Cranial osteology of Neotropical squamate reptiles of the genus Riama (Gymnophthalmidae: Cercosaurinae).

Cranial bones of squamate reptiles diverge in shape and structure across lineages, while preserving the basic skull plan. Therefore, variation in cranial morphology of squamates is key to understanding phylogenetic relationships, species delimitation, and lifestyles, which ultimately contribute to insights into their evolution and ecology. Nevertheless, although Gymnophthalmidae is the most diverse endemic non-ophidian squamate family in the Neotropics, studies on comparative cranial osteology within this lineage remain scarce. Herein, we thoroughly describe and compare the external skull anat

Rickettsial infection in ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) from reptiles in the Colombian Caribbean.

Although more reptiles are illegally traded in Colombia than any other group of animals, for both local and international markets, little is known about ticks associated with reptiles or pathogens associated with these ticks. In this study, ticks were collected from reptiles in Magdalena, Cesar and La Guajira regions in northern Colombia, and identified morphologically using taxonomic keys and molecularly by sequencing of the COI gene. In addition, Rickettsia spp. were detected by PCR amplifying the gltA, 16S rRNA, and sca1 genes. Ticks were identified as Amblyomma dissimile, representing the

The first case of genetically confirmed sparganosis (Spirometra erinaceieuropaei) in European reptiles.

Sparganosis is a zoonosis caused by the spargana (larvae) of Spirometra sp. (Diphyllobothriidae). Reptiles are particularly important vectors for the transmission of this parasite in Asia; however, their role in sparganosis spread in European wildlife is unrecognized. We investigated the infection of reptiles with Spirometra sp. in NE Poland, where several mammalian hosts have been identified recently and in the past. Of the 59 dead reptiles, plerocercoids were found in two grass snakes (Natrix natrix) from the Białowieża Primeval Forest (BPF). The Spirometra erinaceieuropaei species was genet

[Transfer of exotic ticks (Acari: ixodida) on reptiles (Reptilia) imported to Poland].

In the of period 2003-2007, a total of 382 specimens of reptiles belonging to the following genera were investigated: Testudo, Iguana, Varanus, Gongylophis, Python, Spalerosophis, Psammophis. The material for the present study was a collection of reptiles owned by the "Animals" Ltd from Swietochłowice (Upper Silesia, Poland), specialising in import of exotic animals to Poland, as well as the reptile collections of private breeders. The reptiles that turned out to be the most heavily infected with ticks were the commonly bred terrarium reptiles: Varanus exanthematicus and Python regius and they

From fins to limbs to fins: limb evolution in fossil marine reptiles.

Limb osteology and ontogenetic patterns of limb ossification are reviewed for extinct lineages of aquatically adapted diapsid reptiles. Phylogenies including these fossil taxa show that paddle-like limbs were independently derived, and that the varied limb morphologies were produced by evolutionary modifications to different aspects of the limb skeleton. Ancient marine reptiles modify the limb by reducing the relative size of the epipodials, modifying the perichondral and periosteal surface of elements distal to the propodials, and evolving extremes of hyperphalangy and hyperdactyly. Divergent structural trajectories for pallial regionalization within reptiles reveal conserved evolutionary blueprints.

The pallium is the evolutionary precursor of the neocortex and a central brain region underlying learning or social behavior, yet its histogenetic organization and cellular composition remain debated. Reptiles provide a key comparative framework to investigate pallial diversification and ancestral amniote traits. Here we analyzed the pallium of the turtle Trachemys scripta elegans and the gecko Paroedura picta using molecular markers, hybridization chain reaction, and 3D light-sheet fluorescence microscopy. We identify two subdivisions of the dorsal cortex defined by Satb1/Satb2 expression, co

Acarofauna of Neotropical reptiles: Integrative morphology and vector competence of zoonotic pathogens.

The Neotropical region stands out as a megadiverse area in terms of herpetofauna, hosting more than 4457 species, 2233 of which are distributed across South America. Reptiles are recognized as amplifiers and reservoirs of several pathogens, yet their role in disease cycles and the vectorial potential of their mites and ticks remain poorly understood. These hosts are infested by over 500 species of mites and ticks, classified into 61 genera across 13 families within the orders Trombidiformes (Acariformes), Mesostigmata, and Ixodida (Parasitiformes). Some of these arthropods may serve as vectors

Comparative Analysis of Tear Composition in Humans, Domestic Mammals, Reptiles, and Birds.

Tears are an important component of the ocular surface protection mechanism and are in close contact with the corneal epithelium and the environment. Their composition is well-known in humans; however, there are few investigations on the composition and function of tears in reptiles, birds and others mammals, which would elucidate the mechanisms governing the maintenance of ocular homeostasis. In this work, electrophoretic profiles and an evaluation of total protein, albumin, urea, glucose, and cholesterol concentrations in tears of semi-aquatic, terrestrial, and marine reptiles (Caiman latiro

Interordinal relationships of birds and other reptiles based on whole mitochondrial genomes.

Several different groups of birds have been proposed as being the oldest or earliest diverging extant lineage within the avian phylogenetic tree, particularly ratites (Struthioniformes), waterfowl (Anseriformes), and shorebirds (Charadriiformes). Difficulty in resolving this issue stems from several factors, including the relatively rapid radiation of primary (ordinal) bird lineages and the lack of characters from an extant outgroup for birds that is closely related to them by measure of time. To help resolve this question, we have sequenced entire mitochondrial genomes for five birds (a rhea,

Cytochemistry of blood cells in peripheral smears of some West African reptiles.

The distributions of lipid, glycogen, peroxidase, acid and alkaline phosphatases, beta-glucuronidase and naphthol AS-D chloroacetate esterase have been studied in the cells of peripheral smears from the wall ghecko and the crocodile. The erythrocytes react differently from those of mammalian erythrocytes with regard to peroxidase reactivity. The need to take such species differences into consideration when engaged in histochemical investigations is stressed.

Characterizing Primary Immune Responses Against Three Antigens in a Reptile.

Emerging diseases threaten wildlife worldwide and understanding immune function in the context of the ecology of an organism is critical in predicting disease outcomes. The immune response in reptiles is especially understudied, leaving major gaps in the ability to address disease threats. Freshwater turtles are especially imperiled due to a swath of anthropogenic impacts, including bacterial, viral, and fungal diseases. Because multiple novel pathogen types threaten turtles, understanding nuances in their immune responses may help predict how populations may respond to challenges and shape co

Development of the dorsal thalamus in a reptile: identification of subdivisions and their associated nuclei.

How the dorsal thalamus of amniotes (reptiles, birds, and mammals) is organized remains an important but incompletely answered question. Identification of meaningful subdivisions would greatly aid in its understanding. Because the dorsal thalamus is more simply organized during development, studies have examined this structure during embryogenesis. Most reports using this approach have examined the developing dorsal thalamus in mammals and birds. Only rarely has the development of the dorsal thalamus been investigated in reptiles. Regardless, any approach to identify subdivisions, the presumed

A global reptile assessment highlights shared conservation needs of tetrapods.

Comprehensive assessments of species' extinction risks have documented the extinction crisis1 and underpinned strategies for reducing those risks2. Global assessments reveal that, among tetrapods, 40.7% of amphibians, 25.4% of mammals and 13.6% of birds are threatened with extinction3. Because global assessments have been lacking, reptiles have been omitted from conservation-prioritization analyses that encompass other tetrapods4-7. Reptiles are unusually diverse in arid regions, suggesting that they may have different conservation needs6. Here we provide a comprehensive extinction-risk assess

COMPARISON OF SURFACE, ESOPHAGEAL, AND CLOACAL TEMPERATURES IN DIFFERENT REPTILE SPECIES.

The objective of this study was to compare surface, esophageal, and cloacal temperatures in awake iguanas, chameleons, and snakes at two different ambient temperatures and in alligators at one ambient temperature. Surface, esophageal, and cloacal temperatures were measured in all animals twice, with exception of the alligators, where temperatures were taken once. The first set of temperature readings was done at lower environmental temperature. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) with a mixed-effect model was used to analyze the temperature difference between esophageal and cloacal temperature aga

Morpho-functional characterization of the systemic venous pole of the reptile heart.

Mammals evolved from reptile-like ancestors, and while the mammalian heart is driven by a distinct sinus node, a sinus node is not apparent in reptiles. We characterized the myocardial systemic venous pole, the sinus venosus, in reptiles to identify the dominant pacemaker and to assess whether the sinus venosus remodels and adopts an atrium-like phenotype as observed in mammals. Anolis lizards had an extensive sinus venosus of myocardium expressing Tbx18. A small sub-population of cells encircling the sinuatrial junction expressed Isl1, Bmp2, Tbx3, and Hcn4, homologues of genes marking the mam

Detection of mycobacteria and chlamydiae in granulomatous inflammation of reptiles: a retrospective study.

A retrospective study on reptile tissues presenting with granulomatous inflammation was performed to detect the possible presence of mycobacteria and chlamydiae in these lesions. Ninety cases including 48 snakes, 27 chelonians, and 15 lizards were selected. Mycobacteria were detected by Ziehl-Neelsen (ZN) staining and a broad-range polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by DNA sequencing. To detect chlamydiae, immunohistochemistry with monoclonal antibodies against chlamydial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and a Chlamydiales order-specific PCR and sequencing were applied. Acid-fast bacilli were fo

Anatomical identification of a telencephalic somatosensory area in a reptile, Caiman crocodilus.

Telencephalic projections of a thalamic somatosensory area were investigated in a reptilian species, Caiman crocodilus, by means of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) neurohistochemistry. Injections of HRP into the medialis complex labeled axons that leave the ventral aspect of this nucleus to enter the dorsal peduncle of the lateral forebrain bundle where they ascend. These fibers course rostrally to enter the central portion of the lateral forebrain bundle. Here, axons turn dorsally, pass through, and probably synapse on, interposed neurons of the ventrolateral area, to end in a central portion of
