Thelazia callipaeda is a zoonotic spirurid nematode infecting the conjunctival sac of various mammalian hosts, including carnivores and humans. Although initially restricted to Asia, the parasite has expanded across Europe over the past two decades, with reports of infection in domestic and wild hosts as well as humans. In Romania, T. callipaeda has been documented in several wild carnivore species and lagomorphs, but not yet in brown bears (Ursus arctos), despite housing the largest European bear population. Between 2021 and 2025, the eyes of 25 brown bears legally hunted in different regions

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis is a vector-borne zoonotic disease caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania. While it is endemic in the Mediterranean Basin and the Balkans, Romania remains a non-endemic country. However, climate change, increased international travel, and the documented presence of competent vectors (Phlebotomus spp.) have raised concerns about the potential emergence of autochthonous cases.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report two cases of imported cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) diagnosed in central Romania, a region without previously confirmed human or animal cases. The first case invol

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the most globally impactful infectious diseases, with a recorded mortality of 1.6 million in 2022. In Romania and Ukraine, two high burden countries in the context of the WHO European region, treatment is geared towards cure; however, this path is paved with significant challenges, from morbidity to loss to follow-up.
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed for drug-susceptible TB patients hospitalised in three TB expertise centres in Romania and Ukraine using routinely collected data. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a neglected parasitic disease caused by the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus. The aim of this study was to assess the epidemiological features of human cystic echinococcosis in patients from Western Romania. We retrospectively investigated the medical records of patients hospitalized with CE between 1 January 2007 and 1 September 2022. A total of 366 patients (range 18-90 years) were recorded. The number of hospitalized individuals was higher in patients aged 50-59 years (83/366, 22.7%), in females (194/366, 53%), and in residents of rural areas (225/366, 61.5%).

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: One of the most severe forms of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) is tuberculous meningitis (TBM), which is linked to significant morbidity and high mortality. It is well recognized that human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive people are more likely to develop EPTB, including TBM, especially if they have severe immunodeficiencies. We aim to highlight the profile and the characteristics of TBM in HIV-infected patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective clinical study based on hospital medical records of patients diagnosed with HIV/AIDS (acquired

Background and Objectives: The extent of SARS-CoV-2 infection among a population may be assessed by the presence of serum SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, which indicates previous exposure. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the adult population from Western Romania. Materials and Methods: Samples of 2443 consecutive individuals, referred for routine laboratory investigations, were tested for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies using the Elecsys immunoassay that targets the nucleocapsid protein, for identifying the presence of the total antibodies against SARS-CoV-2.

OBJECTIVES: In this study we have investigated the in vitro and in vivo virulence characteristics of a new T6SS positive Campylobacter jejuni chicken isolate (SV12) originating from a poultry population in North Romania. A detailed phenotypic characterization was performed and compared to the T6SS negative C. jejuni 81-176 wild strain.
RESULTS: Our results indicate that the significantly higher capacity to attach and invade HCT-8 cells of C. jejuni SV12 isolate is associated with increased motility, increased resistance to bile salts and serum resistance, when compared to C. jejuni strain 81-

Despite global improvement in annual measles incidence and mortality since 2000, progress toward elimination goals has slowed. The World Health Organization (WHO) European Region (EUR) established a regional goal for measles and rubella elimination by 2015. Romania is one of 13 EUR countries in which measles remains endemic. To identify barriers to meeting programmatic targets and to aid in prioritizing efforts to strengthen measles elimination strategy implementation, the WHO and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention developed a measles programmatic risk assessment tool that uses ro

The dramatic rise of the Romanian birth rate in 1967 following the restrictive abortion decree of late 1966 is well known. Less well known are significant changes in key maternal and child health indicators in the period after 1966. Possible reasons for these changes are discussed as are the implications of the Romanian experience for population policy and abortion research in the United States.

Rabies is a fatal zoonotic disease once clinical symptoms develop. In Europe, sustained animal rabies control programs have led to a marked decline in animal rabies and subsequently human rabies cases; however, sporadic infections continue to occur. In July 2025, a fatal case of autochthonous (locally acquired) human rabies was confirmed in Romania following a stray dog bite in a patient who did not receive post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). Here, we report the first molecular characterization of a human rabies virus (RABV) strain isolated in Romania and place it in the context of contemporaneou

Background and Objectives. Mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) or vertical transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is largely preventable in settings where prevention of MTCT (PVT) strategies are consistently implemented. Romania represents a particular epidemiological context, as individuals from the historical pediatric HIV cohort have now reached reproductive age. This study assessed current PVT outcomes in northeastern Romania and explored the remaining circumstances in which transmission still occurs. Materials and Methods. We performed a retrospective observational analysis at

Streptococcus intermedius is a Gram-positive coccus usually found in the normal digestive or respiratory flora of humans and in some animal species, including rabbits. In conditions of immunosuppression, it can cause serious infections that can be difficult to treat or can even lead to death if not treated properly. S. intermedius-induced infections must be taken seriously, and proper treatment needs to be provided as soon as the patient is diagnosed, because otherwise, these infections can evolve in such a dramatic way as to result in the death of the patient. This study reports the case of a

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a rare fatal genetic disorder with a tight correlation between the genotype and the phenotype of the patients. However, the relationship between genotype and phenotype is yet incompletely understood, with some cases manifesting a different phenotype than predicted from their genotype. Since the genetic diagnosis is often targeted to specific gene sections, and the genotype-phenotype correlations guide early treatment decisions, accumulating clinical and epidemiological data for these rare disorders is required to refine local management strategies.
