Zika Virus Infection Among U.S. Pregnant Travelers - August 2015-February 2016.

After reports of microcephaly and other adverse pregnancy outcomes in infants of mothers infected with Zika virus during pregnancy, CDC issued a travel alert on January 15, 2016, advising pregnant women to consider postponing travel to areas with active transmission of Zika virus. On January 19, CDC released interim guidelines for U.S. health care providers caring for pregnant women with travel to an affected area, and an update was released on February 5. As of February 17, CDC had received reports of nine pregnant travelers with laboratory-confirmed Zika virus disease; 10 additional reports

Acute Lymphatic Filariasis Infection in United States Armed Forces Personnel Deployed to the Pacific Area of Operations during World War II Provides Important Lessons for Today.

The deployment of United States (US) Armed Forces personnel into the central Pacific islands of Samoa and Tonga, which is highly-endemic for lymphatic filariasis (LF), resulted in thousands of cases of the acute form of this disease and greatly reduced their ability to carry out their mission. The major driving factor for the intensity of transmission was the aggressiveness and efficiency of the Aedes species mosquito vectors, especially the day-biting Ae. Polynesiensis. The paper reminds us of the danger that tropical diseases can pose for troops sent into endemic areas and constant and caref

The 'Influenza' Vaccine Used during the Samoan Pandemic of 1918.

In 1918, a crude influenza vaccine made from chemically inactivated, mixed cultures of respiratory bacteria was widely used prior to the understanding that influenza was caused by a virus. Such vaccines contained no viral material and probably consisted largely of bacterial endotoxin. The Australian military used such a vaccine on Samoa in December 1918 and thought it was valuable. Post hoc analyses suggest that the mixed respiratory bacteria vaccine may have actually been of some benefit, but the mechanism of such protection is unknown. Although such a crude vaccine would not be considered in

A genome-wide association study of anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels in Samoan women.

STUDY QUESTION: Can a genome-wide association study (GWAS) and transcriptome-wide association study (TWAS) help identify genetic variation or genes associated with circulating anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels in Samoan women? SUMMARY ANSWER: We identified eleven genome-wide suggestive loci (strongest association signal in ARID3A 19-946163-G-C [ p = 2.32 × 10⁻⁷]) and seven transcriptome-wide significant genes ( GINS2, SENP3, USP7, TUSC3, MAFA, METTL4, NDFIP1 [all with a p < 2.50 × 10⁻⁶]) associated with circulating AMH levels in Samoan women. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Three prior GWASs of AMH

Samoan Men's Sexual Attraction and Viewing Time Response to Male-to-Feminine Transgender and Cisgender Adults.

In many different cultures, some men express sexual interest in male-to-feminine (MtF) transgender individuals, but others do not. We examined whether, in Samoa, men who are sexually interested in fa'afafine (Samoan MtF transgender individuals) (MSF; N = 40) differed from men who were exclusively sexually interested in women (MSW; N = 41) in terms of their self-reported sexual attraction and viewing times responses to images of MtF transgender individuals who were feminine (e.g., had feminine hairstyles, makeup) but had not undergone gender-affirming surgeries (e.g., breast augmentation), cisg

Birth order in transgendered males from Polynesia: a quantitative study of Samoan fa'afāfine.

In previous research, a late birth order has been shown to be a characteristic of Western homosexual transsexual men. To date, however, it is not clear if a late birth order is specific to Western transsexuals or may be a characteristic of non-Western transgendered males as well. We quantified birth order in a sample of 13 transgendered males known as fa'afāfine from Samoa. On average, the fa'afāfine were late born, both with regard to number of older brothers and number of older sisters, although the effect appeared to be somewhat stronger with regard to number of older brothers. We consider

A loss-of-function IFNAR1 allele in Polynesia underlies severe viral diseases in homozygotes.

Globally, autosomal recessive IFNAR1 deficiency is a rare inborn error of immunity underlying susceptibility to live attenuated vaccine and wild-type viruses. We report seven children from five unrelated kindreds of western Polynesian ancestry who suffered from severe viral diseases. All the patients are homozygous for the same nonsense IFNAR1 variant (p.Glu386*). This allele encodes a truncated protein that is absent from the cell surface and is loss-of-function. The fibroblasts of the patients do not respond to type I IFNs (IFN-α2, IFN-ω, or IFN-β). Remarkably, this IFNAR1 variant has a mino

Faith, Food, and Health: Samoan Churches as Missed Health Communication Resources in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) disproportionately affect Samoan communities in the Pacific Islands and United States, and food literacy is an important determinant of dietary behavior. Churches are central Samoan cultural institutions, yet their role in U.S. diaspora health practices remains underexamined. This study examines churches as nutrition and health information sources among the Samoan diaspora in the San Francisco Bay Area, one of the largest Pacific Islander populations in the United States. Data derive from surveys of 147 Samoan adults and five semi-structured interviews conducte

Lymphatic filariasis in soldiers exposed in INDOPACOM.

Some military organizations in the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) give returning soldiers presumptive treatment for filariasis. As there have been few clinical cases in recent decades, the historical basis for this chemotherapy was reviewed. During the Second World War, U.S. Marines stationed on Polynesian islands such as Tonga, Samoa, and Fiji experienced clinical lymphatic filariasis. Although thousands of both U.S. and Australian soldiers served in New Guinea, few, if any, cases of lymphatic filariasis were ascribed to Melanesia. While the French Army reported dozens of cases of fila

International foodborne outbreak of Shigella sonnei infection in airline passengers.

During 22-24 August 2004, an outbreak of Shigella sonnei infection affected air travellers who departed from Hawaii. Forty-seven passengers with culture-confirmed shigellosis and 116 probable cases who travelled on 12 flights dispersed to Japan, Australia, 22 US states, and American Samoa. All flights were served by one caterer. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis of all 29 S. sonnei isolates yielded patterns that matched within one band. Food histories and menu reviews identified raw carrot served onboard as the likely vehicle of infection. Attack rates for diarrhoea on three surveyed flights wi

Beliefs and attitudes of Samoan women toward early detection of breast cancer and mammography utilization.

BACKGROUND: Among Pacific Islanders in Hawaii, the breast has been the foremost cancer site. Among Samoans, it is a leading cancer site along with sites for respiratory cancers. A recent study reported that cancer has been diagnosed at relatively advanced stages in younger Samoans. METHODS: An exploratory, qualitative design was used with a semi-structured, open ended, talk story interview with Samoan women aged 40 years and older who spoke English and who had no personal history of breast cancer. The coding of interviews was validated with a faculty member unrelated to the study. Interviews

Scabies and Bacterial Superinfection among American Samoan Children, 2011-2012.

BACKGROUND: Scabies, a highly pruritic and contagious mite infestation of the skin, is endemic among tropical regions and causes a substantial proportion of skin disease among lower-income countries. Delayed treatment can lead to bacterial superinfection, and treatment of close contacts is necessary to prevent reinfestation. We describe scabies incidence and superinfection among children in American Samoa (AS) to support scabies control recommendations. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We reviewed 2011-2012 pharmacy records from the only AS pharmacy to identify children aged ≤14 years with fil

Combating vaccine hesitancy and other 21st century social determinants in the global fight against measles.

The year 2019 marked the return of measles after almost two decades of unprecedented successes in global vaccination programs. Measles transmission due to sharp declines in measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination coverage is now widespread among nations that previously saw impressive public health gains including Philippines, DR Congo, Madagascar, Samoa, many in Europe, and the United States and Venezuela in the Americas. Key determinants include the interruption of vaccine health systems due to war, conflict, and political instability; food insecurity and urbanization; and an increasingly glo

The unusually diverse mortality patterns in the Pacific region during the 1918-21 influenza pandemic: reflections at the pandemic's centenary.

The 1918-21 influenza pandemic was the most lethal natural event in recent history. In the Pacific region, the pandemic's effects varied greatly across different populations and settings. In this region, the pandemic's lethal effects extended over 3 years, from November, 1918, in New Zealand to as late as July, 1921, in New Caledonia. Although a single virus strain probably affected all the islands, mortality varied from less than 0·1% in Tasmania, to 22% in Western Samoa. The varied expressions of the pandemic across the islands reflected the nature and timing of past influenza epidemics, deg

Prevalence of anti-delta antibodies in pregnant women in Bandung, Indonesia.

Knowledge of the epidemiology of hepatitis D virus (HDV)-infection is very scarce in many parts of the world. The endemicity of delta-infection is believed to be maintained and spread through the network of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) carriers in the community. In the Far East and the Pacific area, the prevalence of chronic HBsAg carriers is mostly high. Markers of HDV infection are very frequent in some regions (e.g. parts of China, Fiji Isles, Samoa), in other regions they are almost absent (e.g. Taiwan, Thailand, parts of China). In the Bandung region (West Java, Indonesia) we found
