Omphalocele and gastroschisis: a collaborative study of five Italian congenital malformation registries.

During 1984-1989, 116 cases of omphalocele and 42 cases of gastroschisis were detected among 736,760 consecutive births in the area covered by five Italian congenital malformation registries. The prevalence rate was 1.6 per 10,000 for omphalocele and 0.6 per 10,000 for gastroschisis. Three additional cases were detected among spontaneous abortions, giving a total of 117 cases of omphalocele and 44 of gastroschisis. No variations in prevalence rates were observed among registries. A cluster of omphalocele was found in 1989 in Firenze. All cases were sporadic except for one infant with two sibs

[The OSCAR registry. Registry of acute coronary syndromes].

The aim of the OSCAR observatory was to describe the medical management of patients hospitalised for acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Demographic characteristics, risk factors, history of cardiovascular events, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures on admission and during the stay in hospital were recorded. From september 2000 to february 2001, 869 patients with acute coronary syndrome were enrolled in this survey. This sample of patients is quite similar to the one usually described in such studies with a male/female ratio of 2.7 and a mean age of 66. The initial diagnosis at entry was: 23.6% p

[Update of the Amputation Registry Germany (AMP-Registry)].

BACKGROUND: Medical registries are used to collect valuable patient data in order to check and control the quality and effectiveness of treatment approaches. National registries in the field of amputation and patient care, such as the Swedish Amputation and Prosthetics Registry (SwedeAmp) and the Limb Loss and Preservation Registry (LLPR) in the USA, gather information on prosthetic devices, materials, procedures and patient-related outcomes such as mobility and quality of life. Since 2011 SwedeAmp could generate significant insights into long-term outcomes after amputations and improve prosth

Feasibility of tracking mental health in cystic fibrosis registries: lessons from current practice.

BACKGROUND: Patient registries are central to improving cystic fibrosis (CF) treatment and outcomes. Although mental health (MH) is a top research priority, MH data in the CF Foundation Patient Registry (CFFPR) is limited. We aimed to inform the feasibility of including additional MH variables in CF registries such as the CFFPR. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional healthcare provider survey (N = 100; March-April 2023) regarding current practices in MH screening and data tracking at US CF programs. We then purposively sampled survey respondents to participate in a focus group and post-surv

Implementation and Management of Cancer Clinical Quality Registries in Australia: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: In Australia, clinical quality registries (CQRs) for cancer care are becoming increasingly common, requiring integration across multiple sectors of the health system. This study sought to identify the means to successful implementation of CQRs in Australia by identifying barriers and facilitators of implementation and sustainability, and drivers of acceptability and feasibility. METHODS: Online semi-structured interviews were conducted between May and June 2023 with directors, program leads, data managers, clinical champions, and other staff involved in implementation or managemen

Real-time data in cancer registries: Validation of an automated data extraction system.

Timely surveillance of cancer treatment requires real-time integration of electronic health records (EHR) data into population-based registries. We validated data from the Datagateway, an automated system that harmonizes structured EHR data across hospitals into a common model to support near real-time enrichment of the Netherlands Cancer Registry (NCR). Data from patients with acute myeloid leukemia, multiple myeloma, lung cancer, and breast cancer were extracted via the Datagateway and compared to NCR data and EHR source data. The system achieved 100% accuracy compared to registered NCR diag

Advancing Cancer Research Capability in Peru Through the Integration of Registries With Biobanks.

This article highlights Peru's experience in establishing a national tumor bank network, serving as a model for low- and middle-income countries. Launched in 2005 at the National Institute of Neoplastic Diseases, efforts accelerated under the 2021 National Cancer Act, which formalized the National Tumor Bank and its integration with the National Oncology Network. This initiative connects tumor banks across regional cancer institutes, enabling systematic biological sample collection, particularly from underrepresented populations, such as those with high Amerindian ancestry. Ethical oversight,

Heart transplantation from donation after circulatory death: a meta-analysis of national registries.

BACKGROUND: Although it has been widely recognized that heart transplantation (HT) following donation after circulatory death (DCD) can be a successful strategy to expand the donor pool, its clinical outcomes compared to donation after brain death (DBD) are still the subject of intense investigation. We reviewed the clinical characteristics of HT after DCD from the three largest multicenter nationwide registries, highlighting technical aspects, donor and recipient selection, and early outcomes. Moreover, we performed a meta-analysis of survival outcomes of DCD vs. DBD using reconstructed indiv

Issues in Distinguishing Sex and Gender in Surgical Registries: NSQIP and VASQIP Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Surgical registries do not have separate sex (the biological construct) and gender identity variables. We examined procedures specific to sexually dimorphic anatomy, such as ovaries, testes, and other reproductive organs, to identify "discrepancies" between recorded sex and the anatomy of a procedure. These "discrepancies" would represent a structural limitation of surgical registries, one that may unintentionally perpetuate health inequities. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study using NSQIP from 2015 to 2019 and Veterans Affairs Surgical Quality Improvement Program

Lessons learned from hip fracture registries - From the Scottish perspective to global practice.

Hip fracture is the most common serious orthopaedic injury affecting older people. In Scotland, 7000 patients sustain a hip fracture each year, and this is projected to rise to 10,300 a year by 2029. In this narrative review, we describe the origin and evolution of the Scottish Hip Fracture Audit, including key elements which have improved hip fracture care and outcomes within Scotland, and the current state of play of hip fracture registries around the world. We go on to discuss future directions for data driven improvements in hip fracture care, including international standardised data coll

Discordant pathologic diagnoses of myelodysplastic neoplasms and their implications for registries and therapies.

Myelodysplastic neoplasms (MDS) are a collection of hematopoietic disorders with widely variable prognoses and treatment options. Accurate pathologic diagnoses present challenges because of interobserver variability in interpreting morphology and quantifying dysplasia. We compared local clinical site diagnoses with central, adjudicated review from 918 participants enrolled in the ongoing National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute National MDS Natural History Study, a prospective observational cohort study of participants with suspected MDS or MDS/myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). Locally, 26

Nitrofurantoin-induced liver injury: long-term follow-up in two prospective DILI registries.

Nitrofurantoin is a synthetic antibiotic that is recommended as first-choice treatment for uncomplicated urinary tract infections. The prescription of this drug has increased dramatically, especially in Latin American countries. We described the demographics, clinical characteristics, biochemical features, and outcome of nitrofurantoin-induced liver injury. We analyzed 23 cases from the Latin American DILI Network (LATINDILI) and the Spanish DILI Registry. Causality was assessed with the RUCAM and RECAM scale. Of the 23 DILI cases included in our series, 96% patients were women, and the mean a
