Industry Sponsorship Bias in Collagenase Clinical Trials for Dupuytren Disease: A Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Collagenase clostridium histolyticum (collagenase) was introduced in 2010 creating a nonoperative treatment option for Dupuytren disease with promising results in sponsored clinical trials. A meta-analysis was performed to investigate industry sponsorship bias. METHODS: A systematic review of collagenase treatment of Dupuytren contracture was conducted. Articles containing mesh terms including "microbial collagenase" and "Dupuytren's contracture" were searched and limited to only clinical trials with similar protocols for inclusion. Meta-analysis of treatment endpoints of correcti

Challenges and opportunities for China entering global research and development for emerging infectious diseases: a case study from Ebola experience.

BACKGROUND: China has emerged as a powerful platform for global pharmaceutical research and development (R&D) amid the 2014 Ebola outbreak. The research and development impact of developing countries on prevention and control of infectious disease outbreaks has long been underestimated, particularly for emerging economies like China. Here, we studied its research and development progress and government support in response to Ebola outbreak by timeline, input, and output at each research and development stage. This study will contribute to a deeper understanding of the research and development

Pregnancy as a journey of care and connection: Indigenous women's experiences navigating health systems and community support.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy and childbirth are opportunities for Indigenous communities to welcome new life, integrate meaningful cultural practices, and tangibly strengthen communal wellbeing. Simultaneously, pregnant American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) women must navigate complex healthcare systems while experiencing structural inequities that contribute to elevated risks of complications and poor birth outcomes. This study explored the pregnancy experiences of AIAN women, examining how participants navigated healthcare systems, social supports, and structural challenges. METHODS: We condu

Do March-In Rights Ensure Access to Medical Products Arising From Federally Funded Research? A Qualitative Study.

CONTEXT: The high cost of new prescription drugs and other medical products is a growing health policy issue. Many of the most transformative drugs and vaccines had their origins in public-sector funding to nonprofit research institutions. Although the Bayh-Dole Act of 1980 provides for "march-in rights" through which the government can invoke some degree of control over the patents protecting products developed from public funding to ensure public access to these medications, the applicability of this provision to current policy options is not clear. METHODS: We conducted a primary-source do

The UK clinical research network--has it been a success for dermatology clinical trials?

BACKGROUND: Following the successful introduction of five topic-specific research networks in the UK, the Comprehensive Local Research Network (CLRN) was established in 2008 in order to provide a blanket level of support across the whole country regardless of the clinical discipline. The role of the CLRN was to facilitate recruitment into clinical trials, and to encourage greater engagement in research throughout the National Health Service (NHS). METHODS: This report evaluates the impact of clinical research networks in supporting clinical trials in the UK, with particular reference to our e

Perceived social support and its impact on alcohol treatment outcomes: a qualitative study among women with HIV enrolled in a clinical alcohol pharmacotherapy trial.

BACKGROUND: Motivation to engage in treatment and maintain adherence is essential for people with unhealthy alcohol use. Social support may increase motivation to engage in treatment. Still, there is limited knowledge regarding social support providers and types of social support that facilitate or hinder alcohol treatment participation among women with HIV (WWH). This study explores social support among WWH in Florida: types, sources, and perceived impact on drinking outcomes. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 WWH (mean age 49, 85% Black) with a history of unhealthy

Mental illness, supported education, employment and recovery: Ben's story.

Supported education programs aim to facilitate the successful return to higher education for people living with mental illness who may have experienced educational interruptions due to their illness. This article shares the story of Ben who lives with mental illness and his experience of participating in an Australian supported education course. The two authors draw on a qualitative life history approach as they reflected on Ben's experiences of mental illness, educational disruption and returning to education and employment. The losses associated with educational disruption and the positive a

National gambling experiences in the United States: will history repeat itself?

AIMS: The aim of this paper is to offer an account of the history and current status of gambling research in the United States. METHODS: A review of the literature. RESULTS: Gambling has been a part of society in the United States since its early history. However, it was not until 1980 that the medical profession in the United States first recognized pathological gambling as a psychiatric disorder. Today, it is still rarely diagnosed or treated, and relatively little federal funding is available to support research in this area. With the upcoming fifth revision of the Diagnostic and Statisti

Research and theory for Nursing and Midwifery: Rethinking the Nature of Evidence.

BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE: The rise in the principles of evidence-based medicine in the 1990s heralded a re-emerging orthodoxy in research methodologies. The view of the randomised controlled trial (RCT) as a "gold standard" for evaluation of medical interventions has extended recently to evaluation of organisational forms and reforms and of change in complex systems-within health care and in other human services. Relatively little attention has been given to the epistemological assumptions underlying such a hierarchy of research evidence. AIMS AND METHODS: Case studies from research in matern

A patient-led, peer-to-peer qualitative study on the psychosocial relationship between young adults with inflammatory bowel disease and food.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) are chronic gastrointestinal diseases that negatively affect the enjoyment of food and engagement in social and cultural gatherings. Such experiences may promote psychosocial challenges, an aspect of IBD often overlooked and under-supported in clinical settings and research. OBJECTIVES: This study explored the psychosocial experiences that young adults with IBD have with food via a qualitative patient-led research process. METHODS: Trained patient researchers conducted this study by engaging peers via semi-structured interviews and focus groups

Comparison of US Federal and Foundation Funding of Research for Sickle Cell Disease and Cystic Fibrosis and Factors Associated With Research Productivity.

IMPORTANCE: Sickle cell disease (SCD) and cystic fibrosis (CF) are severe autosomal recessive disorders associated with intermittent disease exacerbations that require hospitalizations, progressive chronic organ injury, and substantial premature mortality. Research funding is a limited resource and may contribute to health care disparities, especially for rare diseases that disproportionally affect economically disadvantaged groups. OBJECTIVE: To compare disease-specific funding between SCD and CF and the association between funding and research productivity. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANT

National Institutes of Health Funding to Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery at U.S. Medical Schools.

BACKGROUND: The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the largest supporter of biomedical research in the U.S., yet its contribution to orthopaedic research is poorly understood. In this study, we analyzed the portfolio of NIH funding to departments of orthopaedic surgery at U.S. medical schools. METHODS: The NIH RePORT (Research Portfolio Online Reporting Tools) database was queried for NIH grants awarded to departments of orthopaedic surgery in 2014. Funding totals were determined for award mechanisms and NIH institutes. Trends in NIH funding were determined for 2005 to 2014 and compared w

Pharmaceutical companies could serve their own interests by supporting research on the efficacy of psychotherapy on premature ejaculation.

For many men, the treatment of sexual dysfunctions such as premature ejaculation may well be most effective when pharmacotherapy is combined with psychotherapy. Yet the essential elements of psychotherapy that might best be combined with pharmacological-based therapy are currently unknown. Support for evidence-based studies that identify key components of psychotherapy that might improve positive long-term outcomes, including patient satisfaction, are needed. Pharmaceutical companies having a vested interest in achieving both treatment adherence and improved patient outcomes could benefit from

Room for improvement? A survey of the methods used in systematic reviews of adverse effects.

BACKGROUND: Although the methods for conducting systematic reviews of efficacy are well established, there is much less guidance on how systematic reviews of adverse effects should be performed. METHODS: In order to determine where methodological research is most needed to improve systematic reviews of adverse effects of health care interventions, we conducted a descriptive analysis of systematic reviews published between 1994 and 2005. We searched the Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE) and The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) to identify systematic reviews in wh

'I have a child i need to live for': a qualitative study of parenthood and the TB experience in South Africa.

Existing research highlights TB's economic and social stigma burdens and impacts behavior in households, but virtually unexplored is the dynamics of TB and parenthood. This qualitative study examines the interplay between TB diagnosis and treatment, and parenting experiences, focusing on the intersections of individual agency, societal expectations, and access to resources. From March 2021 to January 2022, we conducted in-depth interviews with 98 TB patients in Buffalo City, South Africa, including 44 mothers and 54 fathers. Guided by the Network-Individual-Resource (NIR) model, we applied lay
