[Saccadic eye movements in children with reading disorders].

Several reports raised the possibility that dysfunction of saccadic eye movements produces reading disorder (RD), although opposite conclusions have also been reported. In this study, saccadic eye movements were investigated in 13 forth graders with RD and 20 age-matched controls during reading and non-reading tasks. Compared to the control group, children with RD showed significantly higher incidences of both forward and backward saccadic eye movements in reading tasks, while they revealed a significantly lower number of saccadic eye movements in response to sequentially moving targets in two

Saccade and cognitive impairment associated with kava intoxication.

Kava is an extract from the Piper methysticum Forst. f. plant that has social and spiritual importance in Pacific islands societies. Herbal remedies that contain kava are used for the psychiatric treatment of anxiety and insomnia. Laboratory studies have found only subtle, if any, changes on cognitive or motor functions from the acute effects of consuming small clinical doses of kava products. Intoxication from recreational doses of kava has not been studied. The performance of individuals intoxicated from drinking kava (n=11) was compared with a control group (n=17) using saccade and cognitiv

Timing variability of repetitive saccadic eye movements.

We assessed the suitability of using the Wing and Kristofferson model for timing repetitive motor responses to analyse timing variability during repetitive saccadic eye movements. The model decomposes total timing variability (TV) into a central timing component (CV) and a peripheral motor delay component (MV). Eight normal subjects made voluntary horizontal saccades, in darkness, in synchrony with a regular auditory metronome. After 20 saccades had been produced, the metronome was switched off and subjects continued responding at the same frequency until 31 further saccades had been made. Int

Binocular saccadic eye movements in multiple sclerosis.

We attempted to increase the sensitivity for detection of abnormal binocular saccadic eye movements, particularly of the internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO) type associated with multiple sclerosis (MS). Saccades of 10 and 20 degrees were binocularly recorded with scleral sensor coils in 10 normal control subjects and 26 patients with definite or probable MS, seven of whom had a clinically manifest INO in one or both directions. In the cases in which this was accompanied by a dissociated nystagmus of the abducting eye, our recordings showed that such secondary saccades were also expressed, in a

The microscopic anatomy and physiology of the mammalian saccadic system.

A central goal of the Neurosciences is to provide an account of how the brain works in terms of cell groups organised into pattern generating networks. This review focuses on the neural network that generates the rapid movements of the eyes that are called saccades. A brief description of the metrical and dynamical properties of saccades is provided first. Data obtained from lesion and electrical stimulation experiments are then described; these indicate that the relevant neural machinery spreads over at least 10 distinct cortical and subcortical regions of the brain. Each one of these regions

Saccadic velocity analysis in patients with divergence paralysis.

Twelve patients with clinical findings of divergence paralysis underwent horizontal saccadic velocity testing. Peak velocities were measured using digitally sampled electro-oculography during 10 degrees, 20 degrees, and 30 degrees saccades. Results were compared with those of 12 age-matched controls. The peak saccadic velocities of each eye in adduction and 10 degrees abduction did not differ from those of age-matched controls (P > .05). The 20 degrees and 30 degrees abducting saccades showed mildly reduced saccadic velocities when compared with controls (P < .05). The finding of only mildly r

Saccadic eye movements of dyslexic adult subjects.

The characteristics of visually guided saccadic eye movements were compared in 12 normal adult subjects and 12 test subjects of normal intelligence, but with problems in reading and writing. All subjects were examined psychometrically for different cognitive abilities, and for their reading and writing capabilities. The anamnestic reports about their reading and writing problems earlier in their lives were analysed. Based on scores of the writing and reading tests, the test group was subdivided into two subgroups: A and B (group A reached medium, group B very low scores in both tests). Five di

Saccadic eye velocity in concomitant divergent squint.

Study was conducted on 10 normal subjects, 20 cases of unilateral divergent squint and 20 cases of alternating divergent squint. In unilateral divergent squint cases lateral rectus of nondominant eye showed overactivity on fixation with dominant eye. In the alternating divergent squint cases which had onset of squint at or after the age of 2 years showed increased saccadic velocity of medial rectus of non-dominant eye on fixation with dominant eye. Working hypothese have been suggested to explain these phenomena.

Ocular-motor profile and effects of memantine in a familial form of adult cerebellar ataxia with slow saccades and square wave saccadic intrusions.

Fixation instability due to saccadic intrusions is a feature of autosomal recessive spinocerebellar ataxias, and includes square wave intrusions (SWI) and macrosaccadic oscillations (MSO). A recent report suggested that the non-competitive antagonist of NMDA receptors, memantine, could decrease MSO and improve fixation in patients with spinocerebellar ataxia with saccadic intrusions (SCASI). We similarly tested two sisters, respectively of 58 and 60 years, with an unrecognized form of recessive, adult-onset cerebellar ataxia, peripheral neuropathy and slow saccades, who showed prominent SWI an

Predicting what and when across saccades: Evidence from the extrafoveal preview effect.

In order to fully process items of interest, we use information from outside the fovea to plan the target of the next saccadic eye movement. There is growing evidence that our initial preview of the identity and features of the saccade target, prior to bringing it to the fovea using the saccade, is used to make our subsequent post-saccadic processing more efficient. However, the mechanisms underlying trans-saccadic previews remain unknown. We investigated this in a gaze-contingent preview paradigm in which a face stimulus either remained the same ("valid preview") or changed ("invalid preview"

Unidirectional Palsy of Torsional Saccades in Ataxia Associated with Anti-GAD Antibody.

Antibodies against glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) are associated with various neurological syndromes including cerebellar ataxia and ocular motor abnormalities. We report a 67-year-old man with progressive dizziness and imbalance, who exhibited spontaneous downbeat and torsional nystagmus, normal vertical saccades, and a unilateral loss of torsional saccades during head tilting. Serum anti-GAD antibody was elevated. Tests for other autoantibodies and genes responsible for spinocerebellar ataxia were negative. Brain MRI showed cerebellar vermis atrophy The selective deficit of ipsiversive to

More (corrective) consecutive saccades after a lesion to the posterior parietal cortex.

To reach a target, primary saccades (S1s) are often followed by (corrective) consecutive saccades (S2, and potentially S3, S4, S5), which are based on retinal and extraretinal feedback. Processing these extraretinal signals was found to be significantly impaired by lesions to the posterior parietal cortex (PPC). Recent studies, however, added a more nuanced view to the role of the PPC, where patients with PPC lesions still used extraretinal signals for S2s and perceptual judgements (Fabius et al., 2020; Rath-Wilson & Guitton, 2015). Hence, it seems that a PPC lesion is not disrupting extrareti

Oculomotor control after hemidecortication: One hemisphere encodes normal ipsilateral oblique anti-saccades.

A critical question in neurology is how the brain reorganizes its structure and function following injury. Here, we consider oculomotor control following a massive brain lesion, a hemispherectomy. We used the oblique anti-saccade task which requires the suppression of a saccade towards a visual cue, flashed anywhere in a patient's seeing hemifield, and the generation, in the dark, of an anti-saccade to a task-dependent location in the opposite blind hemifield; inverting either the horizontal or both horizontal and vertical components. Anti-saccades require a visuo-motor vector inversion that n

Saccades and eye-head coordination in ataxia with oculomotor apraxia type 2.

Ataxia with oculomotor apraxia type 2 (AOA2) is one of the most frequent autosomal recessive cerebellar ataxias. Oculomotor apraxia refers to horizontal gaze failure due to deficits in voluntary/reactive eye movements. These deficits can manifest as increased latency and/or hypometria of saccades with a staircase pattern and are frequently associated with compensatory head thrust movements. Oculomotor disturbances associated with AOA2 have been poorly studied mainly because the diagnosis of oculomotor apraxia was based on the presence of compensatory head thrusts. The aim of this study was to

Spatial attention, feature-based attention, and saccades: three sides of one coin?

The last three decades has seen a steady growth of neuroscience research aimed at understanding the functions and sources of top-down attentional modulation in the brain. This correlates with recognition that attention may be a necessary component of sensory systems to support natural behaviors in natural environments. Complexity and clutter are two of the most recognizable hallmarks of natural environments, which can simultaneously contain vitally important and completely irrelevant stimuli. Attention serves as an adaptive filter providing each sensory modality preferential processing routes

Free exploration of painting uncovers particularly loose yoking of saccades in dyslexics.

Binocular yoking of saccades is essential for single vision of words during reading. This study examines the quality of binocular coordination in individuals with dyslexia, independent of the process of reading. Fifteen dyslexia children (11.2+/-1.4 years) and 15 non-dyslexia individuals (8 children, aged 11.1+/-1.3 years, and 7 adults, 24+/-3 years) were studied. Eye movements were recorded in two conditions. In the control condition, participants made saccades to a single target where the saccade direction and magnitude were controlled. In the experimental condition saccades were allowed to

Mechanism of interrupted saccades in patients with late-onset Tay-Sachs disease.

In late-onset Tay-Sachs disease (LOTS), saccades are interrupted by one or more transient decelerations. Some saccades reaccelerate and continue on before eye velocity reaches zero, even in darkness. Intervals between successive decelerations are not regularly spaced. Peak decelerations of horizontal and vertical components of oblique saccades in LOTS is more synchronous than those in control subjects. We hypothesize that these decelerations are caused by dysregulation of the fastigial nuclei (FN) of the cerebellum, which fire brain stem inhibitory burst neurons (IBNs).

Impairment of vertical saccades from an acute pontine lesion in multiple sclerosis.

A 62-year-old woman with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis suddenly complained of diplopia associated with bilateral adduction impairment, nystagmus of the abducting eye bilaterally, and sparing of abduction, convergence, and vertical eye movements, consistent with bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia. Within 1 week, she had developed a complete horizontal gaze paralysis even with the oculocephalic maneuver. Vertical saccades were slow and convergence was preserved. There was a right lower motor neuron seventh cranial nerve palsy. Brain MRI showed a new enhancing lesion involving the po
