BACKGROUND: Pregnancy and labor in areas with high maternal morbidities as in Nigeria could be sufficiently stressful to precipitate mental disorders in women after delivery, which may be a new or a relapse of previously existing one, or an exacerbation of an attenuated mental illness in the nursing mother. Mental illness in a nursing mother, if not treated may result in impaired mother-infant relationship.
AIM: To determine the clinical and socio-demographic characteristics of women diagnosed with postpartum psychiatric conditions in a tertiary mental health facility of a developing country.

This paper argues that at the turn of the 19th century, nurses at the State Hospital in Morganton, North Carolina (now called Broughton Hospital) played critical roles in successfully implementing the best-known therapeutic methods of the time. They were also instrumental in developing the hospital's visibility and acceptance in rural western North Carolina. When the Hospital established its first nurse training school in 1895, this corps of first-generation western North Carolinians practising institutional nursing was highly esteemed in their field. Their skills not only served the community

In the early twentieth century, patients with infectious fevers represented a danger to the health of others including their nurses. This research describes the training New Zealand nurses received in fever nursing during the period 1903-1923, and considers how they applied hospital cross-infection principles in emergency tent fever camps in remote rural areas. It examines the reaction of nurses, hospital boards, and physicians to nurses who succumbed with their patients' fevers. It therefore reveals attitudes to nurses, prevailing ideas about responsibility for nurses' health, and elements in

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: Rural and remote communities in Aotearoa New Zealand face persistent challenges recruiting and retaining allied health professionals (AHPs). Despite investment enhancing medical and nursing rural workforces, the more than 40 professional groups comprising allied health, scientific and technical collectives have received little attention. We aimed to undertake a secondary analysis to systematically develop evidence-based, actionable and context-specific recommendations to improve rural AHP recruitment and retention in Aotearoa.
METHODS: We used a five-step process to tran

BACKGROUND: Many studies have demonstrated that pregnant women living in rural areas are more likely to experience domestic violence (DV). Systematic reviews on the prevalence and risk factors of DV among pregnant women have been conducted mainly in urban areas. Thus, there has been no determination of the global prevalence of DV among rural pregnant women. The objective of this study is to assess the prevalence and types of DV among rural pregnant women globally using systematic review and meta-analysis.
METHODS: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis expanded

INTRODUCTION: A 2021 federal rule permits opioid treatment programs (OTPs) to provide methadone through mobile medication units (MMUs), creating an opportunity to provide medication for people in residential care facilities. We used simulations to quantify the potential of MMUs to expand methadone access to people residing in residential substance use treatment facilities (RTF), skilled nursing facilities (SNF), and nursing facilities (NF) in New York State under different scenarios.
METHODS: For each facility (RTF, SNF, and NF), a need score was created using three items: facility opioid use

Encephalitis continues to be one of the most dreaded diagnoses because a high rate of morbidity and mortality are accepted even before starting the treatment. Most encephalitis cases occur in rural areas due to poor environmental sanitation, high-vector density, shortage of protected water supplies and lack of health education. Vaccination, environmental sanitation, vector control, health education and attention to prompt diagnosis and treatment in rural hospitals are the four essential pillars for reducing case fatality rate (CFR) of encephalitis. Frequently, virulence of the virus, immunolog

This study aimed to explore the level and relationship between the mental health service needs (MHSN), coping styles (CS), and mental health (MH) of old adults living alone in urban and rural, and to explore the moderating effects of coping styles. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 717 older adults living alone. The survey measured MHSN, CS, and MH. Data were analyzed using a structural equation and bootstrapping method. There were significant differences in the MHSN, CS, and MH between urban and rural old adults living alone (P < 0.05). The model of the impact of MHSN on MH in urban

INTRODUCTION: Trauma patients receiving care in rural settings face higher mortality rates than those at tertiary referral centers. Rural hospitals experience significant gaps in trauma care from limited access to specialists, procedural training, and standardized team-based education. In Georgia, over 20% of trauma patients come from rural areas where high-fidelity trauma training is limited. To address these disparities, we developed a trauma simulation curriculum for rural Georgia trauma providers.
METHODS: A mixed-methods needs assessment was conducted to identify training needs reported

INTRODUCTION: General surgeons are pivotal in providing essential care to rural communities, especially in colorectal cancer (CRC) prevention via endoscopy. The COVID-19 pandemic worsened access to care in these areas. This study aims to identify post-pandemic changes in rural surgical care and identifies strategies to improve workforce and retention.
METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with rural general surgeons from critical access hospitals (CAH) in Washington state. Interview questions were adapted from literature on medical workforce shortages. A coded theme analysis of the

More information is needed on how to recruit and retain rural health professionals, especially during times of crisis. In this article, we explore the experiences of rural health professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted in-depth, semi-structured interviews with physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and allied health professionals in the state of Minnesota from 2023 to 2024 (n = 17) and used iterative thematic analysis to identify key themes. Two key themes emerged from our analysis as challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic: staffing shortages and the politicization

The Flying Obstetric and Gynaecology (FOG) service visits 27 outback towns scattered over approximately one million square kilometers of western Queensland. The role and workload of an anaesthetist attached to the FOG Service and a prospective audit of 760 consecutive anaesthetics over a ten-month period are reported. Flying anaesthetists are in an ideal position to review standards of equipment, staffing levels, anaesthetic assistance in theatre as well as participate in both medical and nursing rural training programs. This ensures that deficiencies in anaesthetic related areas are identifie

Community nursing in Latin America requires a shift from control-oriented biomedical models toward relational and culturally responsive approaches capable of addressing persistent structural inequalities and intercultural complexity. This review develops the Relate-Capacity-Comfort (RCC) framework. This integrated model synthesizes three foundational nursing theories: Jean Watson's Theory of Human Caring, Dorothea Orem's Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory, and Katharine Kolcaba's Comfort Theory. The framework conceptualizes community nursing as a sequential process comprising relational engageme

Few studies have examined the return-to-work process for nurses who are injured at work. The purpose of this study was to identify the factors that facilitate or impede the successful return to work of nurses who have sustained a workplace injury from the perspective of return-to-work coordinators. A qualitative, descriptive study was conducted and 25 return-to-work coordinators from 14 different organizations participated in focus group discussions. The participants were recruited from healthcare settings in metropolitan and rural areas of New South Wales, Australia. These included aged-care,

BACKGROUND: Compared with urban, rural patients experience more postoperative complications, including surgical site infections and anastomotic leaks after colon cancer resection. As these complications often require long-term care, we investigated rural-urban differences in postoperative outcomes and discharge disposition.
STUDY DESIGN: We identified patients who underwent colon cancer resection from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare database (2014 to 2019). We used multivariable logistic regression models to evaluate rural-urban differences in complications, ICU admis
