Predictors of return to work among stroke survivors in south-west Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: Stroke is acknowledged globally and among Nigerian rehabilitation researchers as a public health problem that leaves half of its survivors with significant neurological deficits and inability to re-establish pre-existing roles. Consequent to the dearth of country specific data on return to work and its determinants for stroke survivors in Nigeria, this study investigated the predictors of return to work among stroke survivors in south-west Nigeria. METHOD: Two hundred and ten stroke survivors from five tertiary health facilities in Osun state, Nigeria responded to a validated th

Importance of participation in major life areas matters for return to work.

INTRODUCTION: The complexity of the process and outcome of vocational rehabilitation yearns for a multifaceted approach. This article investigates whether importance of participation in major life areas for men and women predicts the outcome of vocational rehabilitation. METHODS: This longitudinal study provides measure points at the start of the intervention (T1), at the end of the intervention (T2) and at a follow-up 6-12 months after completing the rehabilitation program (T3). Associations were assessed by nominal logistic regression. RESULTS: The importance of participation in work was p

Workers' compensation, return to work, and patient satisfaction after carpal tunnel decompression.

In the study reported here, we assessed satisfaction and return to work in workers' compensation (WC) patients after carpal tunnel decompression. Eighty of the 362 patients who underwent surgery met the study criteria; 42 of the 80 were found for follow-up; 40 of the 42 participated in the telephone questionnaire; 15 (38%) of the 40 received WC; and 39 (98%) of the 40 returned to work. Mean age of the 40 respondents was 47 years, and mean follow-up was 29 months. WC involvement was not related to return to work and did not affect satisfaction with overall outcome but was related to dissatisfac

Psychological and clinical predictors of return to work after acute coronary syndrome.

AIMS: Resumption of paid employment following acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is an important indicator of recovery, but has not been studied extensively in the modern era of acute patient care. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 126 patients who had worked before hospitalization for ACS were studied with measures of previous clinical history, ACS type and severity, clinical management, and sociodemographic characteristics. Depressed mood (Beck Depression Inventory) and type D personality were measured 7-10 days following admission. Among them, 101 (80.2%) had returned to work 12-13 months later.

Return to work after two years of total disability: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Little is specifically written regarding the details of clinical interventions with workers with chronic spinal pain. Specifically, the individual thought process behind the management of an injured worker is not often discussed except in clinical conferences or discussions with other clinicians. It is well known that once an injured worker is disabled from work for 2 years, successful return is unlikely. We thought it would be informative to illustrate the clinical approach we took with this case because of the history of long term pain and disability. METHODS: This paper describ

Return to functional hand use and work following open carpal tunnel surgery.

This study assessed recovery from open carpal tunnel surgery. One hundred and twelve operations in 75 patients (38 unilateral, 37 bilateral) were reviewed prospectively. A validated questionnaire was completed pre- and postoperatively. Additional information was collected regarding symptom severity at regular intervals following surgery. The time to regain all evaluated activities of daily living was 13 (range 1-90, median 7) days. Return to driving took 9 days and return to work 17 days, even although exactly half of the patients underwent simultaneous bilateral operations. We did not find an

Functional outcomes after surgery for spinal fractures: return to work and activity.

OBJECT OF STUDY: The literature regarding surgical treatment's impact on patient function after spinal fracture is sparse. Some authors have speculated that operative injury--the dissection of paraspinous muscle tissue, damage to spinal motion segments, implantation of spinal devices--may impair functional recovery in spine trauma patients. Nonoperative care has produced satisfactory results in some hands, but results are difficult to reproduce, treatment is resource-intensive, and functional outcomes are poorly documented. This study reports return to work and functional recovery in a 5-year

Getting to work with a physical disability: gaps in disability, transportation, and workers' compensation return-to-work policies and programs.

PURPOSE: Disabled people are less likely to be employed than those without disabilities. Research on the relationship between accessibility and the employment of physically disabled people has focused primarily on accessibility concerns within workplaces, neglecting challenges associated with travel to and within work, or 'work mobility'. Those few researchers who have addressed work mobility largely deal either with people with nonwork-related disabilities or with the return-to-work experiences of injured workers. Both literatures pay insufficient attention to the potential role of policy and

Back to Work, Running on Empty? How Recovery Needs and Perceived Organizational Support Shape Employees' Vigor Upon Return to Work.

Returning to work after extended holidays poses significant challenges to employees' psychological adjustment, yet this phenomenon remains underexplored in organizational research. Drawing on the Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, this study develops and tests a moderated mediation model to examine how pre-holiday work-related irritation influences post-holiday workplace vigor through heightened need for recovery, and how perceived organizational support buffers this process. Data were collected through a four-wave time-lagged design surrounding the Chinese Spring Festival, with a final s

Workplace Factors Associated With Return to Work After Mild-to-Moderate Traumatic Brain Injury.

OBJECTIVE: Sociodemographic and injury-related predictors for return to work (RTW) after mild-to-moderate traumatic brain injury (TBI) have been extensively explored. However, there is a knowledge gap regarding work-related predictors of RTW. The main aim of this study was to explore work-related predictors of work participation 6 and 12 months after mild-to-moderate TBI. SETTING: Data were collected at baseline 8 to 12 weeks after injury, and 3, 6, and 12 months after baseline, at a specialized TBI rehabilitation outpatient clinic at Oslo University Hospital, Oslo, Norway. The importance of return to work: How to achieve optimal reintegration in ACS patients.

The vocational reintegration of patients after an acute coronary syndrome is a crucial step towards complete convalescence from the social as well as the individual point of view. Return to work rates are determined by medical parameters such as left ventricular function, residual ischaemia and heart rhythm stability, as well as by occupational requirement profile such as blue or white collar work, night shifts and the ability to commute (which is, in part, determined by physical fitness). Psychosocial factors including depression, self-perceived health situation and pre-existing cognitive imp

Disease evaluated on return-to-work examinations: aviation ground personnel compared to other workers.

Aviation ground personnel are subjected to a wide range of chemical and physical exposures that may lead the occupational physician to see a different spectrum of morbidity in the airport compared to other settings. It is essential to determine the most common medical problems in airport ground personnel in order to identify possible work-related conditions and in order to set the priorities for establishing health promotion programs and training occupational physicians. We compiled the diagnoses in 1000 consecutive visits of ground workers to the airport clinic for return-to-work examinations

Resuming work roles after injury in a low-income context: Multiple factors influencing the return to work outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Return to work (RTW) is an important outcome indicator for the effectiveness of rehabilitation services, and the functional status and overall recovery among individuals who have experienced injury. Despite the rising incidence of traumatic injury among economically productive citizens in Ethiopia, there is a paucity of evidence about the RTW status of injury survivors. This study examined factors associated with RTW success and determinants of time to RTW after injury in Ethiopia. METHODS: An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted to collect data retrospectively on
