Bioassay-Guided Isolation of Iridoid Glucosides from Stenaria nigricans, Their Biting Deterrence against Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae), and Repellency Assessment against Imported Fire Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

In our natural product screening program, we screened natural products for their repellency and toxicity against insect vectors. Methanolic extract of aerial parts of Stenaria nigricans (Lam.), with no published chemistry, was tested for repellency against mosquitoes and imported hybrid fire ants. Methanolic extracts showed biting deterrence similar to DEET (N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide) against Aedes aegypti L. Based on this activity, the crude extract was fractionated into chloroform, ethyl acetate, and methanol subfractions. The active methanolic subfraction was further fractionated into 1

Cardioprotective role of A-cycloglycosylated derivative of Rubiadin in diabetic cardiomyopathy in rats.

Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a kind of idiopathic heart disease, which is one of the main complications of diabetes and seriously threatens the life of diabetic patients. Rubiadin, an anthraquinone compound extracted from the stems and roots of rubiaceae, has been widely discussed for its anti-diabetes, anti-oxidation and other pharmacological effects. However, Rubiadin can cause drug-induced liver injury. Therefore, A-cycloglycosylated derivative of Rubiadin (ACDR) was obtained by modifying its structure. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of ACDR on DCM cardiac injur

Hirsutine mitigates high glucose-induced cell injury via autophagy activation and NRF2/GPX4-mediated ferroptosis inhibition.

Hirsutine, a potent indole alkaloid extracted from Uncaria rhynchophylla (Miq.) Miq. ex Havil., family Rubiaceae., exhibits antioxidant and cytoprotective activities. However, its potential role in diabetic nephropathy (DN) remains unclear. DN is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease, and podocyte injury is a key event in the progression of DN. MPC5 cells were exposed to 30 mM HG with or without hirsutine (5-20 μM). Hirsutine significantly improved cell viability. Hirsutine significantly improved cell viability, accompanied by a marked reduction in intracellular ROS levels and apoptosis

Uncaria tomentosa extract exerts antimicrobial activity against boar seminal bacteria and influences sperm resilience under different conditions.

Uncaria tomentosa (UT) or cat's claw, is a vine belonging to the Rubiaceae family and native to South and Central America. Various parts of the plant, including bark, showed many therapeutic activities (e.g., antioxidant and antibacterial), but the in vitro effects on gametes have still not been investigated. During boar semen storage for artificial insemination purposes, oxidative stress and bacterial contamination negatively affect sperm quality. In this study, we evaluated the tolerance of boar sperm to UT ethanolic extract at four concentrations (1.6 to 0.025 μg/mL). The analyses were carr

Natural enemies of the maize cob borer, Mussidia nigrivenella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) in Benin, West Africa.

Mussidia nigrivenella Ragonot is a pest of maize cobs in West Africa. It significantly reduces maize yields and grain quality, with quantitative losses of 2-25%at harvest, and up to 10-15% indirect losses due to an increase in storage pest infestation levels. Infestation by M. nigrivenella also significantly increased the susceptibility of maize to Aspergillus flavus infection and subsequent aflatoxin contamination. Surveys conducted in different agro-ecological zones of Benin on cultivated and wild host plants during 1994-1997 revealed one egg parasitoid, three larval parasitoids and one pupa

Anthelminthic properties of Methylene chloride-methanol (1:1) extracts of two Cameroonians medicinal plants on Heligmosomoides bakeri (Nematoda: Heligmosomatidea).

BACKGROUND: The resistance of some medico-veterinary parasite strains as well as the unavailability and toxicity of synthetic anthelminthics on humans, animals and the impacts of their residues in the environment have pushed scientists to turn to plants with anthelminthic properties. Hence, the aim of this work was to contribute to the fight against helminths of medical and veterinary importance in general, and also to clear the environment of their free living stages. METHODS: Fresh eggs of Heligmosomoides bakeri were obtained from the faeces of experimentally infected mice. L1 and L2 larval

Cariogenic actinomyces identified with a beta-glucosidase-dependent green color reaction to Gardenia jasminoides extract.

The oral bacteria Actinomyces naeslundii and Actinomyces viscosus are known to contribute to the initiation and progression of human dental caries, especially root caries. We report that both A. naeslundii and A. viscosus react with a component in the Gardenia jasminoides extract to produce a distinct green product. This green color reaction was found to be dependent on the bacterial beta-glucosidase. The reaction is specific for cariogenic actinomyces, and it can detect as few as 10(4) cells of A. naeslundii and A. viscosus per ml.
