BACKGROUND: Iron-rich food consumption has an invaluable effect for neonatal and fetal brain development as well as metabolic activities. Despite the public health importance of the consumption of iron-rich foods, there was no study, that assessed iron-rich food consumption in Rwanda. Therefore this study aimed to assess iron-rich food consumption and associated factors among children aged 6-23 months using Rwanda Demographic and Health Survey (RDHS).
METHODS: Secondary data analysis was done using RDHS-2019/20. Total weighted samples of 2455 children aged 6-23 months were included. Data codi

BACKGROUND: Anemia among Women of Reproductive Age (WRA) continues to be among the major public health problems in many developing countries, including Rwanda, where it increased in prevalence between the 2015 and 2010 Rwanda Demographic and Health Survey (RDHS) reports. A thorough understanding of its risk factors is necessary to design better interventions. However, to the best of our knowledge, no study has been conducted in Rwanda on a nationally representative sample to assess factors associated with anemia among WRA. Accordingly, this study was conducted to address such gap.

Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) is a highly lethal viral hemorrhagic fever caused by the Marburg virus, a member of the filovirus family closely related to Ebola. Characterized by sudden onset of fever, hemorrhage, and multi-organ failure, MVD outbreaks pose significant public health challenges due to high mortality rates and limited medical countermeasures. The 2024 outbreak in Rwanda marked a critical point, with 66 confirmed cases and 15 fatalities, highlighting the urgent need for effective management strategies. This narrative review, reviews key lessons from Rwanda's response, emphasizing th

BACKGROUND: End-stage renal disease (ESRD) requires hemodialysis (HD) for management. Various impacts of HD on the quality of life (QoL) of patients have been reported elsewhere, but not in Rwanda. We investigated the lived experiences of patients undergoing HD in Rwanda.
METHODS: This qualitative study used a phenomenological design involving interviews of 11 patients. The study population was patients undergoing dialysis in renal units at the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK) and King Faisal Hospital (KFH), Rwanda. Purposive sampling was used to recruit patients above 18 years w

INTRODUCTION: achieving universal health coverage by 2030 is a key objective for Rwanda, ensuring equitable access to health insurance. However, approximately 10% of the population remains uninsured. This study aims to identify socio-economic and demographic factors associated with health insurance uptake in Rwanda.
METHODS: we analyzed secondary data from the Fifth Integrated Household Living Conditions Survey (EICV 5), comprising 14,580 households. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to assess factors associated with health insurance uptake. Descriptive statistics were used to s

BACKGROUND: Snakebite envenoming is a medical emergency that requires rapid access to essential medicines and well-trained personnel. In resource-poor countries, mapping snakebite incidence can help policymakers to make evidence-based decisions for resource prioritisation. This study aimed to characterise the spatial variation in snakebite risk, and in particular to identify areas of relatively high and low risk, in Eastern Province, Rwanda.
METHODS: Snakebite surveillance of people bitten in 2020 was conducted in Eastern Province through household visits and case verification. Geostatistical

Household air pollution (HAP) from biomass combustion in traditional cooking methods poses significant health risks, particularly in rural communities of low- and middle-income countries. Improved cookstoves (ICS), designed to enhance combustion efficiency and reduce emissions, have been promoted as a transitional alternative towards cleaner cooking. However, evidence of their benefits remains mixed and context-specific. A randomized controlled trial was conducted to evaluate the impact of introducing the Save80 ICS on the respiratory health of adults in rural settlements in Rwanda. The study

Genitourinary (GU) fistula most commonly occurs following ischemic damage during protracted labor or iatrogenic injury at time of surgery. Many developing nations report high rates of ischemic fistula, in part due to limited healthcare access. We aimed to assess the etiology and trends of genitourinary fistula in Rwanda over a 10-year period. Retrospective chart review of women presenting for management of fistula in Kigali, Rwanda, between 2013 and 2024. Iatrogenic etiology was defined as those temporally following cesarean section or hysterectomy and included vesico-uterine, vesico-cervical,

BACKGROUND: Undernutrition and malaria remain major global public health challenges. The relationship between nutritional status and malaria infection is complex. Better understanding of their association is needed to improve prevention and control of these health conditions. Undernutrition can be assessed by evaluating nutrient intake (macronutrient and micronutrient intake) measured through Food Frequency Questionnaire or by using indicators for chronic undernutrition, including the stunting parameter defined by the World Health Organization as child being too short for age. This study aims

BACKGROUND: While the number of cardiac surgery programs in sub-Saharan Africa are increasing, it is still insufficient. With only 0.08 pediatric cardiac surgeons per million people, few cardiac centers routinely perform pediatric cardiac surgery. This has led to reliance on humanitarian medical missions or referral abroad for most African nations. This study outlines the outcomes of Rwanda's first sustainable pediatric cardiac surgery program.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed for all pediatric patients who received cardiac surgery between October 2022 and April 2024. Patie

BACKGROUND: Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is a common paediatric ear disease in developing countries, typically resulting from an acute otitis media (AOM) that is not promptly diagnosed or treated. Home remedies using herbal medicine in rural villages may contribute to treatment delays and complications.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study of children from three rural schools was conducted. Children between 6 and 14 years of age were randomly selected and screened by the lead author for CSOM between January and February 2015 by history and physical examination, including otoscopy. Pare

Marburg virus disease (MVD) is a highly virulent and often fatal disease caused by the Marburg virus, a member of the Filoviridae family, closely related to the Ebola virus. Historically, outbreaks have been sporadic but lethal across various African countries, with high case fatality rates (CFRs). In 2023, significant outbreaks occurred in Tanzania and Equatorial Guinea, with CFRs of 62.5% and 75%, respectively. In 2024, Rwanda faced its first outbreak, starting on September 27, 2024. By November 8, 2024, Rwanda had conducted 7,408 tests, confirming 66 cases, 15 of which were fatal, and 51 re

OBJECTIVES: The objective of the present study was to examine the diversity of Staphylococcus aureus from mastitis milk samples of cows in Rwanda.
METHODS: A total of 1080 quarter milk samples from 279 dairy cows were collected in 80 different farms from all five provinces of Rwanda. In total, 135 S. aureus isolates were obtained and subjected to genotyping (spa typing, DNA microarray, whole-genome sequencing (WGS)), antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) and phenotypic profiling by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy (including capsular serotyping).
RESULTS: Resistance to pen

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether integrating breast and cervical cancer screening in Rwanda's Women's Cancer Early Detection Program led to early breast cancer diagnoses in asymptomatic women.
METHODS: Launched in three districts in 2018-2019, the early detection programme offered clinical breast examination screening for all women receiving cervical cancer screening, and diagnostic breast examination for women with breast cancer symptoms. Women with abnormal breast examinations were referred to district hospitals and then to referral hospitals if needed. We examined how often clinics were held

INTRODUCTION: Women who deliver via cesarean section (c-section) experience short- and long-term disability that may affect their physical health and their ability to function normally. While clinical complications are assessed, postpartum functional outcomes are not well understood from a patient's perspective or well-characterized by previous studies. In Rwanda, 11% of rural women deliver via c-section. This study explores the functional recovery of rural Rwandan women after c-section and assesses factors that predict poor functionality at postoperative day (POD) 30.

INTRODUCTION: Trematodiases cause significant financial losses to livestock worldwide and some of which are zoonotic, raising public health concerns. In Rwanda, information on the prevalence of bovine trematodiases is scanty, and this hampers efforts to control and prevent them in the country.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the prevalence of bovine trematodiases in Nyagatare district and associated risk factors. One hundred cattle were randomly selected for this study and faecal samples were collected directly from the rectum to identify trematode eggs using a simple s

Schistosoma mansoni is endemic in Rwanda, and control programs have been implemented with a special focus on school-age children (SAC), ignoring pre-school age children (pre-SAC) for which the actual prevalence of the disease is not well established. This study consisted of a cross-sectional quantitative mapping of the distribution of Schistosoma mansoni and identification of associated risk factors among pre-SAC throughout the country. The study covered all the 17 districts of Rwanda endemic for Schistosoma mansoni, with a total sample of 4,675 children enrolled from 80 purposively selected v

BACKGROUND: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are a growing burden which affects every part of the world, including developing countries. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has varied etiology which can result from or complicate other NCDs such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. The growing prevalence of NCDs coupled with the increasing age in most developing countries, has seen a marked increase of CKD in these settings. CKD has been described as "the most neglected NCD" and greatly affects the quality of life of patients. It also places a huge economic burden on societies. However, few epidem
