Ring chromosome 7 is a rare but well documented chromosomal aberration in man. So far at least 14 cases have been reported in the literature showing a variable but distinct pattern of phenotypic characteristics in affected individuals. Besides others, skin findings as pigmented naevi are especially frequent. Loss of chromosomal material from the terminal chromosome arms in the structurally abnormal ring chromosome 7 as well as somatic mosaicism with loss or gain of chromosome 7 has been suggested to be responsible for the clinical symptoms. We now report another case of a ring chromosome 7 in

A small ring-shaped supernumerary marker chromosome (SMC) was detected in 50% of metaphase cells in an 18-month-old boy with mental retardation and multiple congenital anomalies. Conventional cytogenetic methods had failed to identify the origin of the marker. When the patient was age 11.5 years, we defined the origin of the SMC by fluorescence in situ hybridization using a battery of centromere-specific DNA probes. The marker was positive with the probe for locus D2Z. More detailed characterization was achieved by using chromosome 2 arm-specific and marker-specific DNA libraries, which were c

Ring 20 syndrome is a rare cause of refractory epilepsy and non-convulsive status epilepticus in children. We report a patient with Ring 20 syndrome with refractory focal seizures and non-convulsive status epilepticus who showed good treatment response with intravenous steroids. We wish to highlight that intravenous pulse methylprednisolone is a useful treatment strategy in this setting.

BACKGROUND: Ring chromosomes can be formed by terminal breaks of two arms of a chromosome and their rejoining, leading to a loss of genetic material. They may also be formed by telomere-telomere fusions with no deletion, resulting in the formation of a complete ring. Mosaic X-ring chromosomes are extremely rare and have highly variable phenotypes. Here, we report a case with a mosaic X-ring chromosome in a patient with Turner syndrome, and we illustrate the unreported complicated mechanism using chromosome analysis and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH).

Ring chromosome 13 is a rare genetic condition with an incidence of 1/58,000 in live births. Major clinical features of patients with ring chromosome 13 include growth and developmental retardation, microcephaly, facial dysmorphism, ambiguous genitalia, anal atresia, eye malformations, retinoblastoma, and hand, foot, and toe abnormalities. The severity of the phenotype depends on the amount of genetic material lost during ring chromosome formation. Here, we report 2 cases with ring chromosome 13 at either end of the phenotypic spectrum.

We present a male patient with constitutional ring 1 chromosome and subsequent 6 Mb deletion at 1q43q44. The patient displays overlapping clinical features with reported patients with ring 1 chromosome and 1q43q44 microdeletion syndrome. To our knowledge, this is the first patient with ring 1 chromosome characterized by comparative genomic hybridization.

We describe the case of a male newborn with ring chromosome 13 found to have dysmorphic features, growth retardation, imperforate anus, and ambiguous genitalia. An initial karyotype showed 46,XY,r(13)(p13q34) in the 30 cells analyzed. SNP microarray from peripheral blood revealed not only an 8.14-Mb 13q33.2q34 deletion, but also a duplication of 87.49 Mb suggesting partial trisomy 13q that the patient did not appear to have clinically. Further cytogenetic characterization detected 3 distinct cell lines in the repeated peripheral blood sample: 46,XY,r(13)(p13q34)[89]/ 46,XY,r(13;13)(p13q34)[7]/

Ring chromosome 14 syndrome is a rare genetic disorder. Typically, children with this syndrome have distinct facial features, development delay, microcephaly, seizures, ocular abnormalities, and recurrent respiratory infections. Epilepsy associated with ring chromosome 14 generally shows intractable seizures. We describe a six-month-old girl with ring chromosome 14 syndrome who presented with early-onset and drug-resistant seizures.

Ring chromosome 22 [r(22)], a rare cytogenetic finding, has been described in nearly 70 cases to date. Cytogenetic investigations were carried out on a 5-year-old male child with microcephaly and intellectual disability. Cytogenetic investigations revealed his karyotype to be 46,XY,r(22). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of an r(22) anomaly from India.

Hypomelanosis of Ito is an uncommon neuroectodermal disease associated with a wide range of cytogenetic abnormalities. Ring chromosome 20 is a rare chromosomal disorder characterized by severe, refractory epilepsy, cognitive delay, and unspecific dysmorphic traits. An association between the hypomelanosis of Ito and ring chromosome 20 syndrome was never reported peviously. We describe a young girl who has ring chromosome 20 and who also has clinical symptoms of hypomelanosis of Ito. After her diagnosis of epilepsy, she was submitted to neurologic and genetic testing, a skin biopsy, and repeate

Two unrelated girls presented with multiple disseminated, paired, small café-au-lait spots and hypopigmented macules, suggesting didymosis (twin spotting). The girls also had growth retardation, microcephaly, hypertelorism, triangular facies, and a 46,XY, r(15) karyotype. The term cutis tricolor parvimaculata has been proposed to describe a twin spot phenomenon characterized by small, paired hypochromic and hyperchromic macules on a background of normal intermediate-pigmented skin. It has been hypothesized that the underlying gene locus of this phenomenon is a hot spot for postzygotic recombin

We report four infants (two males, two females) with ring 14 chromosome presenting with early-onset partial epilepsy. The first seizure occurred between 3 and 6 months (3, 3, 4, and 6mo respectively). In all four cases, diagnosis was based on early focal seizures, rather than on psychomotor retardation or morphological features, which were not prominent at seizure onset. Moreover, despite the young age of the patients and the high frequency of seizures, neither epileptic spasms nor progression to 'epileptic encephalopathy', such as hypsarrhythmia, were observed. Epilepsy remained partial in th

PURPOSE: The only consistent symptom of ring chromosome 20 syndrome (r(20)) is severe, refractory epilepsy often associated with a characteristic, although not pathognomonic, EEG pattern. Patients suffer from severe seizures with accompanying cognitive decline and frequent episodes of non-convulsive status epilepticus (SE). Other features of this rare disorder, such as dysmorphic changes, mental retardation and behavioral disturbances are variable. Because of the variability of the clinical presentation, some patients with r(20) undergo invasive investigations before being diagnosed.

Ring chromosomes are rare chromosome disorders that arise usually de novo. Children with ring chromosome 6 have a wide range of intellectual functioning and congenital anomalies. We report an epileptic case of a 10-year-old boy to be mild psychomotor retardation and dysmorphic traits including microcephaly, brachycephaly, flat occiput, large and apparently low set ears, and bilateral syndactyly between his second and third fingers with mosaic ring chromosome 6 and 6q terminal deletion. Peripheral chromosome and fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH) analysis of the patient showed mos46,XY,r(

Major neurological disorders may accompany rare chromosomal abnormalities. As an example of this rare condition, we present a case with microcephaly, mental retardation, developmental delay, hyperactivity, stereotypic movements, seizures and dysmorphic facial appearance in whom a mosaic ring chromosome 18 was found [45,XX,-18/46,XX,r(18)/46,XX,dicr(18)]. Although ring chromosome 18 phenotype has been known for a long time, this is the third reported patient with a dicentric ring chromosome 18 mosaicism. The presented case will contribute to the identification of the genotype-phenotype correlat

The breakpoint junction on a ring chromosome 17 in a girl with autism, mental retardation, mild dysmorphism and neurofibromatosis was identified and analysed at the nucleotide level. The extent of the deleted segments was about 1.9 Mb on 17p and about 1.0 Mb on 17q. The structure of the junction between the 17p and 17q arms, especially the lack of significant homology between the juxtaposed genomic regions and the presence of short microhomology at the junction site, indicated non-homologous end joining as the most likely mechanism leading to the rearrangement. In addition to the 17p-17q junct
