Rotavirus gastroenteritis in infants and young children.

The electronmicroscopic examination of stool samples from 18 infants and young children with gastroenteritis, hospitalized at the Clinic of Infectious Diseases in Prague, was carried out. In ten children rotavirus was found in the faeces and the bacteriological findings were negative. Rotavirus particles were aggregated by convalescent child sera and by normal human gamma globulin. The clinical picture was characterized by the sudden onset of vomiting and fever, in one case with febrile convulsions. Diarrhoea was watery and yellow-green, and usually persisted for four to five days. The conditi

Isolation of rotavirus from foals with diarrhoea.

A rotavirus, morphologically similar to other known rotaviruses, was demonstrated in the faeces of 5 foals with diarrhoea on two properties. Four of these 5 samples produced specific intracytoplasmic fluorescence in cell culture when reacted with calf rotavirus antiserum conjugate. Sixteen affected foals from both properties were depressed, did not suckle and became recumbent. Most had a watery diarrhoea which lasted for 3 days and resulted in some dehydration and loss of body condition. Sick foals were separated from their mothers following the onset of diarrhoea and given fluid therapy and a

Protection against live rotavirus challenge in mice induced by parenteral and mucosal delivery of VP6 subunit rotavirus vaccine.

Live oral rotavirus (RV) vaccines are part of routine childhood immunization but are associated with adverse effects, particularly intussusception. We have developed a non-live combined RV - norovirus (NoV) vaccine candidate consisting of human RV inner-capsid rVP6 protein and NoV virus-like particles. To determine the effect of delivery route on induction of VP6-specific protective immunity, BALB/c mice were administered a vaccine containing RV rVP6 intramuscularly, intranasally or a combination of both, and challenged with murine RV. At least 65 % protection against RV shedding was observed

[Molecular characterization of a rare rotavirus (Sedoreoviridae: Rotavirus) strain genotype G2P[9] isolated from a child with acute gastroenteritis].

INTRODUCTION: Rotaviruses exhibit a high degree of variability, which is ensured by the process of reassortment and antigenic drift. This leads to significant genetic diversity, including the emergence of strains with rare and unusual genotypes. This study, for the first time, provides a molecular genetic characterization of a rare RVA strain with the genotype G2P[9] based on all genome segments. AIM OF THE STUDY: To conduct a molecular genetic characterization of a rare strain of RVA genotype G2P[9] based on all genome segments, as well as to compare the strain with previously characterized

Rotavirus-NSP5 interacts with and hijacks host ATP citrate lyase to viroplasms, enhancing lipid biosynthesis for facilitating rotavirus infection.

Rotavirus (RV) replication occurs within viroplasms (VMs) and is initiated by two RV non-structural proteins NSP2 and NSP5. Viruses exploit host cellular components for their replication and assembly; however, information on the roles of host proteins in VM dynamics and RV replication is limited. Thus, in the current study, we used proteomics to identify host proteins that interact with NSP5 during RV infection to delineate their role in virus replication. A large number of host proteins (n = 128) were found to interact with NSP5, and Gene Ontology enrichment analysis revealed the enrichment o

Rotavirus Genotypes in Hospitalized Children With Acute Gastroenteritis Before and After Rotavirus Vaccine Introduction in Blantyre, Malawi, 1997-2019.

BACKGROUND: Rotavirus vaccine (Rotarix [RV1]) has reduced diarrhea-associated hospitalizations and deaths in Malawi. We examined the trends in circulating rotavirus genotypes in Malawi over a 22-year period to assess the impact of RV1 introduction on strain distribution. METHODS: Data on rotavirus-positive stool specimens among children aged <5 years hospitalized with diarrhea in Blantyre, Malawi before (July 1997-October 2012, n = 1765) and after (November 2012-October 2019, n = 934) RV1 introduction were analyzed. Rotavirus G and P genotypes were assigned using reverse-transcription polymer

Detection of rotavirus species A, B and C in domestic mammalian animals with diarrhoea and genotyping of bovine species A rotavirus strains.

Rotaviruses (RVs) are a major cause of neonatal diarrhoea in humans and animals worldwide. In this study, 425 faecal samples were collected between 1999 and 2013 from diarrhoeic livestock and companion animals at different locations in Germany and tested for RVs. A previously published real-time RT-PCR assay was optimized for detection of a larger variety of RV species A (RVA) strains, and real-time RT-PCR assays for detection of RV species B (RVB) and C (RVC) were newly developed. The detection limits of the assays were 1.54×10(2), 3.95×10(2) and 3.60×10(3) genome copies for RVA, RVB and RVC,

Australian Rotavirus Surveillance Program: Annual Report, 2025.

This report from the Australian Rotavirus Surveillance Program (ARSP) describes the circulating rotavirus genotypes identified in children and adults during the period 1 January to 31 December 2025. In 2025, the ARSP saw a continuation of a high burden of rotavirus disease in the Australian population. During this period, 2,419 faecal specimens were referred to the National Rotavirus Reference Centre (NRRC) for rotavirus G- and P-genotype analysis; of these samples, 2,288 were confirmed as rotavirus positive. This represents the highest number of referred samples and the highest number of posi

Neurodevelopmental Outcomes of Neonatal Rotavirus-Associated Leukoencephalopathy.

Rotavirus infection has been reported to be associated with neonatal seizures with a diffuse and symmetrical diffusion restriction of periventricular white matter, namely, neonatal rotavirus-associated leukoencephalopathy. The extensive white matter injury seen in this cohort raises concerns about the long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes. In the present study, we prospectively assessed the neurodevelopmental outcomes of 13 patients with neonatal rotavirus-associated leukoencephalopathy at a median age of 26 months (range, 23-68 months). Neurodevelopmental outcomes were evaluated using a neuro

Approaches to monitoring intussusception following rotavirus vaccination.

INTRODUCTION: In 1998, the first licensed rotavirus vaccine was associated with intussusception, an unexpected adverse event, following reports of this condition to an adverse event reporting system. This rotavirus vaccine was withdrawn from the market and newer rotavirus vaccines have been extensively evaluated for an association with intussusception. AREAS COVERED: We review the different study designs that have been used both pre- and post-licensure to evaluate the association of rotavirus vaccines with intussusception and discuss the pros and cons of each design. Each of these study desig

[Research progress in rotavirus VP4 subunit vaccine].

Rotaviruses are leading causes of worldwide acute diarrhea in children younger than 5 years old, with severe consequence of social and economic burden. Vaccination is the most effective way to control rotavirus infection, however, the licensed rotavirus vaccines are ineffective in some low-income countries of Africa and Asia, where the mortality caused by rotavirus is higher than other areas. In addition, there are also safety concerns such as increased risk of intussusception. Therefore, it is urgent to improve the efficiency and safety of rotavirus vaccine to reduce the morbidity and mortali

[Vaccination against chickenpox, shingles and rotavirus-infection].

The Dutch National Immunisation Programme (NIP) has been very successful over the past 50 years. In future, this programme shall not include all new vaccines. Such vaccines can, however, be individually administered. At present there are 3 vaccines available in the Netherlands that have not been included in the NIP to date: against varicella (chickenpox), herpes zoster (shingles) and rotavirus infections. These vaccines are safe and effective. Chickenpox is not always a harmless childhood disease. A chickenpox vaccine is now available as well as a combined vaccine against mumps, measles, rubel

[Viraemia and extraintestinal involvement after rotavirus infection].

OBJECTIVE: To study the incidence of viraemia and extraintestinal organ damage in children with acute rotavirus (RV) gastroenteritis. METHODS: Eighty-three children with acute rotavirus gastroenteritis were hospitalized from October 2002 to March 2003, whose blood and fecal samples were obtained on admission. Rotavirus RNA (encoding the VP7 outer capsid protein) were detected in blood and fecal samples by nest reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). According to the result of blood RV-RNA, the patients were divided into RV-RNA positive group and RV-RNA negative group. The di

Rotavirus vaccine: current status and future prospects.

Rotavirus is the most important cause of severe gastroenteritis in infants and children worldwide. Efforts to develop a vaccine have concentrated on live oral vaccines, especially with attenuated animal viruses. Because studies with rhesus monkey rotavirus and bovine rotavirus RIT 4237 or WC3 were inconsistent, reassortant rhesus and bovine vaccines have been developed that include the gene encoding the neutralising protein, VP7, of several human strains. These efforts culminated in the licensure of a tetravalent rhesus rotavirus vaccine, in 1998. Subsequent reports linking vaccination to intu

[Rotavirus infection associated with adult thrombotic microangiopathy].

BACKGROUND: A preceding viral syndrome is classically cited as a triggering factor for thrombotic microangiopathy although only anecdotal reports of the causal agent have been documented. CASE REPORT: An 84-year-old woman developed thrombotic microangiopathy secondary to diarrhea. An exhaustive etiological work-up documented the presence of Rotavirus alone in the fecal matter. The clinical course was favorable after 9 plasma exchanges using frozen fresh plasma and was associated with disappearance of the Rotavirus. DISCUSSION: Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli is the most commonly identifie
