Frontal operculum temporal difference signals and social motor response learning.

Substantial experimental evidence supports the theory that the dopaminergic system codes a phasic (short duration) signal predicting the delivery of primary reinforcers, such as water when thirsty, during Pavlovian learning. This signal is described by the temporal difference (TD) model. Recently, it has been suggested that the human dopaminergic system also codes more complex cognitive goal states, including those required for human social interaction. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with 18 healthy subjects, we tested the hypothesis that TD signals would be present during

Dissociating social reward learning and behavior in alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is associated with deficits in social cognition and behavior, but why these deficits are acquired is unknown. We hypothesized that a reduced association between actions and outcomes for others, i.e., social reward learning, would explain prevalent social deficiencies in AUD. METHODS: We conducted one laboratory study (n = 234) and one confirmatory online study (n = 258), comparing young adults with AUD to age-, gender-, and education-matched healthy controls on a standardized reward learning task. In the task, participants learned to maximize reward for

Editorial: Parent-Based Treatment for Childhood Anxiety.

Anxiety disorders are among the most common psychiatric illnesses in childhood and adolescence.1 The mainstays of treatment for childhood anxiety disorders are cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and medications.2 Both of these treatments focus primarily on the child. However, parents and families often play a major role in the reinforcement of anxiety disorders through accommodations that may adversely affect the child's development.3 Examples of such accommodations include keeping a child with separation anxiety disorder home from school, permitting a child with social anxiety disorder to avo

The Role of Alexithymia in Social Learning and Feedback-Driven Social Inferences.

Dynamic social interactions and feedback are crucial for understanding others' emotions, particularly when confronted with contradictory emotional cues. Alexithymia, a condition that co-occurs with many psychiatric disorders, is characterized by impairment in emotional processing. However, computational mechanisms by which it alters social inferences based on feedback cues remain unexplored. To examine this, 60 participants with low and high levels of alexithymia completed an emotional learning task involving contradictory social (verbal and visual) cues to infer targets' emotions. Computation

Prediction of physical activity and nutritional behaviors based on social cognitive theory in middle-aged population at risk of coronary artery disease in Bandar Abbas.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common cardiovascular disease and the main cause of mortality in developing countries. Since physical activity and nutritional behaviors are modifiable risk factors in people at risk of CAD, the present study aims to explore the effect of an intervention based on the social cognitive theory (SCT) on physical activity and nutritional behaviors in middle-aged population at risk of CAD in the city of Bandar Abbas. The present cross-sectional study was conducted on 519 middle-aged subjects who visited the healthcare centers in Bandar Abbas, southern Iran,

Culture, not nature: How traditional masculinity shapes male attitudes toward relationships.

Wahring, Simpson, and Van Lange attribute men's increased involvement in romantic relationships to biological, evolutionary, and social mechanisms. We argue, however, that the effects they describe are not inherent but culturally constructed - emerging from socially reinforced manhood ideals and evolving gender norms. To support this position, we draw on recent empirical research on traditional masculinity, the manosphere, and incel subcultures.

Physical activity and depression of Chinese students in Korea: self-efficacy as a mediator and social support as a moderator.

INTRODUCTION: This study, grounded in social cognitive theory, investigates the impact of physical activity on depression levels among international students, with a focus on the mediating role of self-efficacy and the moderating effect of social support, aiming to unpack the mechanisms linking physical activity to mental health in this cross-cultural population. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was employed, involving 903 international students from two South Korean universities; data were collected via standardized questionnaires and analyzed using SPSS 26.0, with analytical methods includ

Facilitators and Barriers to Participation in Exercise-Based Telerehabilitation in Individuals with Stroke: A Scoping Review of Quantitative and Qualitative Studies.

BACKGROUND: Barriers to stroke rehabilitation, including travel and other costs, impact women more, but may be mitigated with telerehabilitation. This scoping review aimed to identify and describe facilitators and barriers to participation in exercise-based telerehabilitation after stroke. Our secondary aim was to explore whether gender-related facilitators or barriers exist to participation. METHODS: Six electronic databases were searched for studies exploring facilitators and barriers to participation in exercise-based telerehabilitation in community-dwelling adults with stroke. Environmental enrichment promotes adaptive responding during tests of behavioral regulation in male heterogeneous stock rats.

Organisms must regulate their behavior flexibly in the face of environmental challenges. Failure can lead to a host of maladaptive behavioral traits associated with a range of neuropsychiatric disorders, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, and substance use disorders. This maladaptive dysregulation of behavior is influenced by genetic and environmental factors. For example, environmental enrichment produces beneficial neurobehavioral effects in animal models of such disorders. The present study determined the effects of environmental enrichment on a range of measures re

[Psychology of phobias in relation to dental anxiety].

In this article the most important etiologic factors related to dental anxiety are presented and form the basis for the exposition of a model for the psychologic development of dental anxiety. The model shows that personality factors related to emotion and cognition can influence the development of dental anxiety. In order for the anxiety to develop and become manifest it is also necessary that: 1: the individual experiences a given stimulus as presenting a physical threat, e.g. in the form of pain, 2: the individual has been exposed to an experience or a learning situation involving the stimu

Unpredictable Mixed-Valence Outcomes Induce a Chronic and Reversible Generalized Anxiety-like Phenotype in Male Mice.

BACKGROUND: Clinical anxiety is a generalized state characterized by feelings of apprehensive expectation and is distinct from momentary responses such as fear or stress. In contrast, most laboratory tests of anxiety focus on acute responses to momentary stressors. METHODS: Apprehensive expectation was induced by subjecting mice (for 18 days) to manipulations in which a running response (experiment 1) or a conditioned stimulus (experiment 2) were unpredictably paired with reward (food) or punishment (footshock). Before this treatment, the mice were tested in an open field and light/dark box t

Speech therapy for Parkinson's disease.

Twenty-six patients with the speech disorder of Parkinson's disease received daily speech therapy (prosodic exercises) at home for 2 to 3 weeks. There were significant improvements in speech as assessed by scores for prosodic abnormality and intelligibility' and these were maintained in part for up to 3 months. The degree of improvement was clinically and psychologically important, and relatives commented on the social benefits. The use of a visual reinforcement device produced limited benefit over and above that from prosodic exercises alone, except to patients with severe speech disorder.

[Medical Care for Homeless People - Individual Right and a Social Duty for an Inclusive Society].

Homelessness is a social phenomenon of increasing frequency in Germany and of high relevance for an inclusive society. Its expression is both caused psychosocially and moderated socioeconomically, often with negatively reinforcing feedback-loops. This overview describes health effects and strategies for improvement, using the example of the "Mainzer Modell". The comprehensive availability of adequate medical care are both an individual right and a social duty for an inclusive society.

Social anxiety and emotion regulation in daily life: spillover effects on positive and negative social events.

To minimize the possibility of scrutiny, people with social anxiety difficulties exert great effort to manage their emotions, particularly during social interactions. We examined how the use of two emotion regulation strategies, emotion suppression and cognitive reappraisal, predict the generation of emotions and social events in daily life. Over 14 consecutive days, 89 participants completed daily diary entries on emotions, positive and negative social events, and their regulation of emotions. Using multilevel modeling, we found that when people high in social anxiety relied more on positive

A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial of Motivation-Based Social Skills Group Treatment with Parent Training.

Despite the popularity of social skills groups, there remains a need for empirical investigation of treatment effects, especially when targeting pivotal aspects of social functioning such as initiations to peers. The goal of the present study was to conduct a randomized controlled trial of a 12-week social intervention (SUCCESS), which combined an inclusive social group with a parent education program. Twenty-five 4- to 6-year-olds with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) were randomized to SUCCESS (N = 11) or to treatment as usual (N = 14). Combining a peer group model with a parent training progr

Optimal dynamic pricing for public transportation considering consumer social learning.

Effective public transportation pricing strategies are critical to reducing traffic congestion and meeting consumer demand for sustainable urban development. In this study, we construct a dynamic game pricing model and a social learning network model for consumers of three modes of public transportation including metro, bus, and pa-transit. In the model, the metro, bus, and pa-transit operators maximize their profits through dynamic pricing optimization, and consumers maximize their utility by adjusting their travel habits through social learning in the social network. The reinforcement learni

Cocaine use in France has risen sharply over the past two decades, accompanied by a documented increase in prevalence, emergency visits, and hospitalizations for somatic and psychiatric complications. Its diffusion is not uniform but structured around social networks, specific festive contexts, and critical time periods—particularly late-night after-parties and private gatherings—which appear to play a central role in the initiation and normalization of use. Drawing on epidemiology and network theory, cocaine use can be understood through an epidemiological lens, where its

[Effectiveness of Behavioral Activation for the Treatment of Severe Depression in Clinical Settings].

Objectives Among interventions that have been shown to be efficacious in the treatment of depression, behavioural activation (AC) is receiving increasing attention as the evidence supporting its effectiveness continues to accumulate. Although the efficacy of AC for the treatment of depression has been established through numerous randomized controlled trials, studies evaluating the effectiveness of AC when implemented in mental health settings are rare and there is insufficient supportive data. This step is, however, essential to the validity and the generalization of the treatment to the real

Social attunement and alcohol use: The role of age and gender.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use typically peaks during adolescence and early adulthood, when its social reinforcement value is high, and then decreases as individuals take on more adult-like responsibilities. The present study investigates whether social attunement (SA) plays a role in higher alcohol use in adolescence as well as a lower alcohol use when aging. METHODS: This online study included an international sample of 683 alcohol users (16 - 81yrs). Participants completed a SA Questionnaire, an Implicit SA task (ISAT), and measures of alcohol use. The ISAT measured SA as the change in willingnes
