How is work-family conflict linked to nurse-assessed patient safety among intensive care unit nurses? A serial multiple mediation analysis.

AIM: The aim of this study was to test whether rumination and negative affectivity mediate the relationship between work-family conflict and nurse-assessed patient safety among intensive care unit nurses. BACKGROUND: Most intensive care unit nurses experience work-family conflicts that jeopardise patient safety. Although prior studies have explored the effect of work-family conflict on patient safety, few have investigated whether work-family conflict is associated with patient safety through rumination and negative affectivity among intensive care unit nurses. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.

Beyond the ideal: Tensions and realities of social work in palliative care.

Interdisciplinary collaboration is a foundational principle of palliative care, yet social workers within these teams often encounter professional marginalization, role ambiguity, and systemic barriers to full integration. This study explores the experiences of palliative care social workers in Ontario, Canada, focusing on the tensions they navigate within interdisciplinary teams. Using an interpretive qualitative approach, in-depth interviews were conducted with 13 social workers practicing in hospital and community-based palliative care settings. Thematic analysis identified three interrelat

Discrepancies in mother and child perceptions of spina bifida medical responsibilities during the transition to adolescence: associations with family conflict and medical adherence.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated mother-child discrepancies over perceptions of who is responsible for spina bifida (SB) medical tasks in relation to family conflict and medical adherence. METHOD: 140 youth with SB and their mothers completed questionnaires regarding who is responsible for specific SB medical tasks, family conflict, and medical adherence. An observational measure was also used to assess family conflict. RESULTS: Although children viewed themselves as more responsible for medical management than mothers did, mother-child discrepancies were not associated with family conflic

Amygdaloid theta-band power increases during conflict processing in humans.

The amygdala is a medial temporal lobe structure known to be involved in processing emotional conflict. However, its role in processing non-emotional conflict is not well understood. Previous studies have utilized the Stroop Task to examine brain modulation of humans under the color-word conflict scenario, which is non-emotional conflict processing, and found hippocampal theta-band (4-7 Hz) modulation. This study aims to survey amygdaloid theta power changes during non-emotional conflict processing using intracranial depth electrodes in nine epileptic patients (3 female; age 20-62). All patien

Selective perturbation of cognitive conflict in the human brain-A combined fMRI and rTMS study.

We investigated if single and double conflicts are processed separately in different brain regions and if they are differentially vulnerable to TMS perturbation. Fifteen human volunteers performed a single (Flanker or Simon) conflict task or a double (Flanker and Simon) conflict task in a combined functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) study. The fMRI approach aimed at localizing brain regions involved in interference resolution induced by single Flanker (stimulus-stimulus, S-S) and Simon (stimulus-response, S-R) conflicts as well as regions in

United by conflict: Convergent signatures of parental conflict in angiosperms and placental mammals.

Endosperm in angiosperms and placenta in eutherians are convergent innovations for efficient embryonic nutrient transfer. Despite advantages, this reproductive strategy incurs metabolic costs that maternal parents disproportionately shoulder, leading to potential inter-parental conflict over optimal offspring investment. Genomic imprinting-parent-of-origin-biased gene expression-is fundamental for endosperm and placenta development and has convergently evolved in angiosperms and mammals, in part, to resolve parental conflict. Here, we review the mechanisms of genomic imprinting in these taxa.

Conflict at Work Impairs Physiological Recovery during Sleep: A Daily Diary Study.

Sleep plays an essential role in maintaining employees' health and well-being. However, stressors, such as conflict at work, may interfere with employees' sleep. Drawing on previous literature on the relationship between conflict at work and sleep outcomes, we proposed a negative relationship between daily conflict at work and physiological changes during early sleep, particularly nocturnal heart rate variability (HRV). Furthermore, building on the perseverative cognition hypothesis, we proposed that daily work-related rumination mediates the relationship between conflict at work and nocturnal

Career aspirations, job satisfaction and gender identity in female student nurses.

This study examines the gender-role orientation, gender-role conflict, job commitment and work motivation of female student nurses in the Republic of Ireland. Career aspirations, year of nurse training and geographical area of upbringing were examined as potential concomitants of these dependent measures. Subjects completed self-report measures of job involvement, work motivation, gender-role orientation and gender-role conflict. Results obtained showed that aspiring towards a traditionally female career area of nursing was associated with higher levels of work motivation and lower levels of g

Anti-predation behavior resolves sexual conflict over mating rate and duration in a protandric-simultaneous hermaphrodite.

The reproductive interests of males and females rarely coincide, and thus, sexual conflict should be widespread in sexual species and favor the evolution of traits that bias the outcome of mating interactions towards the participant's own interests. Sexual conflict theory has achieved considerable sophistication since its formal proposal. Yet, the evolutionary implications of this process in species other than those with separate sexes remain ill-explored. I examined sexual conflict in Lysmata wurdemanni, a shrimp that exhibits protandric simultaneous hermaphroditism, a peculiar sexual system

Intellectual humility is reliably associated with constructive responses to conflict.

Conflict is a ubiquitous, but potentially destructive, feature of social life. In the current research, we argue that intellectual humility-the awareness of one's intellectual fallibility-plays an important role in promoting constructive responses and decreasing destructive responses to conflict in different contexts. In Study 1, we examine the role of intellectual humility in interpersonal conflicts with friends and family members. In Study 2, we extend this finding to workplace conflicts. In both studies we find that intellectual humility predicts more constructive and less destructive respo

It Takes Two to Tango: The Interplay of Partners' Communicated Perspective-Taking, Positive Relational Experience During Conflict and Relationship Satisfaction in Young Adult Couples.

Research has yet to clarify the relational mechanisms through which communicated perspective-taking (CPT) during conflict relates to overall relationship satisfaction, and prior studies have largely overlooked its dynamic and interactive nature, often examining partners' contributions separately. To address these gaps, this study employed an observational dyadic design to examine, in a sample of 178 young adult couples, the unique and joint contributions of partners' CPT during conflict to their relationship satisfaction, as well as the role of positive relational experience during conflict in

The impact of role stress on workers' behaviour through job satisfaction and organizational commitment.

Dysfunctions in role performance have been associated with a large number of consequences, almost always negative, which affect the well-being of workers and the functioning of organizations. An individual's experience of receiving incompatible or conflicting requests (role conflict) and/or the lack of enough information to carry out his/her job (role ambiguity) are causes of role stress. According to previous theory, role ambiguity and conflict decrease workers' performance and are positively related to the probability of workers leaving the organization. Job satisfaction refers to a positive

Unconscious Conflict Adaptation of Heroin Abstainers.

Conflict adaptation is representative of the dynamic cognitive control process, which reflects the adaptability and flexibility of personal cognitive processing. Cognitive control plays an important role in drug use and relapse in addicts. Previous studies have identified conscious conflict adaptation in drug addicts. The present study examined unconscious conflict adaptation in persons with heroin use disorder using an arrow version meta-contrast masking task. The results found that persons with heroin use disorder had smaller unconscious conflict adaptation compared to the healthy control gr

Predictors of parenting behavior trajectories among families of young adolescents with and without spina bifida.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the utility of familial and parental variables in predicting trajectories of parenting behaviors among families of young adolescents with and without spina bifida (SB). METHOD: Sixty-eight families with a child with SB and a demographically matched comparison group (CG) of 68 families of an able-bodied child participated. Observational and questionnaire assessments of parenting behavior were collected via home visits at three time points, as were reports of parent and family functioning. RESULTS: Family conflict was negatively associated with adaptive parenting behavio

A Whole Other Story: Inclusive Victimhood Narratives Reduce Competitive Victimhood and Intergroup Hostility.

Conflict narratives, having at their core the belief that the ingroup suffered more than the outgroup (competitive victimhood), are key in maintaining conflicts. Three experiments conducted with Jewish Israelis (Study 1), Turkish Kurds (Study 2), and Americans (Study 3) tested whether conflict narratives can reduce conflict. Studies 1 and 3 showed that people respond to inclusive victimhood narratives that emphasize both ingroup and outgroup suffering with a reduction in competitive victimhood and, in turn, reduced support for aggressive policies-but only when people were relatively less conce

The prelimbic cortex arbitrates memory-guided conflict resolution.

Balancing reward and avoidance to produce adaptive behavior is a critical aspect of conflict resolution. Here, we investigated how mice balance reward-seeking and avoidance during memory-guided conflict resolution. Mice were trained to integrate the drives to approach a reward and to avoid a foot shock without compromising either goal. During training, mice learn that a light cue signals the availability of a reward and that an auditory cue signals the onset of a foot shock, which they can avoid by stepping onto a platform. During testing, the light and auditory cues are delivered simultaneous
