Barriers and strategies for taking medicines in adult patients with renal transplantation.

Adherence to the immunosuppressant medications is important for the proper function a renal graft, but there are factors that make this difficult. This study describes strategies and barriers to adequate intake of these medicines based upon 177 surveys in renal transplant patients. Medication adherence was reported to be high (84%), but there were barriers to taking medications (64.95%): the most common were that the pharmacy did not work medicines (28.81%), changes in medication or dose (24.29%), failure to remember (9.6%), and lack of time (6.78%). The most common strategies for taking medic

The use of cell phone reminder calls for assisting HIV-infected adolescents and young adults to adhere to highly active antiretroviral therapy: a pilot study.

Long-term medication regimen adherence is challenging in all populations, but in the HIV-infected adolescent population the frequency of poverty, homelessness, substance abuse, and mental illness make highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) adherence even more challenging. In 2003, we developed a pilot program for HIV-infected adolescents and young adults between the ages of 16 and 24 who were either going to begin a HAART regimen for the first time or begin a new HAART regimen. Participants received a free cell phone with a local service plan for approximately 6 months. Participants rece

SMS reminders improve re-screening in women and heterosexual men with chlamydia infection at Sydney Sexual Health Centre: a before-and-after study.

BACKGROUND: In 2009, Sydney Sexual Health Centre implemented a short message service (SMS) reminder system to improve re-screening after chlamydia infection. SMS reminders were sent at 3 months recommending the patient make an appointment for a re-screen. METHODS: Using a before-and-after study, the authors compared the proportion re-screened within 1-4 months of chlamydia infection in women and heterosexual men who were sent an SMS in January to December 2009 (intervention period) with a 18-month period before the SMS was introduced (before period). The authors used a χ(2) test and multivari

Effectiveness of a Behavior Change Wheel-Informed WeChat-Based Messaging Intervention to Improve Medication Adherence After Percutaneous Coronary Intervention: 12-Week Quasi-Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: Medication nonadherence after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) remains a major barrier to secondary prevention. Prior SMS text messaging interventions have shown inconsistent results, often limited to reminders without addressing behavioral or psychological determinants. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a theory-informed, WeChat-based messaging intervention for improving medication adherence and patient-reported outcomes after PCI. METHODS: A nonrandomized quasi-experimental parallel-group study was conducted from July 2022 to March 2023 at a t

Effect of SMS Reminders, Telephone Calls, and Transport Incentives on Enhancing the Completion of Tuberculosis Diagnosis and Initiation of Treatment for Diagnosed Patients: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Globally, tuberculosis (TB) programs have enhanced efforts to improve case detection, treatment initiation, and monitoring of treatment outcomes. However, less attention has been given to reducing the number of persons with presumed TB who never get tested for TB or those with confirmed TB who never start treatment in endemic regions such as Uganda. Such losses hinder progress toward attaining the 2035 End TB goals. The World Health Organization recommends mobile health (mHealth) interventions such as SMS reminders, telephone calls, mobile apps, and digital monitoring devices to fo

The effect of loss-limit reminders on gambling behavior: A real-world study of Norwegian gamblers.

BACKGROUND: Over the past two decades, problem gambling has become a public health issue and research from many countries indicates that a small but significant minority of individuals are problem gamblers. In Norway, the prevalence of problem gambling among adults is estimated to be just less than 1%. To help minimize the harm from gambling, the Norwegian government's gambling operator (Norsk Tipping) has introduced several responsible gambling initiatives to help protect players from developing gambling problems (e.g., limit-setting tools, voluntary self-exclusion, personalized feedback, etc

Effect of a telephonic alert system (Healthy outlook) for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a cohort study with matched controls.

BACKGROUND: Healthy Outlook was a telephonic alert system for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in the UK. It used routine meteorological and communicable disease reports to identify times of increased risk to health. We tested its effect on hospital use and mortality. METHODS: Enrolees with a history of hospital admissions were linked to hospital administrative data. They were compared with control patients from local general practices, matched for demographic characteristics, health conditions, previous hospital use and predictive risk scores. We compared unplanned

Effect of telephone reminders on adherence to anti-rabies vaccine amongst animal bite patients in North India: A randomised, single-blind, parallel-group, single-centre, interventional superiority trial.

OBJECTIVES: Rabies is a highly infectious viral zoonotic disease of the central nervous system with a near 100% fatality rate. Vaccine adherence is an integral part of achieving effective treatment. India accounts for 27% of the global deaths from rabies yearly. Rabid dog bites are responsible for 99% of these deaths. This study aimed to assess the effect of reminder calls on compliance with the anti-rabies vaccine among animal bite patients. METHODS: An interventional, randomised, single-blinded, parallel-group, single-centre study was conducted at the Anti Rabies Clinic, Rajindra Hospital,

Evaluating feedback interventions to improve healthcare worker hand hygiene adherence using an automated hand hygiene monitoring system.

BACKGROUND: Automated hand hygiene monitoring systems (AHHMSs) can monitor a large number of hand hygiene opportunities, and some provide real-time feedback; however, the impact of these systems is unclear. We sought to better understand how one of these systems improves hand hygiene adherence. METHODS: The AHHMS was installed in seven units of an urban teaching hospital, and healthcare workers, primarily nurses and nurse technicians, were enrolled. We used a prospective observational cohort design with multiple interventions, including providing individual adherence rates and real-time voice

Interventions to Improve Medication Adherence: A Review.

IMPORTANCE: Among adults with chronic illness, 30% to 50% of medications are not taken as prescribed. In the United States, it is estimated that medication nonadherence is associated with 125 000 deaths, 10% of hospitalizations, and $100 billion in health care services annually. OBSERVATIONS: PubMed was searched from January 1, 2000, to September 6, 2018, for English-language randomized clinical trials of interventions to improve medication adherence. Trials of patients younger than 18 years, trials that used self-report as the primary adherence outcome, and trials with follow-up periods less

An educational approach to improving physician breast cancer screening practices and counseling skills.

A multifaceted, individualized, physician education program designed to increase the breast cancer screening practices of community-based primary care physicians is described and the results are evaluated. Community-based surveys identified primary care providers with breast cancer screening educational needs who were assigned, using a factorial design, to an intervention or control condition. The sample included 154 control and 128 intervention physicians. The intervention consisted of a 1-2h in-office training program and/or self-study workbook. Self-reported overall breast cancer screening

Development of mHealth system for supporting self-management and remote consultation of skincare.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with spina bifida (SB) are vulnerable to chronic skin complications such as wounds on the buttocks and lower extremities. Most of these complications can be prevented with adherence to self-care routines. We have developed a mobile health (mHealth) system for supporting self-care and management of skin problems called SkinCare as part of an mHealth suite called iMHere (interactive Mobile Health and Rehabilitation). The objective of this research is to develop an innovative mHealth system to support self-skincare tasks, skin condition monitoring, adherence to self-care r

The effects of cannabinoid receptors activation and glucocorticoid receptors deactivation in the amygdala and hippocampus on the consolidation of a traumatic event.

Ample evidence demonstrates that fear learning contributes significantly to many anxiety pathologies including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The endocannabinoid (eCB) system may offer therapeutic benefits for PTSD and it is a modulator of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis. Here we compared the separated and combined effects of blocking glucocorticoid receptors (GRs) using the GR antagonist RU486 and enhancing CB1r signaling using the CB1/2 receptor agonist WIN55,212-2 in the CA1 and basolateral amygdala (BLA) on the consolidation of traumatic memory.
