Reports of Rhipicephalus microplus resistant populations worldwide have increased extensively, making it difficult to control this ectoparasite. The adult immersion test, commonly used to screen for acaricide resistance, produces the results only after 40 days of the tick collection because it needs the eggs to be laid and larvae to hatch. The present study aims to develop an automatic method, based on deep learning, to predict the hatching of R. microplus larva based on egg morphology. Initially, the time course of embryonic development of tick eggs was performed to discriminate between viabl

A fine-toothed comb found in the Judean Desert and resembling an ancient louse comb was examined. Based on radiocarbon dating, it ranged between 1660 AD and 1950 AD. From the material accumulated between the teeth, an oribatid mite, a pseudoscorpion, exuviae of beetle larvae, a sucking louse (Polyplax brachyrrhyncha Cummings, 1915), as well as a fully engorged larva and a nymph of the ixodid tick Rhipicephalus turanicus Pomerantzev, 1936 were recorded. Additionally, the comb included numerous hairs of a spiny mouse (Acomys sp.). Although finding mites, beetle larvae, and a pseudoscorpion on a

In this report, the transmission efficacy of Babesia ovis, the principal causative agent of ovine babesiosis, was studied by infestation of lambs with different Rhipicephalus bursa stages or by injection of infected blood. Infected blood injection induced acute babesiosis in splenectomized lambs, while only mild clinical signs were observed in intact animals. Both splenectomized and intact lambs developed high antibody titer, detectable for at least 180 days post infection. Infestation of splenectomized and intact lambs with infected tick larvae did not induce clinical babesiosis or specific s

BACKGROUND: Ticks are blood-feeding arthropods that can affect human and animal health both directly by blood-feeding and indirectly by transmitting pathogens. The cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus is one of the most economically important ectoparasites of bovines worldwide and it is responsible for the transmission of the protozoan Babesia bovis, the etiological agent of bovine babesiosis. Aquaporins (AQPs) are water channel proteins implicated in physiological mechanisms of osmoregulation. Members of the AQP family are critical for blood-feeding arthropods considering the extre

Hyalomma anatolicum anatolicum and Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus are the most economically important tick species in India and other tropical and subtropical regions of the world and transmit pathogens causing animal and human diseases. We demonstrated that vaccination of animal by rHaa86 could be used for the control of both H. a. anatolicum and R. (B.) microplus infestations. By comparing the efficacy of rHaa86 and rBm86, it was observed that vaccine based on rHaa86 will be more effective in controlling homologous challenge infestations (68·7% against larvae and 45·8% against adults).

Ticks are acaridae ectoparasites that, while taking a blood meal, can transmit viruses, bacteria, protozoa and filarial nematodes, which cause a variety of human and animal illnesses. The use of chemical pesticides constitutes the primary measure for control of these ectoparasites. However, the intensive use of these chemicals has drawbacks such as the contamination of food, environmental pollution and development of resistance by ectoparasites. Vaccination is considered a promising alternative for controlling infestations by ectoparasites. Although emerging tick proteins have been identified

It has been speculated that ticks may serve as vectors of Bartonella species. Circumstantial, clinical, epidemiological and serological evidence suggest that B. vinsonii subspecies berkhoffii (B. v. berkhoffii) might be transmitted by Rhipicephalus sanguineus. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether adult R. sanguineus ticks can be infected with a B. v. berkhoffii genotype II isolate via capillary tube feeding and whether the infection can then be transmitted from adult females to their eggs via trans-ovarial transmission. Furthermore, tick fecal material was also collected a

Rhipicephalus sanguineus, commonly known as the brown dog tick, is a three-host tick that feeds primarily on dogs and occasionally on other hosts, including humans. R. sanguineus ticks are widely distributed around the world and they are known vectors of pathogens, such as Babesia canis, Ehrlichia canis, and Rickettsia conorii. The increasing number of cases of human parasitism by R. sanguineus ticks reported in the literature indicates that the interaction between humans and R. sanguineus ticks may be more common than it is actually recognized. The indiscriminate use of acaricides is an emerg

The dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus Latreille, 1806 (Acari: Ixodidae), is a public health problem since it is widely distributed in Italy and because of its role in the transmission of many pathogens to man and dog which is its preferred host. This review deals with the main aspects of the biology and ecology of Rh. sanguineus habitat, developmental time, distribution and seasonality, behaviour and vector competence. Moreover, the preminent role of Rh, sanguineus in the transmission of boutonneuse fever is discussed.

The authors examine the epidemiologic features of Mediterranean spotted fever in France in light of the bioecological peculiarities of each of the three known member of the Rhipicephalus sanguineus tick group (R. sanguineus, R. turanicus, R. pusillus). The results show that R. sanguineus is the main vector. Certain aspects of this tick species are of interest: affinity for man, close contact with humans for a long periods, peak of tick population (preimaginal stages) at the same time as the peak of the disease. The largest populations of R. sanguineus are noted in the endemic zone of human ric

The indiscriminate use of synthetic acaricides in the control of Rhipicephalus microplus ticks results in the accumulation of residues in animal products and the environment, and favors the emergence of resistant strains, making it necessary to develop new control alternatives. Extracts of Metarhizium anisopliae (MA) and M. robertsii (MR) represent a promising strategy, as they contain biodegradable and specific compounds, such as enzymes. This study evaluated the effects of active and denatured extracts of MA and MR, isolated or combined with deltamethrin, on the mortality and morphology of t

The cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus is the most economically important ectoparasite worldwide, affecting animal health, welfare, and cattle production in tropical and subtropical regions. Anti-tick vaccines have emerged as a promising alternative to chemical acaricides for cattle tick control. To date, studies with a peptide derived from the RmS-17 antigen have demonstrated protective efficacy against R. microplus tick infestation in cattle and shown the ability to elicit a strong, specific humoral immune response. Based on these findings, the present study evaluated the direct effects of

Pinenes are bicyclic monoterpenes that contain two constitutional isomers, alpha- and beta-pinene. Both exhibit a wide range of biological activities, including fungicidal, insecticidal, antimicrobial and antibacterial effects, and are found in the essential oil of numerous plant species with acaricidal properties. Thus, the objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of sublethal concentrations of alpha- and beta-pinene, diluted in 2 % Tween 80, on the morphology of the ovary of semi-engorged Rhipicephalus microplus female ticks. For this, the ticks were immersed in different concen

The aim of this study was therefore to investigate the relationship between laboratory (Larval Packet Test -LPT; Larval Immersion Test - LIT; Adult Immersion Test - AIT) and field studies using active ingredients or commercial formulations to control R. microplus in a tropical region. This comparative study was carried out with four populations of R. microplus from four Brazilian farms. For laboratory assays, technical grade compounds of cypermethrin and chlorpyrifos were used in the LPT, while fipronil and ivermectin were used in the LIT. The AIT was conducted using commercial spray formulati

Due to the presence of Trypanosoma vivax DNA in ticks, transovarian and mechanical transmission is suspected. The present study aimed to evaluate (i) the presence of T. vivax in R. microplus that fed on animals with acute trypanosomosis; (ii) the transovarian transmission; and (iii) the ability of larvae and males to mechanically transmit T. vivax to cattle in a region without a cyclic vector. To this end, six calves were experimentally infected with T. vivax on day 0, and after different intervals, these animals were infested with cattle tick larvae. Before oviposition, the content of engorge

INTRODUCTION: Rhipicephalus microplus, an important cattle ectoparasite, is responsible for a substantial negative impact on the economy due to productivity loss. The emergence of resistance to widely used commercial acaricides has sparked efforts to explore alternative products for tick control.
METHODS: To address this challenge, innovative solutions targeting essential tick enzymes, like glutathione S-transferase (GST), have gained attention. Dimeric flavonoids, particularly brachydins (BRAs), have demonstrated various biological activities, including antiparasitic effects. The objectives

Tick control mainly depends on using chemical acaricides that have led to the emergence of resistant tick populations along with environmental hazards. Natural alternatives including essential oils are now widely used to avoid the undesirable effects of chemicals on human, animals and environment. In this study, three commercial oils (myrrh, patchouli, and cypress) and their nanoemulsions (NEs) were tested against Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato unfed adults. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were used to characterize the nanoemulsions. Four concentr

Currently, livestock owners manage tick infestations using chemicals, but the method is increasingly losing effectiveness as resistant tick populations have established in the field conditions. Thus, to develop effective tick management strategies, monitoring of resistance in most predominant tick species, Rhipicephalus microplus was targeted. The ticks were collected from eleven districts of Madhya Pradesh and one district of Punjab and tested against deltamethrin (DLM), cypermethrin (CYP), coumaphos (CMP), ivermectin (IVM) and fipronil (FIP), through adult immersion and larval packet tests.

The role of ixodid ticks especially Rhipicephalus sanguineus and Heamaphysalis elliptica in the epidemiology of several diseases of veterinary and public health importance have been documented. This study conducted a systematic review focusing on the distribution of R. sanguineus and H. elliptica, as well as the common tick-borne pathogens they harbour. The Scopus, ScienceDirect, PubMed, and Web of Science databases were used to search for English journal articles published between January 1990 and June 2021. The articles were assessed by following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic

The aim of this work is to compare the sensitivity of two in vitro bioassays to detect resistant to fipronil in Argentinean populations of the cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus. Two different larval bioassays prepared with technical grade (97%) fipronil were compared: larval immersion test (LIT) and larval packet test (LPT). Seven strains from different provinces were treated with both assays. Colonia Tabay, Colonia Benítez, Intiyaco and Quimili strains were considered resistant in both LIT and LPT bioassays. The 95% confidence intervals (IC95) for lethal concentration 50% (LC50) did not ove
