OBJECTIVES: New kinetic approaches that exploit differential water absorption appear to be more effective for assessing lesion activity on root surfaces using short wavelength infrared (SWIR) imaging. The aim of this pilot study was to employ multispectral time-resolved SWIR imaging to assess the activity of root caries.
METHODS: A SWIR imaging array and SWIR light sources at 1040 and 1470 nm were used to assess the activity of ten arrested and ten active root caries lesions on extracted teeth during forced air drying for 60 s. Cross-polarization optical coherence tomography (CP-OCT) was used

BACKGROUND: Root surface caries, which frequently occur due to ageing and periodontal procedures, often require minimally invasive approaches, especially in molar teeth where access is limited. This study aimed to analyse the remineralisation effects and biocompatibility of experimental bioactive glass-containing materials modified through various boron concentrations on root surface caries.
METHODS: For the synthesis of the experimental bioactive glass, a rapid alkali-mediated sol-gel was applied. H₃BO₃ was included in the composition for boron modification. Forty caries-free human molar tee

The authors present a case concerning an adult male patient who developed multiple sites of root caries adjacent to the area where he habitually held a sugar-free nicotine lozenge that contained mannitol and maltodextrin. The root caries occurred despite the patient's excellent oral hygiene, exemplary dietary habits, and clinically normal salivary flow. Between 1999 and 2008, he had only required two restorations to repair carious lesions. This patient had a 20+-year habit of using smokeless tobacco before switching to a cessation aid nicotine lozenge in May of 2008. A full-mouth series of rad

BACKGROUND: The potential of an improved understanding to prevent and treat a complex oral condition such as root caries is important, given its correlation with multiple factors and the uncertainty surrounding the approach/material of choice. Deeper insights into risk factors may improve the quality of treatment and reduce the formation of root surface caries.
AIM: The present work aims to gain knowledge about dentists' opinions and experiences on assessing the risk factor related to the development of root caries and to help identify any overlooked factors that may contribute to less effica

This study aimed to assess the impact of moisture control on the risk of caries progression to root restorations (CAR) made of resin composite (RC) or glass ionomer cements (GIC) under conditions of absolute or inadequate moisture control in an in vitro model. In each of the sixty caries-free human maxillary premolars, standardized mesial and distal cavities were prepared 5 mm apical to the cemento-enamel junction. The specimens were randomly allocated to the experimental groups RC-Z250 (Scotchbond Universal SE & Z250, 3M, Seefeld, Germany), GIC-DF (DeltaFil, DMG, Hamburg, Germany), GIC-EF (Eq

BACKGROUND: Dental caries remains one of the most common chronic diseases affecting older adults worldwide. As edentulism decreases and more natural teeth are retained into old age, the number of susceptible tooth surfaces increases. Age-related factors such as polypharmacy, cognitive decline, and reduced oral hygiene skills, together with systemic and social factors, increase the risk of caries. Although the literature is extensive, the evidence for diagnosis and management remains fragmented and lacking clinical integration.
OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to assess and map current evi

Lesion formation on root surfaces of human posterior teeth was studied in acetate/lactate buffers with a background electrolyte composition based on plaque fluid analyses. Lesion depth after 28 days at 37 degrees C was measured in relation to: the presence or absence of cementum; the concentration of undissociated buffer; the presence or absence of magnesium ions at plaque fluid concentration. Each factor was evaluated at several values of -log(ion activity product for hydroxyapatite): pI(HA). Solutions were formulated to minimize variation in pH, which varied by < or =0.03 for a given compari

Tooth root caries account for 10.1% of all dental caries in the USA. This study developed a multifunctional resin coating with calcium (Ca) and phosphate (P) ion release and antibacterial properties to combat root caries. The effects of nano-sized amorphous calcium phosphate (NACP) and dimethylaminohexadecyl methacrylate (DMAHDM) on mechanical, physical, and antibacterial properties against Streptococcus mutans, and cytotoxicity on dental pulp stem cells and gingival fibroblasts were evaluated. A coating resin combining urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA), triethylene glycol divinylbenzyl ether (TE

BACKGROUND: Root caries are prevalent issues that affect dental health, particularly among elderly individuals with exposed root surfaces. Fluoride therapy has shown effectiveness in preventing root caries, but limited studies have addressed its cost-effectiveness in elderly persons population. This study aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of a fluoride treatment program for preventing root caries in elderly persons within the context of Chinese public healthcare.
METHODS: A Markov simulation model was adopted for the cost-effectiveness analysis in a hypothetical scenario from a healthc

PURPOSE: Impacted third molars (M3s) may lead to external root resorption (ERR) and dental caries (DC) in the adjacent second molars (M2s). The aim of this study was to identify the risk factors for ERR and DC in M2s associated with impacted M3s.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We implemented a cross-sectional study and enrolled a sample composed of patients with M3s and M2s present and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans available for review. If there was contact between the M2 and the adjacent M3 and the border of radiolucency was more distinct, the case was considered ERR. Apart from that, t

The prevalence of caries on exposed root surfaces in 88-year-old subjects with and without salivary levels of Streptococcus sobrinus was studied. Ninety-two individuals were examined with regard to root caries lesions and fillings. The root caries index (RCI) was calculated and related to salivary flow rate and buffer capacity, plaque score and salivary counts of Streptococcus mutans, S. sobrinus and lactobacilli. In 89 subjects with exposed root surfaces, all but 2 harbored mutans streptococci; 51 subjects carried S. mutans only, 35 both S. sobrinus and S. mutans, and 1 S. sobrinus only. The
