Effects of resistance training on sleep of patients with fibromyalgia: A systematic review.

This study investigated the effects of resistance training (RT) on the sleep quality of patients with fibromyalgia (FM), through a systematic review. The search was carried out in the PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. Initially, 148 studies were found, of which six were included for qualitative analysis. Four studies showed significant improvement in sleep after RT. Compared to other exercise modalities, RT proved to be superior to flexibility training and equivalent to aerobic exercise. Interventions lasted from 4 to 21 weeks, the weekly frequency ranged from two to three

Adipokine responses to acute resistance exercise in trained and untrained men.

INTRODUCTION: Adipose tissue-derived hormones act as key mediators that may link active lifestyles to improved cardiovascular function. This study tested the hypothesis that a single weight training session would beneficially modulate adipokine profile in a way that would exert protection against endothelial dysfunction, in trained but not sedentary subjects. METHODS: Male subjects (n = 43) were categorized into four separate groups based on exercise history: 1) sedentary, 2) weight trainers, 3) runners, or 4) weight trainer + runners. All subjects underwent a single progressive leg press wei

Exercise and cognition in older adults: is there a role for resistance training programmes?

In recent years, there has been a strong interest in physical activity as a primary behavioural prevention strategy against cognitive decline. A number of large prospective cohort studies have highlighted the protective role of regular physical activity in lowering the risk of cognitive impairment and dementia. Most prospective intervention studies of exercise and cognition to date have focused on aerobic-based exercise training. These studies highlight that aerobic-based exercise training enhances both brain structure and function. However, it has been suggested that other types of exercise t

Resistance is not futile: a systematic review of the benefits, mechanisms and safety of resistance training in people with heart failure.

Exercise offers many physical and health benefits to people with heart failure (CHF), but aerobic training (AT) predominates published literature. Resistance training (RT) provides additional and complementary health benefits to AT in people with CHF; we aimed to elucidate specific health benefits accrued, the mechanism of effect and safety of RT. We conducted a systematic search for RT randomised, controlled trials in people with CHF, up until August 30, 2023. RT offers several benefits including improved physical function (peak VO2 and 6MWD), quality of life, cardiac systolic and diastolic f

Transmission of trained immunity and heterologous resistance to infections across generations.

Intergenerational inheritance of immune traits linked to epigenetic modifications has been demonstrated in plants and invertebrates. Here we provide evidence for transmission of trained immunity across generations to murine progeny that survived a sublethal systemic infection with Candida albicans or a zymosan challenge. The progeny of trained mice exhibited cellular, developmental, transcriptional and epigenetic changes associated with the bone marrow-resident myeloid effector and progenitor cell compartment. Moreover, the progeny of trained mice showed enhanced responsiveness to endotoxin ch

The acute impact of resistance training on fatigue in patients with pulmonary sarcoidosis.

Fatigue is the most prevalent symptom among patients with sarcoidosis, and skeletal muscle dysfunction is a common clinical feature, making resistance training (RT) a recommended treatment strategy. Despite lacking knowledge regarding whether high-intensity RT will aggravate fatigue, low to moderate-intensity is routinely used even if the evidence for this protocol to improve muscle strength is inconclusive. This study aimed to investigate whether one single session of high-intensity RT induces a higher increase in fatigue than one single session of moderate-intensity RT. In this randomized cr

Effects of flow and resistive training on respiratory muscle endurance and strength.

This study was conducted to ascertain whether resistive or flow type training would better improve both strength and endurance in the respiratory muscles of healthy subjects. Subjects performed a battery of respiratory strength and endurance tests before and after training, which consisted of either control, cycling exercise (E), inspiratory loading (IL), expiratory loading (EL), or hyperventilation (H) training for 4 weeks. Maximal sustained ventilation increased after training in the E and H groups. Both IL and H improved inspiratory fatigue resistance. IL improved maximal inspiratory pressu

Effect of cluster set resistance training combined with high-intensity interval training on cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness in untrained young men.

OBJECTIVES: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) combined with aerobic exercise (tDCS-AE) effectively reduces fatigue in patients with fibromyalgia. However, no study has assessed this method in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients with significant fatigue. Therefore, we evaluated the safety and efficacy of tDCS-AE for significant fatigue symptoms in adult female SLE patients. METHODS: This randomised, sham-controlled, double-blind study included 25 patients with SLE in remission or low disease activity (SLEDAI-2K £4) and with significant fatigue [≥36 points on the Fatigue Se

Effects of vibration training vs. conventional resistance training among community-dwelling older people with sarcopenia: three-arm randomized controlled trial protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Sarcopenia is a chronic and progressive disease, which is accompanied by the decline in muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance with aging, and it can lead to falls, fracture, and premature death. The prevention and treatment of sarcopenia mainly include exercise therapy and nutritional supplement. Exercise therapy is one of the most potential interventions to prevent and/or delay the progression of sarcopenia. Resistance training (RT), one of the most commonly used exercise types, is widely used in the treatment of sarcopenia, while vibration training (VT) is a pr

Are high-intensity interval training and low load resistance training two sides of the same physiological coin: a randomized control trial.

Resistance and endurance training are typically associated with mode specific physiological and functional adaptations with minimal overlap. However, low load resistance training (LL) and interval training (IT) demand maximal effort, induce fatigue over similar durations, and are characterized by comparable peak and average forces. Therefore, a high potential for overlapping functional and physiological adaptations exists following IT and LL. Untrained healthy adults (age 19-30) were recruited (N = 19). Participants' legs were randomly assigned to the LL (3 sets, 30% 1-RM completed to failure,
