Anatomical organization of the brainstem octavolateralis area of the oyster toadfish, Opsanus tau.

Anatomical studies were undertaken to analyze the brainstem organization of the auditory, vestibular, and lateral line nuclei in a teleost, the oyster toadfish, Opsanus tau. Neuronal cytoarchitectonics and horseradish peroxidase label of cranial nerves were utilized to delineate the borders of the five octavus and two lateralis brainstem nuclei. Each of the eight octavolateralis nerves were labeled individually to compare and contrast their central projections. Projections of the three semicircular canals were found to be largely overlapping. Terminal fields were observed within the eminentia

[The Cogan syndrome].

Cogan's Syndrom is the clinical entity of non syphilitic interstitial keratitis with vestibuloauditory symptoms. Although the disease is not rate the pathohistological findings in temporal bones are only reported twice. Our communication deals with observations made on a temporal bone out of O. Mayer's collection. The most striking findings are: the endolymphatic hydrops, the degeneration of the organ of Corti, the pathology of the ductus reuniens, the fibrosis within the cisterna perilymphatica, the destruction of the maculae and the most uncommon ossification within the scala vestibuli of th

Vestibular sensory epithelium in Meniere's disease.

Utricle and horizontal semicircular canal ampulla removed during labyrinthectomy from 11 patients with advanced Meniere's disease were studied under light and electron microscope. In light microscopy the epithelium of both sensory areas appeared fairly normal. Many sensory cells revealed fluid-filled crescents at the nucleus and many cells were extensively vacuolated. Ultrastructurally, a part of the observations were apparently artifacts due to specimen handling; some were normal, age-related findings. Some changes were considered secondary to dilation of the endolymphatic space. True signs o

Klinefelter syndrome presenting with perinatal ascites associated with unilateral renal agenesis and a prostatic utricle cyst.

We present a rare case of Klinefelter syndrome who presented with perinatal ascites, unilateral renal agenesis and a prostatic utricle cyst. The patient was born at term via emergency Caesarean section with gross abdominal distension. Antenatally, amniocentesis revealed a fetal karyotype of Klinefelter syndrome (47, XXY), and the 34-week ultrasound scan showed a cyst measuring 17×21×27 mm located inferior-posterior to the bladder. There was no ascites noted then, but a small left pelvic kidney was present. Ultrasound kidney, ureter and bladder as well as CT scan of the thorax, abdomen and pelv

Motion sickness and otolith asymmetry.

There is a highly scattered inter-individual susceptibility in man to motion sickness. It is discussed whether different masses of otoconias between right and left sides are responsible for a high susceptibility. In order to proof this theory, we measured the otoliths of fish (salmons, trouts, Xiphophorus Helleri; Sumatra barbes) and found big differences in the utricular stones up to 140%. The mass differences of the saccular stones were much smaller. In fish, showing abnormal swimming behavior during off-vertical axis rotation we found big mass differences compared to that of normal swimmers

Scanning electron microscopic observation of dark cells after streptomycin perfusion of the vestibule in guinea pigs.

Hearing has been stabilized in the majority of patients studied in the treatment of Meniére's disease with streptomycin. This observation suggests that effects of streptomycin may ameliorate endolymphatic hydrops, possibly by attenuating the activity of secretory tissue. The purpose of this study is to observe the dark cells of the utricle in guinea pigs after streptomycin perfusion of the vestibule. Twelve pigmented guinea pigs weighing 250-350 grams were used in this study. The vestibules in five guinea pigs were perfused monolaterally with 150 micrograms of streptomycin in artificial perily

Motion sickness induced by sinusoidal linear acceleration in rats.

The characteristics of linear acceleration to cause motion sickness of rats were examined using pica as a behavioral index of motion sickness. A vestibular sled was used to generate sinusoidal linear acceleration. At 0.4 Hz and with a peak acceleration of 0.15 G, the effectiveness of linear acceleration in inducing motion sickness was X-axis > Y-axis > Z-axis. At 0.4 Hz and along the X-axis, rats suffered from more severe motion sickness with a high peak G load (0.15 G) than with a low one (0.08 G). Along the X-axis and with a peak acceleration of 0.15 G, the severity of motion sickness was no

Role of otolith endorgans in the genesis of vestibular-visual conflict sickness (pitch) in the squirrel monkey (first report).

This experiment was designed to clarify each vestibular submodality's role in the genesis of vestibular-visual conflict sickness in pitch. We wanted to determine whether the ablation of the macula utriculi and macula sacculi, totally or separately, unilaterally and bilaterally, preserving the semicircular canals intact, could eliminate the conflict emesis in the squirrel monkey model. Observations were carried out over 5 months. In susceptible animals, the difference in conflict sickness scores between the pre- and the postutriculosacculectomy conditions was statistically significant. However,

Some properties of otoconia.

Otoconia are dynamic mineral deposits present in the gravity receptors of most vertebrates; fishes often have a single large mass called an otolith instead. Otoconia generally have the appearance of single crystals but contain organic and inorganic components, the mineral being almost exclusively a polymorph of calcium carbonate. The two phases are closely interrelated structurally. Ultra-high resolution transmission electron microscopy of rat otoconia showed them to be mosaic biominerals. The crystallites were 50-100 nm in diameter, had some rounded edges, and were highly ordered into laminae

Calcium functional imaging with high-resolution CT in the inner ear.

Although the otolith and otolith organs correlate with vertigo and instability, there is no method to investigate them without harmful procedures. We will create the technique for 3D microanatomical images of them, and investigate the in vivo internal state and metabolisms. The otolith and otolith organs images were reconstructed from a texture synthesis algorithm under the skull volume rendering algorithm using a cutting-plane method. The utricular macula was elongated pea-shaped. The saccular macula was almost bud-shaped. The changes in the amount of CaCO3 in the maculae and the endolymphati

Comparison of cervical vestibular evoked potentials evoked by air-conducted sound and bone-conducted vibration in vestibular Schwannoma patients.

OBJECTIVE: The vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) is associated with otolithic afferents and can be used to evaluate the function of the saccule and utricle. In this study, we compared cervical VEMP evoked by stimulation with Air-conducted sound (ACS) and bone-conducted vibration (BCV) to the forehead and investigated whether BCV can be used as a substitute for ACS. METHODS: Data were obtained from 33 patients with vestibular schwannoma. Vestibular examinations were performed preoperatively. VEMP was obtained upon stimulation with ACS (ACS cVEMP) and BCV to the forehead using a minis

Using principal component analysis to determine which vestibular stimuli provide best biomarkers for separating Alzheimer's from mixed Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is often mixed with cerebrovascular disease (AD-CVD). Heterogeneity of dementia etiology and the overlapping of neuropathological features of AD and AD-CVD make feature identification of the two challenging. Separation of AD from AD-CVD is important as the optimized treatment for each group may differ. Recent studies using vestibular responses recorded from electrovestibulography (EVestG™) have offered promising results for separating these two pathologies. An EVestG measurement records responses to several different physical stimuli (called tilts). In previous researc

A model analysis of static stress in the vestibular membranes.

BACKGROUND: The scheme of the core vestibular membranes, consisting of serially connected utricle, ampulla and semicircular canal, first appeared hundreds of millions of years ago in primitive fish and has remained largely unchanged during the subsequent course of evolution. The labyrinths of higher organisms build on this core structure, with the addition of the phylogenetically newer membrane structures, namely, saccule, lagena and cochlea. An analysis of static stress in these core vestibular membranes may contribute to a better understanding of the role of stress in the evolution of deriva

Retinoic acid deficiency impairs the vestibular function.

The retinaldehyde dehydrogenase 3 (Raldh3) gene encodes a major retinoic acid synthesizing enzyme and is highly expressed in the inner ear during embryogenesis. We found that mice deficient in Raldh3 bear severe impairment in vestibular functions. These mutant mice exhibited spontaneous circling/tilted behaviors and performed poorly in several vestibular-motor function tests. In addition, video-oculography revealed a complete loss of the maculo-ocular reflex and a significant reduction in the horizontal angular vestibulo-ocular reflex, indicating that detection of both linear acceleration and

Light and electron microscopic studies of a case with simultaneous Mondini and Michel deformities of the inner ears.

We performed light and electron microscopic studies on the temporal bones of a patient with genetic aplastic deafness, in which the right ear had a Mondini-type defect and the left ear a Michel-type anomaly. The round window of each ear was absent. The stapedial foot plate of the right ear was depressed at its central part and was covered by thin membrane. The course of the internal auditory meatus of the left ear was deviated ventrally. There was total aplasia of the cochlea in the left ear, while that of the right ear showed only three-quarters of a turn. In this ear, three sites of spherica

Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials: an overview.

UNLABELLED: The vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) test is a relatively new diagnostic tool that is in the process of being investigated in patients with specific vestibular disorders. Briefly, the VEMP is a biphasic response elicited by loud clicks or tone bursts recorded from the tonically contracted sternocleidomastoid muscle, being the only resource available to assess the function of the saccule and the lower portion of the vestibular nerve. AIM: In this review, we shall highlight the history, methods, current VEMP status, and discuss its specific application in the diagnosis of
