Detection of calicivirus from fecal samples from children with acute gastroenteritis in the West Central region of Brazil.

The objective of this study was to describe the circulation of caliciviruses in the West Central region of Brazil and its correlation with children's gender and age, as well as with the year and months of the sample collection. Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction was performed to detect the human calicivirus genome in 1006 fecal samples that were collected in Goiânia (n = 696) and Brasília (n = 310). Viral RNA was detected in 8.6% of the samples. No significant difference in viral prevalence was found regarding gender, age or year of the sample. However, it was observed that in Goi

Multiplex detection of eight different viral enteropathogens in clinical samples, combining RT-PCR technology with melting curve analysis.

BACKGROUND: Early and accurate identification of infection viruses among children can benefit the personalized medical treatment and management, and reduce the future occurrence of serious symptoms. Thus, it is critical to develop a high-throughput multiplex real-time RT-PCR method to improve the accuracy and efficiency in routine clinical lab tests. METHODS: We developed a real time RT-PCR combined with melting curve analysis (RRCMC) method for simultaneous detection of rotavirus A, B, C, norovirus GI and GII, adenovirus, astrovirus and sapovirus. RESULTS: Stool samples were collected from

Viral enteritis in intestinal transplant recipients.

Intestinal transplant recipients (ITR) are at high risk for infections due to the high level of immunosuppression required to prevent rejection. There are limited data regarding viral enteritis post-intestinal transplantation. We retrospectively reviewed ITR transplanted between January 2008 and December 2016. Descriptive statistics, including mean (standard deviation) and median (range), were performed. Sixty-one (43.9%) of the 139 transplanted patients had viral enteritis: 26% norovirus, 25% adenovirus, and 9% each rotavirus and sapovirus. The median age of pediatric patients was 1.6 years (

Detection and characterization of human caliciviruses in hospitalized children with acute gastroenteritis in Blantyre, Malawi.

The human caliciviruses (HuCVs), including Norovirus and Sapovirus, are recognized causes of acute gastroenteritis in children and adults. A 1-year study was undertaken in Blantyre, Malawi, to examine the prevalence, and genetic diversity, of human caliciviruses (HuCVs) amongst children under 5 years of age hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis. Using the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), combined with nucleotide sequencing of the RT-PCR products, HuCVs were detected in 34/398 (8.5%) of children. Twelve (35.3%) of the children were co-infected with additional enteric

[Noroviruses and sapoviruses in man and farm animals].

Noro- and Sapoviruses belong to the virus family Caliciviridae and are important causative agents of acute epidemic gastroenteritis in man. In many cases transmission of Noro- and Sapoviruses occurs via contaminated food or water and the respective diseases are therefore designated as food borne. Recently, the presence of Noro- and Sapoviruses in farm animals has attracted increasing attention. Clinical symptoms were observed after experimental infection of cattle and swine with members of the two virus groups. Thus far it is not known, whether virus transmission from animals to man does occur

Progress in human intestinal organoid research: applications to acute gastroenteritis viruses.

Acute gastroenteritis viruses, such as rotavirus, human norovirus, human astrovirus, human adenovirus, human sapovirus, represent significant threats to global public health. Research on these pathogens has long been hampered by the limitations of conventional models. Animal and cell-based systems, widely used in virological studies, show limited efficiency in supporting rotavirus replication, while noroviruses remain largely non-cultivable in these settings. Organoids-complex, three-dimensional multicellular structures derived from stem cells-exhibit organ-specific characteristics and spatial

Molecular characterization of norovirus variants and genetic diversity of noroviruses and sapoviruses in Thailand.

Norovirus (NoV) and Sapovirus (SaV) have been reported as a common cause of acute gastroenteritis worldwide. For a decade, surveillances of NoV and SaV have been conducted continually in Thailand. To monitor the epidemiological situation and to determine the genetic variation of NoV and SaV in Chiang Mai, Thailand, 567 samples collected from pediatric patients hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis were examined during 2007, and 2010-2011 by semi-nested RT-PCR and nucleotide sequencing methods. NoV was detected at 15.9%. Phylogenetic analysis revealed multiple NoV genotypes, GI/14 (1.1%), GII

Epidemiology and clinical features of gastroenteritis in hospitalised children: prospective survey during a 2-year period in a Parisian hospital, France.

Rotavirus is recognised as the most important agent of severe acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in young children. In a 2-year prospective survey, we investigated the epidemiology and clinical features of the viral and bacterial pathogens in children hospitalised for AGE. The study was performed in a Parisian teaching hospital from November 2001 to May 2004. Clinical data were prospectively collected to assess the gastroenteritis severity (20-point Vesikari severity score, the need for intravenous rehydration, duration of hospitalisation). Stools were systematically tested for group A rotavirus, nor

Genotype Diversity of Enteric Viruses in Wastewater Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Viruses remain the leading cause of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) worldwide. Recently, we reported the abundance of AGE viruses in raw sewage water (SW) during the COVID-19 pandemic, when viral AGE patients decreased dramatically in clinics. Since clinical samples were not reflecting the actual state, it remained important to determine the circulating strains in the SW for preparedness against impending outbreaks. Raw SW was collected from a sewage treatment plant in Japan from August 2018 to March 2022, concentrated by polyethylene-glycol-precipitation method, and investigated for major gastroe

Molecular epidemiology of human enteric caliciviruses in The Netherlands.

Caliciviruses are among the most common causes of gastroenteritis in people of all age groups. These antigenetically and genetically diverse viruses have been grouped into two genera within the family Caliciviridae, designated Norwalk-like viruses (NLV) and Sapporo-like viruses (SLV). To gain more insight in their epidemiology, we have developed a tentative genotyping scheme, which was used to differentiate the viruses detected in a set of epidemiological studies. NLVs and SLVs were detected by generic RT-PCR in stool specimens from 5.1% and 2.4% of cases with acute gastroenteritis for which a
