractable tremor].

Tremor in the proximal arm muscle, trunk, or legs is often resistant to the standard stereotactic surgery of the thalamic ventrointermediate nucleus. We have performed deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the posterior subthalamic area for those intractable tremors. The white matter area between the red nucleus and the subthalamic nucleus was targeted on the T2-weighted MR-CT fused image. Inhibitory effect on the tremor was tested with macrostimulation. The somatosensory-evoked potential recorded through DBS contacts demonstrated characteristic biphasic pattern. Eight cases with severe essential tr

Cerebellar cognitive affective syndrome with psychotic features in a patient with hypertrophic olivary degeneration.

Objective: Hypertrophic Olivary Degeneration is a rare condition causing transneuronal degeneration of the inferior olivary nucleus. Symptoms manifest as progressively worsening palatal tremor, ataxia, and eye movement disturbances that plateau after several months. Though rarely documented in the literature of this specific condition, disconnection of the inferior olivary nucleus from the cerebellum, and cerebellar atrophy represent a pathway to developing subsequent cerebellar cognitive affective syndrome. The presented case documents the neuropsychological sequelae of a 39-year-old female w

The Neural Distribution of Vasotocin, Oxytocin, Dopamine, and Serotonin in Two Australian Skinks With Contrasting Social Lives.

The neurotransmitters vasotocin, oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin are widely involved in vertebrate social behavior, and changes in their abundance and distribution in the brain have been linked to the evolution of complex sociality. Reptiles provide an excellent system in which to investigate the neural mechanisms of social living. Using immunohistochemistry, we compare distributions of these transmitters in two skinks differing primarily in social ecology: the family-living Liopholis whitii and the solitary Eulpamrus quoyii. We describe patterns of immunopositive signal for both cell bodies

Mononuclear cell leukemia in aged Sprague-Dawley rats.

A mononuclear cell leukemia in Sprague-Dawley rats is described in which liver, spleen, and lung involvement was a constant feature. The cell was 16 to 25 microns in diameter with round, oval or indented nucleus, and the cytoplasm contained bright red granules. This is the first report of such a leukemia in Sprague-Dawley rats and a comparison with mononuclear cell leukemia in other strains of laboratory rats is made.

Application of Quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the Diagnosis of Autism in Children.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the application of quantitative magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of autism in children. METHODS: Sixty autistic children aged 2-3 years and 60 age- and sex-matched healthy children participated in the study. All the children were scanned using head MRI conventional sequences, 3D-T1, diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI), enhanced T2*- weighted magnetic resonance angiography (ESWAN) and 3D-pseudo continuous Arterial Spin-Labeled (3D-pcASL) sequences. The quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM), cerebral blood flow (CBF), and brain microstructure of each brain area

Aging in deep gray matter and white matter revealed by diffusional kurtosis imaging.

Diffusion tensor imaging has already been extensively used to probe microstructural alterations in white matter tracts, and scarcely, in deep gray matter. However, results in literature regarding age-related degenerative mechanisms in white matter tracts and parametric changes in the putamen are inconsistent. Diffusional kurtosis imaging is a mathematical extension of diffusion tensor imaging, which could more comprehensively mirror microstructure, particularly in isotropic tissues such as gray matter. In this study, we used the diffusional kurtosis imaging method and a white-matter model that

Evidence that an amoeba acquired a chloroplast by retaining part of an engulfed eukaryotic alga.

Chlorarachniophytes are amoeboid algae with unusual chloroplasts. Instead of the usual two membranes that surround the chloroplasts of plants, green algae, and red algae, the chloroplasts of chlorarachniophytes have four bounding membranes. The extra membranes may reflect an unusual origin of chlorarachniophyte chloroplasts. Rather than inheriting the organelle directly from their ancestors, chlorarachniophytes may have adopted the chloroplast of an algal cell ingested as prey. Parts of the algal cell are postulated to remain within the amoeba as a reduced eukaryotic endosymbiont [Hibberd, D.

The motor innervation of the soft palate. An anatomical study in guinea pigs and monkeys.

In an effort to gain a more precise understanding of the motor innervation of the soft palate, a neuroanatomical tracer (horseradish peroxidase) was injected into the vela of nine guinea pigs and four monkeys. After 48 h the animals were sacrificed and frozen frontal sections were appropriately reacted with tetramethylbenzidine and counterstained with neutral red, and then evaluated by means of light microscopy. In all specimens retrogradely labeled neurons appeared in the brain stem. The distribution patterns of these labeled cells were to a large degree comparable in both the guinea pigs and

Treatment-resistant depression is associated with reduced brain entropy.

BACKGROUND: Brain entropy reflects the brain's functional complexity and encompasses both cognitive and affective processing. However, brain entropy remains to be systematically examined in patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD). METHODS: The study cohort comprised 48 adults with TRD and 38 healthy controls. All participants underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Sample entropy, an index of brain entropy, was calculated from blood oxygenation level-dependent time series for each of 166 regions of interest. RESULTS: At an embedding dimension (m) of 1 and a
