Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is a common injury among runners, and it is thought that abnormal lower extremity biomechanics contribute to its development. However, the relationship between biomechanical changes after a marathon and PFPS injury remains limited. This study aims to investigate whether differences in knee and hip kinematics and lower extremity muscle activities exist in recreational runners before and after a marathon. Additionally, it aims to explore the relationship between these biomechanical changes and the development of PFPS injury. 12 recreational runners participate

This systematic review aims to synthesise the effects of current shoe models in each shoe category and their specific features on running economy, performance and biomechanics. Electronic databases such as Web of Science, SPORTDiscuss, PubMed and Scopus were used to identify studies from 2015 to date. Due to the existing lack of consensus to define running shoes, only studies that specified the shoe brand and models used to assess their effect over runners with a certain level of fitness and training routine were included. Quality assessment of cross-sectional and intervention studies was cond

Although the role of shoe constructions on running injury and performance has been widely investigated, systematic reviews on the shoe construction effects on running biomechanics were rarely reported. Therefore, this review focuses on the relevant research studies examining the biomechanical effect of running shoe constructions on reducing running-related injury and optimising performance. Searches of five databases and Footwear Science from January 1994 to September 2018 for related biomechanical studies which investigated running footwear constructions yielded a total of 1260 articles. In full marathons, a considerable slowdown that typically occurs after 30 km, often referred to as "hitting the wall," is well known, but the underlying biomechanical mechanism remains unclear. This study aimed to elucidate pacing patterns and kinematic changes in marathon runners. Hierarchical clustering of running pace per kilometer of 297 participants, obtained from 58 marathon races, identified 3 groups, each exhibiting different biomechanical changes tracked by wearable sensors. Two groups that experienced a slowdown showed decreases in step length (effect size [ES] = 0.40-1.43), step fre

How the neuromechanics of the lower limb functional muscle groups change with running speed remains to be fully elucidated, with implications for our understanding of human locomotion, conditioning, and injury prevention. This study compared the neuromechanics (ground reaction and joint kinetics, kinematics and muscle activity) of middle-distance athletes running on an instrumented treadmill at six wide-ranging speeds (2.78-8.33 m·s-1). Ground reaction forces and kinematics were analyzed using inverse dynamics to calculate flexor and extensor joint torques, and positive and negative work done

PURPOSE: The mechanisms behind improvements in running economy (RE) from shoes with supercritical foams (SCF) compared with a traditional midsole material (ethylene vinyl acetate [EVA]) remain only partially understood. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of midsole compliance and midsole resilience of different foams on RE, and spatiotemporal and perception outcomes.
METHODS: To separate the effects of midsole compliance and midsole resilience, we compared 3 shoe conditions: EVA40, EVA35, and SCF35, where the number reflects the Asker C hardness, in 17 female runners in a randomized cros

BACKGROUND: Cross-training between running and cycling is widely used in endurance sports to maintain aerobic capacity while modulating sport-specific mechanical load. However, the extent to which physiological and performance adaptations transfer bidirectionally between these modalities remains unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis compared the effects of running-only (run-only) and cycling-only (cyc-only) training interventions to evaluate cross-training transfer to sport-specific VO2max and running performance.
METHODS: Randomized controlled trials with intervention durations o

Carbon plate running shoes (CPRS) have significantly advanced running shoe technology, but their orthopaedic impact remains controversial. Remarkably, most running-related overuse injuries affect one leg only, although running is generally considered a symmetrical physical activity. Therefore, this study examined whether CPRS affect biomechanical loading and between-leg symmetry. Twenty-two trained amateur triathletes (13 men and 9 women) participated in a two-day trial. On day 1, ventilatory thresholds (VT1 and VT2) were determined through incremental treadmill testing. On day 2, participants

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine the effects of fatigue on the coordination variability between the trunk, pelvis, and hips during treadmill running.
METHODS: The kinematics data were recorded during ten successive treadmill steps running at the preferred speed and at 80% and 120% of the preferred speed. The angle segment data obtained during the running cycles were normalized to 100 data points, and they were split into ten periods. The coordination variability was calculated using the continuous relative phase (CRP) and variability (VCRP) methods for the trunk, pelvic a

There is an increasing interest about upper body accelerations during locomotion and how they are altered by physical impairments. Recent studies have demonstrated that cognitive impairments affect gait stability in the elderly (i.e., their capacity for smoothing upper body accelerations during walking) but little attention has been paid to young adults with intellectual disabilities. The purpose of this study was to examine upright stability in young adults with intellectual disabilities during walking, running, and dual-task running (playing soccer). To this aim a wearable trunk-mounted devi

This study compared the physiological and metabolic demands of treadmill and overground running by examining running economy (RE), oxygen cost of transport (O2-COT), and energy cost (EC) across ventilatory threshold-scaled intensities in trained endurance athletes. Twelve male runners (21.3±2.4 years; 176.2±6.8 cm; 67.8±5.9 kg) completed a ramp test to determine V̇O2max, followed by identical stepwise protocols (8-15 km·h1¹; 3-min stages) performed indoors on a treadmill and outdoors on a 400 m track. Breath-by-breath gas exchange was averaged over the final 60-90 s of each stage to de

BACKGROUND: Sports bras play a critical role in running, with implications for breast discomfort, pain, performance, potential injury risk, and exercise participation for many women. While breast movement has been analyzed across support levels, most studies focus on discrete time-domain variables, such as peak impact acceleration. However, impact frequency content and tissue vibrations are also key factors that the body, and apparel components such as running shoes, may attenuate to maintain comfort and performance during running. This study explored how different sports bras and running shoe

This letter highlights key methodological concerns regarding the use of running power in mountain running analysis. The estimation of critical power from nonmaximal, race-derived efforts using a 2-point model may lead to inaccurate critical power and W' values, affecting derived intensity domains. Additionally, walking-running transitions act as a confounding factor, as power metrics underestimate the metabolic cost of walking. Finally, the validity of running power during downhill running is limited due to the dissociation between mechanical power and metabolic demand, and the greater influen

This study aimed to investigate the effects of uphill running (UR) and downhill running (DR) on impact loading and lower extremity biomechanics in runners with different habitual foot strike patterns (FSPs). Twenty-one habitual non-rearfoot strike pattern (NRFS) runners and 21 habitual rearfoot strike pattern (RFS) runners were recruited to run at 12 km h-1 at slopes of 10%, 0%, and -10% in a random order with their preferred FSPs on the instrumented treadmill. A motion capture system was used to synchronously collect marker trajectories. During UR and DR, 19% and 14% of the habitual RFS runne

The assessment of running kinematics is essential for injury prevention and rehabilitation, including anterior cruciate ligament sprains. Recent advances in computer vision have enabled the development of tools for quantifying kinematics in research and clinical settings. This study evaluated the accuracy of an OpenPifPaf-based markerless method for assessing sagittal plane kinematics of the ankle, knee, and hip during treadmill running using smartphone video footage and examined the impact of clothing on the results. Thirty healthy participants ran at 2.5 and 3.6 m/s under two conditions: (1)

The association between built environment and physical activity has been recognized. However, how and to what extent microscale streetscapes are related to running activity remains underexplored, partly due to the lack of running data in large urban areas. Moreover, few studies have examined the interactive effects of macroscale built environment and microscale streetscapes. This study examines the main and interactive effects of the two-level environments on running intensity, using 9.73 million fitness tracker data from Keep in Shanghai, China. Results of spatial error model showed that: 1)

The present study investigated the relationships between changes in running economy (RE) and indirect muscle damage markers following downhill running (DHR) to test the hypothesis that decreased RE after DHR would be associated with decreases in muscle function. Forty-five young men ran downhill (-15%) for 30 min at the velocity corresponding to 70% of their peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak). Oxygen uptake (VO2) and other parameters possibly associated with RE (blood lactate concentration, perceived exertion, stride length and frequency) were measured during 5-minute level running at the velocity c

Voluntary running in mice and forced treadmill running in rats have been shown to increase the amount of proliferating cells in the hippocampus. Little is known as yet about the mechanisms involved in these processes. It is well known that the endogenous opioid system is affected during running and other forms of physical exercise. In this study, we evaluated the involvement of the endogenous opioids in the regulation of hippocampal proliferation in non-running and voluntary running rats. Nine days of wheel running was compared with non-running in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), a rat s

Sprinting is a complex skill required in many team and individual sports, with practitioners placing an emphasis on enhancing this aspect of performance to improve sporting success. The task of sprinting involves patterns of inter- and intra-limb coordination and control, which emerge as the athlete accelerates to their maximal velocity. Traditionally, practitioners have attempted to modify sprint coordination patterns from a reductionist or cognitive perspective, decomposing performance to individual component parts using knowledge of coaching literature, biomechanics and skill acquisition th
