Prognostic Factors for Return to Sport After High Tibial Osteotomy: A Directed Acyclic Graph Approach.

BACKGROUND: High tibial osteotomy (HTO) is increasingly used in young and physically active patients with knee osteoarthritis. These patients have high expectations, including return to sport (RTS). By retaining native knee structures, a return to highly knee-demanding activities seems possible. However, evidence on patient-related outcomes, including RTS, is sparse. Also, time to RTS has never been described. Furthermore, prognostic factors for RTS after HTO have never been investigated. These data may further justify HTO as a surgical alternative to knee arthroplasty. PURPOSE: To investigat

The Ankle-GO™ score predicts return to sport after surgically treated unstable syndesmotic injuries.

PURPOSE: Objective return to sport (RTS) criteria following syndesmotic stabilization are limited. The purpose of this study was to explore the discriminative and predictive ability of the Ankle-GO™ score for RTS status following syndesmotic stabilization. METHODS: At 3 and 6 months postoperatively, 50 patients were assessed using the Ankle-GOTM score, which consists of four functional tests and two self-reported questionnaires. At 6 months, patients reported their RTS status using three possible responses: no RTS, RTS at a lower level or RTS at the same or a higher level than before injury.

Return to Sport, Reinjury Rate, and Tissue Changes after Muscle Strain Injury: A Narrative Review.

A major challenge in sports medicine is to facilitate the fastest possible recovery from injury without increasing the risk of subsequent reruptures, and thus effective rehabilitation programs should balance between these two factors. The present review focuses on examining the role of different resistance training interventions in rehabilitation of acute muscle strain in the time frame from injury until return to sport (RTS), the rate of reinjuries, and tissue changes after injury. Randomized, controlled trials dealing with a component of resistance training in their rehabilitation protocols,

An unusual injury pattern: arm wrestling injury, treatment modalities, clinical outcomes, and return to sport.

BACKGROUND: In the sport of arm wrestling, the great rotational force is applied to the upper extremity, which can result in muscle and tendon injuries in the shoulder, elbow, and wrist joints, and even bone fractures. The aim of this study was to present the treatment modalities, functional outcomes, and return to sport after arm wrestling injuries. METHODS: A retrospective evaluation was made of the trauma mechanisms, treatment modalities, clinical outcomes, and time of return to sports of patients admitted to our hospital with an arm wrestling injury between 2008 and 2020. At the final fol

Reactive Strength as a Metric for Informing Return-to-Sport Decisions: A Case-Control Study.

OBJECTIVE: Current return-to-sport decisions are primarily based on elapsed time since surgery or injury and strength measures. Given data that show rates of successful return to competitive sport at around 55%, there is strong rationale for adopting tools that will better inform return to sport decisions. The authors' objective was to assess reactive strength as a metric for informing return-to-sport decisions. DESIGN: Case-control design. METHODS: Fifteen elite athletes from national sports teams (23 [6.0] y) in the final phase of their return-to-sport protocol following a unilateral knee

Monitoring the Return to Sport Transition After ACL Injury: An Alpine Ski Racing Case Study.

Alpine ski racing is an extreme sport and ski racers are at high risk for ACL injury. ACL injury impairs neuromuscular function and psychological readiness putting alpine skiers with ACL injury at high risk for ACL reinjury. Consequently, return to sport training and testing protocols are recommended to safeguard ACL injured athletes against reinjury. The aim of this paper was to present a real-world example of a return to sport training plan for a female elite alpine ski racer who sustained an ACL injury that was supported by an interdisciplinary performance team (IPT) alongside neuromuscular

Analysis of Return to Sport and Weight Training After Repair of the Pectoralis Major Tendon.

BACKGROUND: The use of routine patient-reported outcomes after repair of the pectoralis major tendon (PMT) is often prone to the ceiling effect owing to the high functional demand of those who sustain this injury. HYPOTHESIS: A significant number of patients are expected to fail to achieve return to preoperative activity after PMT repair despite achieving significant improvements in functional score. STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. METHODS: A prospectively maintained institutional database was reviewed for all patients undergoing PMT repair from 2010 to 2016. Patients were

Factors affecting return to sport following hamstrings anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in non-elite athletes.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture is a common injury affecting non-elite and elite athletes. Although most ACL reconstructions restore the mechanical stability of the injured knee, the rate of return to sport (RTS) is varied. HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: We aimed to identify why non-elite athletes fail to return to pre-injury sport level. The primary objective was to assess the frequency of RTS (including type of sport, timing, level, and duration), and the secondary objective was to assess the surgical (injury, type of surgery, re-injury) and patient (demographics, function, sympto

Functional Performance Measures Used for Return-to-Sport Criteria in Youth Following Lower-Extremity Injury.

CONTEXT: As sport participation increases globally, so will injury-related risks. The process used to determine return-to-sport following injury is vital to future sport participation and injury prevention. Early specialization along with poor management of sport participation causes an increase in injury risk and potential long-term health consequences for youth athletes. OBJECTIVES: Previous injury is a common intrinsic risk factor for new injuries. Identifying functional performance deficits, defined by return-to-sport criteria, minimizes these risk factors and provides athletes with guide

Femoroacetabular impingement in 45 professional athletes: associated pathologies and return to sport following arthroscopic decompression.

Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) occurs when an osseous abnormality of the proximal femur (cam) or acetabulum (pincer) triggers damage to the acetabular labrum and articular cartilage in the hip. Although the precise etiology of FAI is not well understood, both types of FAI are common in athletes presenting with hip pain, loss of range-of-motion, and disability in athletics. An open surgical approach to decompressing FAI has shown good clinical outcomes; however, this highly invasive approach inherently may delay or preclude a high level athlete's return to play. The purpose of this study wa

Return to sport after a Bankart operation of the shoulder using the Mitek anchor system.

Sixteen athletes suffering anterior instability of the shoulder after primary or recurrent traumatic anterior dislocation were followed for a mean of 23.9 months after an open Bankart operation using Mitek anchors. Nine patients resumed sports an average of 4.4 months postoperatively, while the remaining seven patients did not return to sports at all. By comparing the group of athletes who had resumed sports and the group who had not, we found in the former group a lower mean age, a higher number of athletes who had inflicted their first anterior dislocation during sports and a larger number o
