Choosing an alpha radiation weighting factor for doses to non-human biota.

The risk to non-human biota from exposure to ionizing radiation is of current international interest. In calculating radiation doses to humans, it is common to multiply the absorbed dose by a factor to account for the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of the radiation type. However, there is no international consensus on the appropriate value of such a factor for weighting doses to non-human biota. This paper summarizes our review of the literature on experimentally determined RBEs for internally deposited alpha-emitting radionuclides. The relevancy of each experimental result in selecti

RBE of quasi-monoenergetic 60 MeV neutron radiation for induction of dicentric chromosomes in human lymphocytes.

The production of dicentric chromosomes in human lymphocytes by high-energy neutron radiation was studied using a quasi-monoenergetic 60 MeV neutron beam. The average yield coefficient [see text] of the linear dose-response relationship for dicentric chromosomes was measured to be (0.146+/-0.016) Gy-1. This confirms our earlier observations that above 400 keV, the yield of dicentric chromosomes decreases with increasing neutron energy. Using the linear-quadratic dose-response relationship for dicentric chromosomes established in blood of the same donor for 60Co gamma-rays as a reference radiat

Radiation exposure associated with imaging of the chest: comparison of different radiographic and computed tomography techniques.

Exposure to ionizing radiation due to radiologic examinations is associated with the risk of induction of malignancy. This has to be balanced against the potential benefits of detection of a malignant tumor with radiologic examinations. For comparison of radiation exposure levels from different sources, the concept of effective dose equivalent was developed, which is used to assess an individual's risk of developing malignancy. Effective dose equivalent ranges from 0.06 to 0.25 millisieverts (mSv) with chest radiography in 2 views, 3-27 mSv with computed tomography (CT) using conventional exam

Neutron carcinogenesis in mice: a study of the dose-response curves.

Several experimental studies have been conducted with the objective to improve our knowledge of the types of dose-response relationships for radiation carcinogenesis in mice exposed to single acute doses. The experimental results on tumor induction have already been published and are here summarized with emphasis on the dependence on radiation quality, age at irradiation, and sex. These data indicate that the bone marrow, liver, and ovaries of the mice tested have an appreciable susceptibility to radiation carcinogenesis. However, the shape of the dose-response relationship depends on the tiss

Radiation tolerance of the rat rectum to fractionated X-rays and pi-mesons.

A 2.5 cm segment of the rectum of female F344 rats was irradiated with up to 10 fractions of X-rays or pions. Transient signs of acute proctitis were followed by chronic rectal injury starting at about 2 months. Recto-vaginal fistulas were frequently observed in animals with severe chronic injury. Two patterns of chronic injury were observed, an early type consisting of deep ulcers and fistulas, and a late type characterized by vascular injury, fibrosis and mucosal cysts. In a 4-fraction X-ray experiment, the influence of a low-residue diet was compared with a regular diet, showing no signific

Modelling the influence of treatment time on the biological effectiveness of single radiosurgery treatments: derivation of "protective" dose modification factors.

OBJECTIVE: To provide simpler models for adjusting total dose to compensate for significant variations in central nervous system radiosurgical treatment times, which vary and will influence treatment bioeffectiveness. At present, no allowance is made for time variations. A framework of simpler equations would allow radiosurgical outcomes to be analysed with respect to treatment time, and a system for dose adjustments between radioisotope and linac-based techniques with different treatment durations. METHODS: The standard biological effective dose (BED) equations for fractionated and protracte

The Green model and its relevance to solar UV risk assessment.

Computation of sunlight exposure doses allows one to valuate the risk of skin cancer types for which not only the action spectrum but also the dose-response relationship are known. The Green model is particularly appropriate for this purpose since it calculates the solar ultraviolet spectral irradiance through an analytical approach and then makes dose computation easy and fast. However, somewhat lengthy preliminary work is required to trace the entire Green model which is presented in several papers and is quite difficult to find, and to sum up the information concerning quantification of the

Tumor Control Probability Modeling and Systematic Review of the Literature of Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy for Prostate Cancer.

PURPOSE: Dose escalation improves localized prostate cancer disease control, and moderately hypofractionated external beam radiation is noninferior to conventional fractionation. The evolving treatment approach of ultrahypofractionation with stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) allows possible further biological dose escalation (biologically equivalent dose [BED]) and shortened treatment time. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The American Association of Physicists in Medicine Working Group on Biological Effects of Hypofractionated Radiation Therapy/SBRT included a subgroup to study the prostate t

A comparison of techniques for simulating set-up error and uncertainty in head and neck IMRT.

We have compared four computational methods for quantifying the effect of set-up error and uncertainty on delivered doses to targets and organs at risk in the intensity modulated radiation therapy treatment of head and neck cancer. These four methods were direct simulation, simple convolution, plus two modified convolution approaches. Discrepancies of up to 20% in the equivalent uniform dose (EUD) between direct simulation and simple convolution were estimated for the relatively superficial parotid gland at a systematic set-up error of 6 mm standard deviation and a random uncertainty of 2 mm s

Proton-specific dose and radiation quality constraints to reduce acute oral mucositis in head and neck cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced oral mucositis (RIOM) is one of the most frequent and impairing toxicities in head and neck cancer patients. The current clinical mitigation strategy for RIOM relies on photon-derived dosimetric constraints normalized by the proton generic relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of 1.1, and applied to the mean dose at the oral cavity. The approach neglects any dependence of toxicity on organ volume effects and radiation quality. In the present study, we provide a comprehensive characterization of RIOM in proton therapy patients, and develop proton-specific constra

Mid-range arc therapy for efficient and RBE-robust proton treatment.

Objective.Proton arc therapy (PAT) has the potential to improve plan conformity while enhancing normal tissue sparing; however, its clinical translation faces practical barriers related to radiobiological uncertainties and delivery inefficiency. This study introduces a novel planning approach, mid-range PAT (MRPAT), designed to enhance delivery efficiency and mitigate range-related uncertainties in PAT.Approach.MRPAT employs a single mid-range energy layer per beam direction, positioning the Bragg peak near the target center (mid-range) plane to confine range uncertainty within the target whil

Assessing Nonlinearity in Harderian Gland Tumor Induction Using Three Combined HZE-irradiated Mouse Datasets.

Recently reported studies considering nonlinearity in the effects of low-dose space radiation have assumed a nontargeted mechanism. To date, few analyses have been performed to assess whether a nontargeted term is supported by the available data. The Harderian gland data from Alpen et al. (published in 1993 and 1994), and Chang et al. (2016) provide the most diversity of ions and energies in a tumor induction model, including multiple high-energy and charge particles. These data can be used to investigate various nonlinearity assumptions against a linear model, including nontargeted effects in

Optic nerve constraints for carbon ion RT at CNAO - Reporting and relating outcome to European and Japanese RBE.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Until now, carbon ion RT (CIRT) dose constraints for the optic nerve (ON) have only been validated and reported in the NIRS RBE-weighted dose (DNIRS). The aim of this work is to improve CNAO's RBE-weighted dose (DLEM) constraints by analyzing institutional toxicity data and by relating it to DNIRS. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 65 ONs from 38 patients treated with CIRT to the head and neck region in the period 2013-14 were analyzed. The absorbed dose (DAbs) of the treatment plans was reproduced and subsequently both DLEM and DNIRS were applied, thus relating CNAO cl

Treatment of human contamination with plutonium and americium: would orally administered Ca- or Zn-DTPA be effective?

Accidental or deliberate dispersion of plutonium (Pu) and americium (Am) into the public environment could contaminate large numbers of people by inhalation. If measures to reduce the internal dose are considered appropriate, oral administration of either calcium (Ca) or zinc (Zn) diethylenetriaminepenta-acetic acid (DTPA) would be the simplest treatment. Published experimental data from rats on the effects of oral DTPA on the retention of inhaled Pu and Am show that: (1) orally administered Zn-DTPA is as effective as repeated intravenous injection for the decorporation of Pu and Am inhaled as

Development of a microdosimetry-based method to derive cell survival rates for evaluating the biological effects of BNCT.

Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) dose calculation often relies on fixed relative biological effectiveness (RBE) and compound biological effectiveness (CBE) values, despite their dependence on beam quality and tumor biology. We developed a microdosimetry-driven framework that predicts cell survival and RBE for BNCT by coupling PHITS lineal energy (T-SED) calculations with the microdosimetric kinetic (MK) model. MK parameters (α0,β,rd,y0) were derived for BNCT relevant cell lines (U87 glioblastoma, NB1RG skin fibroblasts, SAS human squamous carcinoma, and SCC7 murine squamous carcinoma) usin

Voxel-level linear energy transfer-driven dose conversion factors between LEM- and MKM-based treatment plans in carbon-ion radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Carbon-ion radiotherapy employs distinct relative biological effectiveness (RBE) models-the local effect model (LEM) and the microdosimetric kinetic model (MKM)-which differ in their dependencies on dose-averaged linear energy transfer (LETd) and absorbed dose. Conversion factors (CFs) between these models are essential for translating clinical outcomes across institutions; however, previous studies have neglected LETd-driven spatial heterogeneity. PURPOSE: This study aimed to quantify the impact of LETd on CFs by establishing a voxel-level framework for iso-effective dose convers

Plan evaluation tool for spatially fractionated radiation therapy for unresectable large tumors via spatial biological effective dose modeling in combination therapy.

We present the utility of a plan evaluation tool for a multi-course radiation treatment consisting of a highly heterogeneous SFRT plan followed by a course of curative radiation therapy for large and bulky unresectable tumors. For a more accurate plan assessment, this novel method calculates the voxelized biological effective dose (BED) spatially from each course and combines them into a single spatial BED distribution (s-BED). Ten previously treated head and neck (H&N) cancer patients with MLC-based 3D-conformal SFRT (15 Gy in 1 fraction) followed by a curative course of VMAT for 66-70 Gy in

Radiobiology for eye plaque brachytherapy and evaluation of implant duration and radionuclide choice using an objective function.

PURPOSE: Clinical optimization of Collaborative Ocular Melanoma Study (COMS) eye plaque brachytherapy is currently limited to tumor coverage, consensus prescription dosage, and dose calculations to ocular structures. The biologically effective dose (BED) of temporary brachytherapy treatments is a function of both chosen radionuclide R and implant duration T. This study endeavored to evaluate BED delivered to the tumor volume and surrounding ocular structures as a function of plaque position P, prescription dose, R, and T. METHODS: Plaque-heterogeneity-corrected dose distributions were generat

The effectiveness of 20 mev protons at nanosecond pulse lengths in producing chromosome aberrations in human-hamster hybrid cells.

Laser accelerated radiotherapy is a potential cancer treatment with proton and carbon-ion beams that is currently under development. Ultra-fast high-energy laser pulses will accelerate ion beams that deliver their dose to a patient in a "pulsed mode" that is expected to differ from conventional irradiation by increasing the dose delivery rate to a tissue voxel by approximately 8 orders of magnitude. In two independently performed experiments at the ion microprobe SNAKE of the 14 MV Munich tandem accelerator, A(L) cells were exposed either to protons with 1-ns pulse durations or to protons appl
