External cervical resorption (ECR) is a dynamic pathological process characterized by its cervical position on the root and arises below the epithelial attachment and the coronal part of the bone. This report will highlight a case of ECR in an asymptomatic patient. A radiolucent area was noted during a routine dental follow-up examination on the bitewings at the mesial surface of the upper right second premolar. Persistently, the radiolucency had multiple radiographic views indicating a true form of a lesion that could be diagnosed as external cervical resorption. The patient did not report an

The current literature on multiple idiopathic cervical root resorption (MICRR), a rare and aggressive form of external root resorption, is limited to case reports and series. Therefore, we performed a systematic review of this condition. A comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, Web of science, Cochrane Library, CNKI, and WANFANG was conducted using key terms relevant to MICRR, supplemented by a grey literature search. Risk of bias was assessed using Cochrane's and Joanna Briggs Institute's tools. A total of 36 studies with 47 cases were included. MICRR is more common among younger females and

Lateral luxation is defined as a traumatic displacement of a tooth in any direction other than axially. A laterally luxated tooth is often immobile because of its bony lock. It produces a high metallic sound during percussion. Pulp sensibility testing is likely to be negative during the initial follow-up. However, the tooth should be monitored until a definitive pulp diagnosis is made. Treatment includes local anesthesia, suturing soft tissue injuries, manual repositioning of the luxated tooth, and stabilization with a flexible splint for 4 weeks. Given the risk of pulp necrosis following late

This case report presents the management of a case of rarely seen perforating internal replacement resorption using calcium hydroxide (CH) medication and mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) root canal obturation. A maxillary central incisor of a 20-year-old female was showing a sinus track on the mucosa. Radiographically, an irregularly shaped and perforating internal resorption area was seen at the middle third of the root canal. Appearances of the bone-like fuzzy material were observed inside the resorption site. The apical part of the canal was obliterated. Following 3 months of CH medication,

INTRODUCTION: Ankylosis and disrupted or altered root development are frequent complications associated with intrusive luxation and tooth avulsion lesions. Various forms of treatment have been described according to the severity of the trauma and root development. The literature shows that decoronation is an ideal treatment in cases where replacement resorption occurs.
METHODS: Two clinical cases are presented: involving intrusive luxation [15-year-old female patient with an affected maxillary left lateral incisor (2.2)] and a replanted avulsed tooth [8-year-old male patient with avulsion of

AIM: To report a severe and rare case of multiple idiopathic cervical root resorption (MICRR) in an adult female.
SUMMARY: A healthy 27-year-old Chinese female, with no significant associated factors, presented with MICRR. Resorption progressed quickly and lesions varied in severity, involving 29 teeth and leading to the loss of 23 teeth over a period of only 3 years. The inner surface of the crown showed extensive areas with worm-eaten lacunar resorption, and the resorptive lesions had abundant lysosomes throughout their cytoplasm. Further, heavy deposits of reaction products were shown in v

In orthodontic tooth movement (OTM), we should be concerned about external root resorption (ERR) as an undesirable iatrogenic problem, but its mechanisms are not fully understood. Since our previous epidemiologic studies found that patients with allergic diseases showed higher rates of ERR during orthodontic treatment, we explored the possible effect of allergic sensitization on ERR. In ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized Brown-Norway rats, the amounts of ERR and OTM were greater than those in animals subjected to orthodontic force alone. The expression levels of RANKL and pro-inflammatory cytokines we

The aim of this case report was to present a case of multiple idiopathic apical root resorption which is a rare condition in a 17-year-old adult male. External root resorption of the permanent teeth is a multifactorial process. Well-recognized causes of apical root resorption in permanent teeth include orthodontic therapy, trauma, periapical or periodontal inflammation, tumors, cysts, occlusal stress, impacted teeth, systemic conditions, endocrine imbalances and dietary habits. When none of these causes are present, it is termed idiopathic root resorption which may be either cervical or apical

External apical root resorption is an iatrogenic consequence of orthodontic treatment, although it may also occur in the absence of orthodontic treatment. Root resorption causes root shortening and breaks the integrity of teeth arch and this is very important for successful orthodontic treatment. Orthodontics is probably the only dental specialty that actually uses the inflammatory process as a means of solving functional and aesthetic problems. They should know the risk factors of root resorption and do everything to reduce the occurrence of root resorption. The aim of our review is to find,

The etiology of internal root resorption is not fully understandable, trauma and chronic pulpitis are considered the main risk factors. Usually the process is asymptomatic and diagnosed upon routine radiographic examination. This case report presents a rapid progression of internal resorption related directly to traumatic injury. A 16-year-old female arrived at the emergency room after a mild extrusion of the mandibular incisors. The initial treatment included repositioning and splinting of the teeth. Radiographs performed at repositioning and splinting demonstrated normal configuration of the

Root resorption is an undesirable sequela of orthodontic tooth movement. The odontoclasts are responsible for root resorption and the process of hyalinization is known to preceed the orthodontic root resorption. It is found that there are several predisposing factors, therefore an evaluation of these factors should be done by careful examination of personal medical history, severity of malocclusion and dental treatment (if any due to previous history of trauma), anterior crossbite etc. The evaluation becomes an essential factor as it helps the orthodontists in detecting the occurance and sever

BACKGROUND: Root resorption is a multifactorial process that results in loss of tooth structure. The causes of root resorption may vary, leading to several types of resorptions. Some factors have been identified and may be categorized into physiological resorption, local factors, systemic conditions, and idiopathic resorptions. The objective of this report was to present a case of a 17-year-old white female with progressive, generalized, apical idiopathic root resorption followed up for 34 months.
METHODS: Two panoramic radiographs, 14 and 34 months after initial clinical and radiological exa

BACKGROUND: It has been previously observed that teeth with severe chronic periodontitis experience more transient external root resorptions than teeth with less severe disease.
METHODS: Sixty-six teeth diagnosed with different levels of chronic periodontitis in 48 patients were observed with a light microscope. Main characteristics of teeth with root resorptions, as well as percentages of area and volume resorbed on each radicular third of the teeth, were determined.
RESULTS: Over 80% (53) of the teeth exhibited resorption: 46.67% in group 1 (slight periodontitis); 85% in group 2 (moderate

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND AND DESCRIPTION OF CASE: The etiology and pathogenesis of generalized cervical root resorptions is not well understood. In the present report, a case of severe cervical root resorption involving 24 anterior and posterior teeth is presented. The lesions developed within a period of 2 years after the patient had changed to an acid-enriched diet. They extended far into the coronal dentin and were associated with gingival inflammation and crestal bone resorption. However, no generalized clinical attachment loss had occurred. Culturing of subgingival plaque revealed the prese

The aim of this study was to compare the effects on root resorption of continuous and discontinuous force application. The experimental material consisted of 22 first premolars that were to be extracted as part of orthodontic treatment. Prior to extraction, a 100 g tipping force was applied to the experimental teeth by means of elastics. One side was randomly selected to be the continuous force side, and the contralateral side became the discontinuous force side. Elastics were worn 24 hours per day on the continuous force side and 12 hours per day on the discontinuous side. The experimental pr

OBJECTIVES: To assess the in vitro and in vivo accuracy of a mathematical computer-based reconstruction of two images that are not taken with the same recording geometry for the measurement of apical root resorption following orthodontic treatment.
METHODS: A gold standard for root resorption in vitro was developed from 10 extracted upper central incisors using calipers. Radiographs made with five different projection angles were reconstructed mathematically by two observers. The calculated loss of length was compared with the gold standard. Eighty-two upper central incisors from 61 patients

Two replanted and subsequently expelled upper central incisors were observed under a scanning electron microscope to study the changes brought about by root resorption. The severity of resorption and the distribution of the affected areas were different in the two specimens. In the first case, large, deep excavations were found along a continuous bone defect which exposed the opposite root canal wall. Bacteria-like elements were found on the bottom of the eroded areas both on the outer and on the inner root surfaces. In the second case, resorption denuded the apical portion of the metal post.

The aim of this investigation was to study the reparative potential of orthodontically induced root resorption. Sixty-four maxillary right and left first premolars in 32 patients (15 boys and 17 girls, mean age 13.7 years) were moved buccally with fixed orthodontic appliances and a continuous force of 50 cN (approximately 50 g), activated weekly for 6 weeks. The patients were divided into 4 groups of 8. Retention periods varied from 1 week to 8 weeks. Histological preparations showed that root resorption affected all the test teeth. The percentage of resorptive areas that had begun to repair r

Root-resorption of first permanent molars by impacted premolars is generally considered to be rare, although a few cases have been reported. A case is presented, of bilateral root-resorption of upper first permanent molars by unerupted second premolars, and a number of clinical conclusions are discussed.
