Hospital mortality in New York State during 1983, 1984, and 1985 for diagnosis related groups (DRGs) that addressed principal diagnoses of otolaryngologic disorders was evaluated. Inpatient data from 291 acute care hospitals in the state indicated that 66.6% of hospital mortality for these conditions was produced in a single category, DRG 64--Ear, Nose, and Throat Malignancy (treated medically). The mortality experience of 371 employees assigned to acrylamide monomer and polymerisation operations was examined with particular emphasis on cancers at sites identified from animal studies such as the central nervous system, thyroid gland, other endocrine glands, and mesotheliomas. Standardised incidence ratios (SIRs) were calculated for two German population-based cancer registries of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) and Saarland to access risks for subsequent primaries. RATIONALE: Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is a very rare malignant neoplasm arising from clonal proliferation of atypical plasma cells.
