In vitro evaluation of regional nasal drug delivery using multiple anatomical nasal replicas of adult human subjects and two nasal sprays.

Quantifying drug delivery to the site of action using locally-acting nasal suspension sprays is a challenging but important step toward understanding bioequivalence (BE) between test and reference products. The main objective of this study was to investigate the in vitro deposition pattern of two common but different locally-acting nasal suspension sprays using multiple nasal cavities. Twenty anatomically accurate nasal replicas were developed from high-resolution sinonasal computed tomography scans of adults with healthy nasal airways. The airways were segmented into two regions of anterior a

Ethical challenges in sensitive research: a reflective narrative on managing the clinician-researcher dual role.

BACKGROUND: Conducting sensitive research in healthcare settings often presents complex ethical challenges, particularly when clinicians assume a dual role as researchers. This dual role, while providing valuable insight, can lead to ethical dilemmas when professional responsibilities intersect with research obligations, especially in resource-limited and culturally sensitive environments. This reflective narrative explores these ethical tensions through the lens of a qualitative study involving men living with advanced prostate cancer and their family caregivers. METHOD: The study employed a

Research participants and stakeholders' views on feedback of genetic research findings: a qualitative study of the H3Africa Kidney Disease Research Network in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that variants of the Apolipoprotein L1 gene in Africans and people of African descent increase the risk of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD). A study conducted by the H3Africa Kidney Disease Research Network showed that 28.2% of the Ghanaian study population carried 2 APOL1 high-risk variants. Relatives of patients with CKD may be at increased risk of developing CKD. Researchers of this project are faced with an ethical dilemma of whether, study participants and their relatives should be informed about their risk of developing CKD. The aim of this study was

"Do I Need Anything More Specific?": Experiences of Autistic Participants in a Language-Focused Research Study.

BACKGROUND: Autistic advocates have called for researchers to engage with the needs and experiences of autistic people when planning and designing research studies. The purpose of the present study was to better understand the experiences of autistic adults participating in a language research study and how researchers can design more accessible future studies. METHOD: The present study was a secondary thematic analysis of data recorded during a larger study of spoken narratives by autistic adults. During virtual research interviews, participants frequently expressed comments about the nature

" … it's almost therapeutic, right? Because it's almost like that session that I never had": gay men's accounts of being a participant in HIV research.

Limited research has explored how gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men describe the impact of their involvement in HIV and sexual health research. We enrolled 166 gay and bisexual men who tested HIV-negative at a community sexual health clinic in Vancouver, British Columbia, into a year-long mixed methods study. Thirty-three of these participants who reported recent condomless anal intercourse were purposively recruited into an embedded qualitative study. Analysis revealed rich accounts of the self-described, interrelated impacts of study participation: (1) pride in contribution a

Informed consent, deception, and the use of disguised alcohol questionnaires.

In preparation for a physician intervention trial to determine the effectiveness of treatment of alcoholism in a primary care setting, a study was conducted to determine patient reaction to a masked alcohol screening questionnaire. The disguised questionnaire was developed to improve the accuracy of self-reported drinking behavior and facilitate blinded randomization to an intervention and control group. Patient reaction was determined by a face-to-face structured interview. The interview was structured to elicit responses before and after the patient was informed of the true nature of the que

Ethical and legal duties in conducting research on violence: lessons from the MacArthur Risk Assessment Study.

This article addresses the ethical and legal duties that must be confronted in any study of the risk of interpersonal violence in the community. Ongoing research--the MacArthur Risk Assessment Study--on the markers of violence among released mental patients is taken as illustrative. Methods by which the researchers are discharging their legal and ethical duties are described and justified. Strategies center around the duty to protect research subjects from their own violence, and the duties to protect research staff and third parties from subjects' violence. By airing these rarely discussed is

[Proposal of a deontological framework for spanish biologists].

Deontology is the set of duties and obligations in which the correct act is specified in the exercise of a profession. The Deontological Codes (CD), in addition to respecting the legal framework in which they are inserted, must go beyond the laws insofar as they are a reflection of the ethical commitment of each profession; commitment to deontological principles, which also helps to shape your identity. The aim of this project is to provide, based on the bibliography and current legal and deontological regulations, a proposal to serve as a guide for the accomplishment of Ethic Codes for Biolog

"A study in nature": the Tuskegee experiments and the New South plantation.

This essay rethinks the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiments in light of a long history of experimentation in plantation geographies of the U.S. South. Turning to late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century discourses of the New South and to Booker T. Washington's Tuskegee Institute, this essay illuminates the extension of the laboratory life of the plantation into the twentieth century. The focus on personal hygiene at the Tuskegee Institute opened the door for alliances with public health initiatives early on, making the school's student population as well as residents of surrounding counties subj

Finding trials for participants: an ethnographic study of successful recruitment strategies for clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: Finding participants is one of the main barriers to the timely and successful running of clinical trials. Poor recruitment can lead to many issues, such as delays, which often leads to greater financial resources being put into the trials. We explore how a clinical trial centre with a good recruitment record is able to find participants for trials through successful innovative strategies. METHODS: Ethnographic observations were conducted over a 17-month period at a clinical trial unit in London, UK, supplemented with semi-structured and ethnographic interviews with staff and parti

Kinematic and Injury Response of Reclined PMHS in Frontal Impacts.

Frontal impacts with reclined occupants are rare but severe, and they are anticipated to become more common with the introduction of vehicles with automated driving capabilities. Computational and physical human surrogates are needed to design and evaluate injury countermeasures for reclined occupants, but the validity of such surrogates in a reclined posture is unknown. Experiments with post-mortem human subjects (PMHS) in a recline posture are needed both to define biofidelity targets for other surrogates and to describe the biomechanical response of reclined occupants in restrained frontal

Perspectives of Information Access in the Informed Consent Process for Clinical Research Participation in Australia.

Access to communication and information during the informed consent process for clinical research is essential for empowered decision-making. To build awareness of accessibility practices, this study aimed to explore current enablers and barriers experienced by potential research participants during informed consent procedures. A multimodal survey, capturing quantitative and qualitative data, was distributed through industry networks in Australia. The survey was open to people who had been involved in an informed consent process for a clinical research study. We collected survey data from Augu

Psychological Harms of HIV Vaccine Trial Participation in Tanzania: Could Post-Trial Participants Engagement Help?

BACKGROUND: Global health researchers are celebrating notable success in their efforts to develop preventive vaccines to curb the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) pandemic. HIV vaccine trial participants play a vital role, devoting their time, effort, and bodies to HIV prevention success. However, the conclusion of vaccine trials often shifts the spotlight from trial participants to the broader implications of the trial results, which may leave participants feeling neglected or abandoned. Little is documented regarding participants' psychological

Master protocol for a series of cohort-based randomized controlled trials to test tools to communicate research results to study participants and others with relevant lived experience: the SPIN-CLEAR Trials.

BACKGROUND: Research results are often not communicated to study participants or others with relevant lived experience. Effective communication of research results would help study participants understand their contribution to research and could improve trust in research and likelihood of research participation. Few randomized controlled trials (RCTs), however, have compared the effectiveness of research communication tools, and it is not known which tools work best for different people. We will conduct the Scleroderma Patient-centered Intervention Network-Communicating Latest Evidence and Res

Determining Ethical Incentives in Biomedical HIV Research: Insights from Researchers, Regulators, and People Living with HIV.

Incentives are crucial for recruiting and retaining participants in research studies, yet researchers and regulators often struggle to determine appropriate incentives due to ethical concerns and a lack of clear guidelines. We conducted interviews and focus groups with three stakeholder groups-biomedical HIV researchers (n = 12), institutional review board (IRB) members (n = 12), and people living with HIV (PLWH) (n = 69)-to explore their perspectives on incentives and ethical decision-making in biomedical HIV research. Our findings revealed disparities in perspectives; researchers and IRB mem

"Three in the Room": Embodiment, Disclosure, and Vulnerability in Qualitative Research.

The researcher's body in qualitative research is often absented, an absence that can render deceptively tidy research accounts. In this article, I reflect on the interplay of embodiment and disclosure in the interview dynamic and the way in which my body became an object of inquiry in the research process. Three qualitative studies inform the article: the first exploring the experiences of 40 people living with hepatitis C in New Zealand and Australia, the second comprising life-history interviews with 38 people who inject drugs in London, and the third following 27 people through hepatitis C
