ART Innovations: Fostering Women's Psychophysical Health between Bioethics Precepts and Human Rights.

Infertility is a highly relevant global issue affecting the reproductive health of at least 15% of reproductive-aged couples worldwide. The scope and severity of the infertility problem is even more prevalent in developing countries, mostly due to untreated reproductive tract infections (RTIs). Infertility, however, goes beyond the mere inability to procreate, but brings about profound psychological, social, and ethical implications of enormous magnitude. In vitro fertilization (IVF) and other assisted reproduction technologies (ARTs) have gradually become widespread therapeutic options. After

Health care provider perspectives on pregnancy and parenting in HIV-positive individuals in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Within the health system, limited attention is given to supporting the fertility and parenting desires on HIV-positive people. In this study, we explore health care providers' knowledge and perspectives on safer conception and alternate parenting strategies for HIV-positive people. METHODS: Between November 2007 and January 2008, in-depth interviews were conducted with 28 health care workers involved in providing HIV and/or antiretroviral services at public sector clinics in Cape Town, South Africa. Views on sexual and reproductive health services, pregnancy, childbearing and pare

A strategic assessment of the reproductive health and responsible parenthood programme of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Since 1991, Argentina has had provincial reproductive health laws, a far-reaching national programme and strong public consensus in support of reproductive health policies. Nevertheless, the challenges of strengthening public services, increasing the number of programme sites and resisting conservative attacks remain. This article describes an assessment of the reproductive health programme of the city of Buenos Aires, passed in 2000, whose objectives are to prevent unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases/HIV and to train health personnel. The programme operates in every public

Who pays and what pays off in sexual and reproductive health? A review of the cost and cost-effectiveness of interventions and implications for future funding and markets.

This Series paper provides a summary of what is known about the funding, cost, and cost-effectiveness of sexual and reproductive health and rights interventions, interrogates the likely impacts of increasing or reducing future sexual and reproductive health and rights funding, and provides recommendations for policy and regulatory changes from an economic perspective. Interventions that target HIV and sexually transmitted infections, contraceptive interventions, and abortion care are among the most cost-effective health interventions worldwide, but their funding is under severe duress. The first welfare case: money, sex, marriage, and white supremacy in Selma, 1966: a reproductive justice analysis.

King v. Smith, the first welfare case heard by the U.S. Supreme Court, overturned the Alabama substitute father law. Such laws directed or allowed welfare officials to use the sexual behavior and reproductive capacity of poor African American women to alienate this population from "cash-money"; to reassert political and bureaucratic control over the intimate relationships of African Americans, demonstrating that this population was unprepared for civil rights and full citizenship; and to shore up white supremacy in the civil rights era. The context for this case which originated in Selma, Alab

Informed choice in modern contraceptive method use: pattern and predictors among young women in India.

Research on informed choice in modern contraceptive method acceptance by young married women is pertinent in the broader context of individual freedom and reproductive rights, especially in countries where women continue to have limited control over their reproductive and contraceptive choices. This study in India asked: (1) is young married women's acceptance of specific modern contraceptive methods an informed choice? and (2) what are the enablers and barriers to informed choice? The study used data for currently married women aged 15-24 (N = 20,752) from the fourth round of the National Fam

Non-consensual sterilization of women living with HIV.

Women living with HIV are stigmatized and discriminated against. They often wish to have children, but they are subjected to the practice of forced (involuntary) sterilization in at least 27 countries under the guise of protecting maternal health and preventing the birth of infected infants. Some women are not asked to give consent, or a third party consents on their behalf. Others are given insufficient information or fed misinformation. The circumstances under which such women have been asked to sign consent forms for sterilization include fear, coercion, intimidation, and undue influence. C

Protocol to the African Charter on the Rights of Women: implications for access to abortion at the regional level.

Article 14(2)(c) of the Protocol to the African Charter on the Rights of Women enjoins States Parties to take appropriate measures "to protect the reproductive rights of women by authorising medical abortion in cases of sexual assault, rape, incest, and where continued pregnancy endangers the mental and physical health of the mother or the life of the mother or the foetus." This paper considers the implications of Article 14 for access to safe, legal abortion. It is submitted that Article 14 has the potential to impact positively on regional abortion law, policy, and practice in 3 main areas.

Legislation for advancing women's leadership in the health sector in India and Kenya: a 'law cube' approach to identify ways to strengthen legal environments for gender equality.

OBJECTIVES: This paper examines the availability of legal provisions, or the lack thereof, that support women to progress equitably into leadership positions within the health workforce in India and Kenya. METHODS: We adapted the World Bank's Women, Business and Law framework of legal domains relevant to gender equality in the workplace and applied a 'law cube' to analyse the comprehensiveness, accountability and equity and human rights considerations of 27 relevant statutes in India and 11 in Kenya that apply to people in formal employment within the health sector. We assessed those laws aga

Human rights violations in normalizing procedures on intersex children.

Intersex children in Brazil are still subjected to "normalizing" surgical procedures and subsequent bodily interventions to make their bodies conform to binary views of sex. Resolution n. 1,664/2003 of the Brazilian Federal Council of Medicine legitimizes interventions upon intersex bodies, being the only national normative instrument that address the subject. However, the demands of international intersex political activism have denounced how early childhood interventions for sex designation mutilate children's bodies and violate a number of human rights. This research discusses how early, ir

Infertility, Reproductive Equity, and Policy Pathways for Assisted Reproductive Technology in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

BACKGROUND: Infertility affects an estimated 1 in 6 adults worldwide, yet access to assisted reproductive technology (ART) remains highly inequitable, underscoring the need for policy action. The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) constitutionally recognizes reproductive rights and ART. However, public ART services are virtually nonexistent, highlighting a critical gap in reproductive health services. METHODS: We conducted a mixed‑methods study combining quantitative analysis of 146 women presenting for infertility care at Elikya Clinic (Kinshasa, 2020-2024) with a normative review of Con

"Contraceptives are like committing a crime": a qualitative study on contraceptive access and utilization in Libya.

INTRODUCTION: Contraceptive access is a critical component of sexual and reproductive health and rights, as well as an indicator of health system performance and broader commitments to gender equity. While global frameworks like Family Planning 2030 emphasize the need for equitable and rights-based access to contraception, Libya's centralized yet fragmented health system, compounded by political instability and weak national monitoring, has contributed to gaps in contraceptive service delivery and limited understanding of how women navigate access in practice. This study examines women's contr

Reproductive health care: services oriented to couples.

Historically, the combination of women's rights to care, population concerns and the development of female-oriented contraceptive methods resulted in family planning programs focusing on women's contraceptive needs and little else. The 1994 United Nations Population Conference in Cairo called for an expansion of programs to cover reproductive health in its broadest interpretation. As this concept has developed and been put into practice it has become evident that a key element in reproductive health services should be the inclusion of the sexually active couple.

A Reproductive Justice Response on Social Egg Freezing.

Current bioethical reflections on social egg freezing appear to be dominated by a rights-based perspective, as illustrated by the recent publication by Gao and Liu in this journal. We argue that, to avoid theoretical blindness in this debate, a more reproductive justice-oriented perspective is necessary. In this article, we critically address two interrelated points in response to Gao and Liu's analysis. First, alongside their discussion of reproductive freedom, we introduce a reproductive justice framework to illustrate how intersectional forms of oppression may inhibit individuals from genui

When choice is not performative: the struggle for agency among women accessing family planning services in Senegal.

INTRODUCTION: Despite ongoing efforts to improve family planning (FP) counselling as a means of increasing uptake and safeguarding women's sexual and reproductive rights, interactions between FP providers and users continue to play a decisive role in shaping contraceptive decisions. In practice, these encounters may influence method choice in ways that raise questions about the extent of women's reproductive autonomy. Drawing on theoretical perspectives on agency and informed choice, this study examines how women in Senegal navigate counselling and enact agency in FP decision-making. METHODS:
