Impact of Placental Malaria and Hypergammaglobulinemia on Transplacental Transfer of Respiratory Syncytial Virus Antibody in Papua New Guinea.

BACKGROUND: Passively acquired respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) neutralizing antibody protects against RSV-associated lower respiratory infections, but placental malaria (PM) and maternal hypergammaglobulinemia might interfere with transplacental immunoglobulin transport. METHODS: We measured RSV plaque-reduction neutralization (PRN) antibody in 300 full-term maternal/cord serum pairs in 2 cohorts in malaria-endemic Papua New Guinea: Alexishafen (2005-2008) and the Fetal Immunity Study (FIS) (2011-2013). We defined impaired transport as a cord-to-maternal titer ratio <1.0 and a protective RS

Effect of transient breathing cycle on the deposition of micro and nanoparticles on respiratory walls.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: From various perspectives (e.g. inhalation exposure and drug delivery), it is important to provide insights into the behavior of inhaled particles in the human respiratory system. Although most of the experimental and numerical studies have relied on an assumption of steady inhalation, the transient breathing profile is a key factor in particle deposition in the respiratory tract. In this study, particle transportation and deposition were predicted in a realistic human airway model during a breathing cycle and the effects of steady-state and transient flows on the dep

Effect of breathing pattern on nasal airflow, air conditioning, and gas clearance in a patient specific upper airway model.

BACKGROUND: Breathing pattern influences not only pulmonary ventilation but also upper airway transport processes such as nasal heat exchange, sinus ventilation, and carbon dioxide clearance. This study used transient computational fluid dynamics to investigate how respiratory rate and waveform shape affect these processes in a single patient specific upper airway model. METHODS: A computed tomography (CT) derived upper airway model from one healthy adult male, extending from the nasal vestibule to the nasopharynx and including the maxillary sinuses, was used as a fixed anatomical model. Pre-analytical properties of different respiratory viruses for PCR-based detection: Comparative analysis of sampling devices and sample stabilization solutions.

After the decline of the COVID-19 pandemic, health systems were challenged by the simultaneous prevalence of different respiratory viruses causing a wide overlap in symptoms. This increased the demand for multi-virus diagnostic tests which require suitable pre-analytical workflow solutions in order to receive valid diagnostic results. In this context, the effects of specimen storage duration and temperature on the RNA/DNA copy number stability of influenza A/B, RSV A/B, SARS-CoV-2 and adenovirus were examined for four commercially available transport swab systems and saliva collection devices.

The immotile-cilia syndrome. A congenital ciliary abnormality as an etiologic factor in chronic airway infections and male sterility.

We investigated six men and a woman suspected of suffering from congenital immotility of cilia. All had chronic airway infections, and the men had immotile spermatozoa. The woman and three men had Kartagener's syndrome. The investigations included measurements of the mucociliary transport in the lower airways and ultrastructural studies of the sperm tails or respiratory cilia (or both). Mucociliary transport was significantly delayed. Sperm tails lacked dynein arms in five patients. Respiratory cilia from the women and two men lacked dynein arms and were irregularly oriented. The results suppo

Gender and strain contributions to the variability of buprenorphine-related respiratory toxicity in mice.

While most deaths from asphyxia related to buprenorphine (BUP) overdose have been reported in males, higher plasma concentrations of BUP and its toxic metabolite norbuprenorphine (NBUP) have been observed in females. We previously demonstrated that P-glycoprotein (P-gp) modulation at the blood-brain barrier (BBB) contributes highly to BUP-related respiratory toxicity, by limiting NBUP entrance into the brain. In this work, we sought to investigate the role of P-gp-mediated transport at the BBB in gender and strain-related variability of BUP and NBUP-induced respiratory effects in mice. Ventila

Changes in Oxygen Saturation and Mean Arterial Pressure With Inhaled Epoprostenol in Transport.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with hypoxemic respiratory failure have traditionally been considered one of the riskiest patient populations to transport, given the potential for desaturation with movement. We performed a retrospective cohort study to analyze our experience using inhaled epoprostenol in transport, with a primary objective of assessing change in the oxygen saturation throughout the transport. METHODS: The transport records of patients with severe hypoxemic respiratory failure or right heart failure, transported on inhaled epoprostenol, were reviewed. The primary outcome was the change in

Neonatal transport and therapeutic hypothermia: A focus on hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy outcomes in a tertiary center in northern Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal transport is a critical component of regionalized perinatal care and it has played a significant role in improving neonatal survival. However, contemporary clinical practices of neonatal transport in Taiwan remain underreported. This study aimed to comprehensively analyze the characteristics and outcomes of neonates transported to a tertiary medical center in northern Taiwan, with particular focus on those diagnosed with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and treated with therapeutic hypothermia (TH). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed medical and transport records o

Insect tracheal systems as inspiration for carbon dioxide capture systems.

Membrane technology advancements within the past twenty years have provided a new perspective on environmentalism as engineers design membranes to separate greenhouse gases from the environment. Several scientific journals have published articles of experimental evidence quantifying carbon dioxide (CO2), a common greenhouse gas, separation using membrane technology and ranking them against one another. On the other hand, natural systems such as the respiratory system of mammals also accomplish transmembrane transport of CO2. However, to our knowledge, a comparison of these natural organic syst

Environmental injustices of children's exposure to air pollution from road-transport within the model British multicultural city of Leicester: 2000-09.

The significant contribution of road-transport to air pollution within the urban arena is widely acknowledged, and traditionally explored in relation to health outcomes across a temporal scale. However, the structure of the urban environment is also of importance in dictating the existence of extremely variable traffic pollutant levels, which often tend to be linked with social disparities. Nevertheless 'Environmental Justice' studies have rarely tackled the adverse health implications of exposures from mobile sources (Chakraborty, 2009), or have applied statistical techniques that are appropr

High altitude impairs nasal transepithelial sodium transport in HAPE-prone subjects.

High-altitude pulmonary oedema (HAPE) occurs in predisposed individuals at altitudes >2,500 m. Defective alveolar fluid clearance secondary to a constitutive impairment of the respiratory transepithelial sodium transport contributes to its pathogenesis. Hypoxia impairs the transepithelial sodium transport in alveolar epithelial type II cells in vitro. If this impairment is also present in vivo, high-altitude exposure could aggravate the constitutive defect in sodium transport in HAPE-prone subjects, and thereby further facilitate pulmonary oedema. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to

Nasal potential difference increases with gestation in moderately preterm neonates on the first postnatal day.

At birth the mammalian airway switches from liquid secretion to absorption, an important mechanism in lung liquid clearance. Airway ion transport was examined on the first postnatal day in 38 moderately preterm infants (29-36 weeks gestation). The absorptive airway ion transport capacity was well developed regardless of respiratory condition and there was little capacity for Cl- secretion.

Function of ubiquinone in electron transport from reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide to nitrate and oxygen in Aerobacter aerogenes.

The possible role of quinones in the electron transport system of Aerobacter aerogenes was investigated. The only quinone found in measurable amounts in bacteria grown in minimal media under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions was ubiquinone-8. Membrane-bound ubiquinone-8 could be removed by extraction with pentane, or destroyed by ultraviolet irradiation, with a concomitant loss of both reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) oxidase and NADH-linked respiratory nitrate reductase activity. In the extracted membrane preparations, these enzymatic activities could be restored, both to

Kangaroo transport instead of incubator transport.

OBJECTIVE: Compared with in utero transport, incubator transport for preterm infants has several disadvantages including instability during transport with increased mortality and morbidity, lack of adequate systems for securing the infant in the event of an accident, and separation of mother and infant. As a new kind of postnatal transportation that bears some analogy to in utero transport and may be safer than incubator transport, we investigated kangaroo transport, transporting the infant on the mother's or other caregiver's chest. This article presents a description and preliminary data for

Bicarbonate transport along the loop of Henle: molecular mechanisms and regulation.

The loop of Henle (LOH) is an important site of renal tubule acidification. A combination of several techniques, including in vivo microperfusion, perfusion in vitro of the S3 segment of the proximal tubule and of the thick ascending limb (TAL) of Henle's loop, as well as quantitative PCR performed on isolated TAL, has permitted the definition of key transporters and their role in modulating bicarbonate reabsorption in physiological and pathophysiological conditions. Na(+)-H+ exchange is the most important transport mechanism responsible for bicarbonate reabsorption, although a small but signi

Pediatric Rural Interfacility Transfers by Emergency Medical Services.

OBJECTIVES: Interfacility transports (IFTs) are critical for the care of pediatric patients in the United States (US), particularly in rural areas that may have limited pediatric specialty resources. Given the paucity of data describing rural pediatric IFTs, we aimed to characterize pediatric rural IFTs in the US. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, observational study using the 2023 National Emergency Medical Services Information System dataset. Rural IFTs involving patients aged >1 day to <18 years were included and stratified into the following age groups: infant (1 day to <1 year), tod

Breathing during Exercise: Respiratory and Circulatory Interactions.

Under conditions of exercise the heart and lungs are linked in important ways. First, both the heart and lungs are linked in series as pumps for O2 and CO2 transport. Second, they are mechanically linked owing to their location within the thorax. This means that changes in lung volume (and intrathoracic pressure) will influence cardiac filling and ejection. The respiratory muscles cyclically contract during exercise to allow for gas exchange. This ensures that the partial pressures of O2 and CO2 in the blood are largely kept within narrow limits, while the heart and circulatory system ensures
