Protective behaviours among young African American women with non-monogamous sexual partners.

In the USA, partner non-monogamy is reported to be more common among African American women than White women and may contribute to African American women's increased risk for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Few studies have explicitly and comprehensively described the protective behaviours that African American women employ with non-monogamous partners to reduce their HIV risk. We conducted interviews to examine protective behaviours among 11 African American women aged 18-24 years who perceived that a partner in the preceding 12 months had another sex partner. Participan

Renegotiating cultural practices as a result of HIV in the eastern region of Malawi.

A number of studies have shown that HIV awareness is very high among Malawians and yet infection rates are rising. Local cultural practices have been identified as contributing to this contradictory situation. Using data from 12 focus-group discussions collected in Balaka, Zomba, Machinga and Mangochi, the paper explores the reformulation of nine cultural practices as a preventive measure against HIV. The study reveals that cultural practices that involve sexual acts for completion are mediated through condoms and HIV tests. The study also shows that traditional herbs known for healing ailment

Sexual behaviour in context: a global perspective.

Research aimed at investigating sexual behaviour and assessing interventions to improve sexual health has increased in recent decades. The resulting data, despite regional differences in quantity and quality, provide a historically unique opportunity to describe patterns of sexual behaviour and their implications for attempts to protect sexual health at the beginning of the 21st century. In this paper we present original analyses of sexual behaviour data from 59 countries for which they were available. The data show substantial diversity in sexual behaviour by region and sex. No universal tren

Walking the tightrope: balancing health and drug use.

This article stems from a study on San Francisco drug users and their health care experiences. Two hundred thirty-eight study participants were administered depth interviews and questionnaires to reveal a variety of health concerns and health behaviors. For these analyses, which focused on health practices and risky behaviors, the sample was divided into two groups: marijuana users, and other drug users (including methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, and crack). The findings indicate that drug users behave similarly to the general population regarding health practices, such as eating regularly, s

Determinants of condom use among sexually active youth in SBC intervention communities in Tanzania: A cross-sectional study.

HIV and unplanned pregnancies are significant public health concerns for youth in Sub-Saharan Africa. Consistent condom use is an effective behavioral method in preventing both health outcomes; however, it remains low and is declining among this population. Evidence indicates that preventive health behaviors are influenced by a range of specific factors relevant to their contexts. This study aimed to assess factors associated with condom use among sexually active youth in communities where social and behavior change (SBC) interventions were implemented in Tanzania. A cross-sectional study was

Increases in HIV Incidence Following Receptive Anal Intercourse Among Women: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Receptive anal intercourse (RAI) carries a greater per-act risk of HIV acquisition than receptive vaginal intercourse (RVI) and may influence HIV epidemics driven by heterosexual sex. This systematic review explores the association between RAI and incident HIV among women, globally. We searched Embase and Medline through September 2018 for longitudinal studies reporting crude (cRR) or adjusted (aRR) relative risks of HIV acquisition by RAI practice among women. Of 27,563 articles identified, 17 eligible studies were included. We pooled independent study estimates using random-effects models. W

Cocaine use in university students: relationships with demographics, mental health, risky sexual practices, and trait impulsivity.

BACKGROUND: Cocaine is increasingly used on a recreational basis by the general population with potential implications for mental health. The aim of this study was to assess how common cocaine use is, and its mental health associations, in a large sample of university students. METHODS: Approximately 10 000 university students were invited to take part in an online survey, which assessed the use of cocaine (ever or past year), alcohol and drug use, mental health issues, and impulsive and compulsive tendencies. Group differences in demographic and clinical characteristics were characterized.

Male partner testing and sexual behaviour following provision of multiple HIV self-tests to Kenyan women at higher risk of HIV infection in a cluster randomized trial.

INTRODUCTION: Without significant increases in uptake of HIV testing among men, it will be difficult to reduce HIV incidence to disease elimination levels. Secondary distribution of HIV self-tests by women to their male partners is a promising approach for increasing male testing that is being implemented in several countries. Here, we examine male partner and couples testing outcomes and sexual decision making associated with this approach in a cluster randomized trial. METHODS: We examined data from women at higher risk of HIV participating in the intervention arm of an ongoing pair-matched

The Protect and Respect program: a sexual risk reduction intervention for women living with HIV/AIDS.

In 2003 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) launched a new HIV prevention strategy that focused prevention efforts on people living with HIV. In response to a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)/Special Projects of National Significance (SPNS) initiative, a program development team in Philadelphia created the Protect and Respect program. The program integrates multiple-level prevention strategies and is tailored to address the strengths of HIV-positive women and the challenges they face to implementing behavior changes. The goal of Protect and Respect is to dec

Social isolation and domestic violence among female drug users.

The objective of this study was to examine the association between social isolation, domestic violence, and substance dependence among street-recruited female drug users. Hierarchical logistic regression was used to assess the independent contribution of social isolation and substance dependence to the likelihood that women will experience physical abuse. One hundred women (38.2%. N = 262) reported at least one incident of physical violence perpetrated by her most-recent sexual partner. Controlling for substance dependence and relationship status (the only significantly associated demographic

When gonorrhea rates rise, can HIV be far behind? CDC's latest STD report notes disturbing trend.

There were at least two significant infectious disease trends in the early 1980s. One of those was the advent of HIV infection. The other was the beginning of a long decline in gonorrhea rates. Perhaps due in part to the safe-sex practices made popular because of the risk of HIV infection, gonorrhea rates continued to decline throughout the 1980s and the 1990s until 1999.

Using a cascade approach to assess condom uptake in female sex workers in India: a review of the Avahan data.

BACKGROUND: The Avahan India AIDS Initiative was implemented to provide HIV prevention services to key populations including female sex workers (FSWs) who carry the burden of India's concentrated HIV epidemic. Established in 2003 and handed over to the Indian government in 2009, the Initiative included peer-led outreach education, condom promotion and distribution and STI treatment. This study aimed to determine if HIV prevention cascades could be generated using routine monitoring and evaluation data from the Avahan program and to assess their value in identifying and responding to program ga

Patterns of reasoning and decision making about condom use by urban college students.

HIV infection rates are rapidly increasing among young heterosexuals, making it increasingly important to understand how these individuals make decisions regarding risk in sexual encounters. Our objective in this study was to characterize young adults' safer sex behaviour and associate this behaviour with patterns of reasoning, using cognitive, information processing methods to understand the process of sexual risk taking. Sixty urban college students from NYC maintained diaries for two weeks and then were interviewed regarding lifetime condom use and sexual history. Using cognitive analysis,

Short-term acceptability of female condom use among low-fee female sex workers in China: a follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: Low-fee female sex workers (FSW) lack power to effectively negotiate male condom use with clients. Female condoms (FCs) may provide an alternative strategy. This study was conducted to assess the acceptability of FC use among low-fee FSWs, and to identify appropriate candidates for future FC promotion. METHODS: A one-month follow-up study was conducted. At entry into the study, eligible participants completed a baseline questionnaire and were given 10 FCs. At the one-month follow up encounter, the number of used FC packages were counted and each participant completed a follow-up q

Improving knowledge, acceptance, and utilization of female condoms among sex workers through a peer education: a mixed methods study in Surakarta Municipality, Central Java Province, Indonesia.

Female sex workers (FSW) are high-risk for HIV infection. The authors conducted a quasi-experimental study by providing peer education on 110 FSWs, and routine HIV education on 120 controls, in Surakarta Indonesia. An additional qualitative study was performed to explain the contextual factors contributing to the effectiveness of peer education. The difference in difference approach showed that peer education improved knowledge, acceptance, and utilization of female condom. The improvements were related to the clients' perceptions, access, and available interactive communication with the peer

Characterizing the Patterns of HIV Disclosure to Clients Among South African Female Sex Workers in Port Elizabeth.

Female sex workers (FSW) in South Africa are disproportionately affected by HIV, yet little is known about their HIV-status disclosure with clients. Among 410 FSW participating in a cross-sectional study, 213 were HIV positive and aware of their status prior to enrollment. Among FSW aware of their HIV-status, 35% (74/213) reported disclosing their HIV-status to paying clients, whereas 75% (118/158) of those with regular, non-paying partners disclosed to them. In a multivariable analysis, disclosure to clients was associated with more years of education, disclosure to non-paying partners, and m

Are female sex workers able to negotiate condom use with male clients? The case of mobile FSWs in four high HIV prevalence states of India.

INTRODUCTION: Condom promotion among female sex workers (FSWs) is a key intervention in India's National AIDS Control Program. However, there is limited understanding of how FSWs negotiate condom use with male clients, particularly in the context of their mobility for sex work. The objective of this study is to examine the factors associated with the mobile FSWs' ability to refuse unsafe sex and successfully negotiate condom use with unwilling male clients. METHODS: Data for 5498 mobile FSWs from a cross-sectional survey conducted in 22 districts of four states in southern India were analyzed

Determinants of Intention to Use HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis and Condom Use Among a Sample of Cisgender Female Sex Workers Working Mostly Outdoors in Madrid, Spain.

There is scant knowledge regarding pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use among female sex workers (FSWs) in Europe. Spain recognized FSWs as a population at high risk of acquiring HIV and granted them subsidized access to PrEP when the medication first became nationally available in 2019. Nevertheless, FSWs represented just 0.2% of PrEP users in 2022. A total of 102 HIV-negative FSWs reached through field activities of local NGOs located in Madrid were interviewed between January and March 2022. Participants were selected through convenience sampling over a fixed recruitment period. FSWs complet
