The learned physician as a charismatic healer: Urso of Salerno (flourished end of twelfth century) on incantations in medicine, magic, and religion.

Urso, the last of the great Salernitan physicians, was both an ardent defender of a theoretical, scientific medicine and the first in the medieval West to propose, in his aphorisms, a rational and naturalistic explanation of the healing power of incantations. The article explores this paradox and provides an in-depth analysis of Urso's highly original and hitherto ignored argument, as well as its intellectual and social background. According to Urso, the efficacy of incantations relies not on the power of words, but on the charismatic physician's "aura"-spirits emanating from his body-and the

The Role of Social Networks, House Ballrooms, and Religion in HIV Prevention for Black Gay and Bisexual Men: A Scoping Review.

In the United States, Black gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (BGBM) continue to face disproportionate burdens of HIV. Contributing factors include unprotected sex with multiple partners, limited awareness of HIV prevention, stigma, racism, and structural barriers to healthcare access. Biomedical prevention strategies such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing HIV transmission. However, social perceptions, stigma, and anticipated discrimination continue to influence uptake and adherence. This scoping review examined literature published

Religion and Responsibility-Taking Among Offenders in Colombia and South Africa: A Qualitative Assessment of a Faith-Based Program in Prison.

This paper examines whether religion contributes to offenders taking responsibility for crimes. Specifically, we assessed whether participation in The Prisoner's Journey (TPJ), a bible study program, increased or decreased responsibility-taking. We also examined whether religious offenders that did not participate in TPJ were likely to take responsibility for their offenses. For this study, we conducted a quasi-experiment in two Colombian and five South African prisons from 2018 to 2019, collecting data from personal interviews with a total of 73 inmates-42 TPJ participants and 31 non-particip

A diffusion tensor imaging study of brain microstructural changes related to religion and spirituality in families at high risk for depression.

INTRODUCTION: Previously in a three-generation study of families at high risk for depression, we found that belief in the importance of religion/spirituality (R/S) was associated with thicker cortex in bilateral parietal and occipital regions. In the same sample using functional magnetic resonance imaging and electroencephalograph (EEG), we found that offspring at high familial risk had thinner cortices, increased default mode network connectivity, and reduced EEG power. These group differences were significantly diminished in offspring at high risk who reported high importance of R/S beliefs,

An exploratory study examining the influence of religion on attitudes towards organ donation among the Asian population in Luton, UK.

Currently the demand for transplant organs far outstrips the supply in the UK. This problem is even more severe for the Asian population, who have been shown to be disproportionately over-represented on transplant waiting lists in some regions of the UK. Several commentators have suggested that religious and cultural traditions may be the major determinant preventing Asians from donating organs. An exploratory qualitative study was undertaken with the aim of examining the influence of religious beliefs, amongst other things, on the extent and direction of public attitudes towards organ donatio

Associations Among Experiences With Racial Discrimination, Religion/Spirituality, and Cigarette Smoking Among African American Adults: The Jackson Heart Study.

BACKGROUND: African American adults exhibit disproportionately high rates of tobacco-related diseases and associated death. Experiences with racial discrimination contribute to health disparities among African Americans, but more research is needed to understand associations between perceived discrimination and tobacco use as well as potential protective factors. PURPOSE: This study examined associations between perceived racial discrimination and cigarette smoking, as well as religion and spirituality as moderators of any associations. METHODS: Cross-sectional data were drawn from the Jacks

Female Sexual Pain and Depression in a Non-clinical Sample of Religious Israeli Jewish Women: Does Religion Make a Difference?

The association between female sexual pain (FSP) and various aspects of physical, psychological, and sexual well-being is well-documented in the research literature. Multiple studies have reported a link between FSP and depressive symptoms. This study aimed to examine the possible moderating effect of religiousness on the FSP-depression association among a non-clinical population. A sample of 163 adult Israeli Jewish women in heterosexual marriages, all identifying as religious, responded to an online questionnaire including measures of genito-pelvic pain, depression, and two aspects of religi

Can the DSM-5 differentiate between nonpathological possession and dissociative identity disorder? A case study from an Afro-Brazilian religion.

The aim of this article is to examine whether the diagnostic criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), are able to differentiate between nonpathological religious possession and dissociative identity disorder (DID). We use the case study of an individual who leads an Afro-Brazilian religious group (Umbanda), focusing on her personal development and possession experiences from early childhood to the present, spanning a period of more than 40 years, and examine these data following DSM-5 criteria for DID (300.14). Her experiences of possession

Sex, religion, and the single woman c.1950-75: the importance of a 'short' sexual revolution to the English religious crisis of the sixties.

The English 'sexual revolution' has recently become increasingly conceived as 'long', lasting many decades, and by some historians as a gradual phenomenon, but reaching a peak with the introduction of the oral contraceptive pill in the 1960s. At the same time, the 'religious crisis' of the same decade has been attributed by some recent scholarship to liberal Christian revolt within the churches, and largely unconnected with sex. This article offers different views. First, based on the illegitimacy rate, it argues that, after a period of decline, restraint, and only minor change in the period 1

This problem is particularly severe for the Black African and Black Caribbean populations who have a higher predisposition to end-stage renal failure. Several commentators have suggested that religious and cultural traditions may be the major determinant preventing Black Africans and Black Caribbeans from donating organs. Between Faith and the Needle: Intrinsic Religiosity, Belief in Science, and COVID-19 Vaccination in a Six-Religion Multilevel Path Model.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the crucial role of vaccination for global health, yet uptake has differed widely across religious groups. Religiosity may reduce vaccine acceptance by lowering belief in science, but cross-faith comparisons remain scarce. This study (N = 1,730) examined how intrinsic religiosity and belief in science jointly predict COVID-19 vaccination intentions and behaviors among Catholics, Protestants, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and non-believers. Multilevel path analysis showed substantial group differences. Non-believers reported the strongest belief in science, follo

The Place of Culture and Religion in Patterns of Disclosure and Reporting Sexual Abuse of Males: A Case Study of Ultra Orthodox Male Victims.

This article deals with reporting patterns of sexual abuse in males in a religious-cultural context through a case study of ultra-Orthodox Jewish (Haredi) men who were young victims of sexual abuse. The study is based on in-depth interviews with 40 Haredi men. The results indicate that sexual abuse involving ultra-Orthodox boys was and is underreported. Moreover, the results indicate that even when such incidents were reported, the avenues for disclosure were parents, educational-religious figures, and friends. It was also found that silencing in matters related to sexuality, viewing sexual ab

Partial substitution in the hidden curriculum of children's media: a comparative corpus analysis of religion-oriented and general-educational Turkish public broadcasting.

Research on social-emotional learning (SEL) has accumulated extensive evidence on programmatic outcomes but devoted less attention to the lexical-semantic shape of the educational input that children actually encounter. This study asks how religion-oriented and general-educational children's broadcasting operationalize SEL competencies at the level of vocabulary. Two Turkish public children's broadcasters, TRT Çocuk and TRT Diyanet Çocuk, were compared. The two share institutional auspices, regulatory oversight, target age range and broadcast format, yet differ systematically in curricular ori

The Role of Religion, Spirituality and Social Media in the Journey of Eating Disorders: A Qualitative Exploration of Participants in the "TastelifeUK" Eating Disorder Recovery Programme.

This study explores the religious and spiritual aspects of eating disorder recovery and the role of social media in the context of a third sector community-based recovery group in the UK. Four online focus groups explored participant perspectives (17 participants in total) using thematic analysis. The qualitative findings highlight that relational support from God is important in eating disorder recovery and coping, although this can be challenged by spiritual struggles and tensions. Relational support from people is also relevant where it offers a place to share different experiences together
