The diagnosis of Ewing sarcoma can be challenging, particularly when the tumor is present in an atypical location and resembles histologic mimics. The hallmark feature of Ewing sarcoma is chromosomal translocation, t(11;22)(q24;q12), involving EWSR1 and ETS gene family members. For decades, fluorescence in situ hybridization with a break-apart EWSR1 probe has been the diagnostic gold standard. However, EWSR1 rearrangements have been identified in other malignancies; thus, the detection of chimeric EWSR1 transcripts has become a preferable approach. Occasionally, insufficient tissue, severe RNA

INTRODUCTION: Ewing sarcoma is a rare, aggressive malignancy of small round blue cells that typically arises from bone or soft tissue. Primary intracranial involvement is exceedingly uncommon, particularly in adults, and is associated with diagnostic challenges, high recurrence rates, and poor prognosis. Limited data exist regarding optimal management strategies for recurrent intracranial Ewing sarcoma in adult patients.
CASE SUMMARY: We report the case of a 24-year-old pregnant female who presented with progressive headaches, vomiting, and left parietal swelling. MRI revealed a ring-enhancin

Malignant small round cell tumors represent a diagnostic challenge for cytologists and pathologists. This case series describes four cases of unusual metastasis of small round cell tumors subtypes into body cavities generating effusions in which fluid cytological examination suggested the neuroendocrine origin of the tumors. Tumor diagnosis (Ewing sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor and desmoplastic small round cell tumors) were unknown at the cytological evaluation. We can highlight the importance of the accurate analyses of body fluids, both for early diagnosis of metastatic disease, and

Primary bone lymphomas are rare, even though secondary involvement of the bone marrow is a common event in systemic lymphomas. Most primary bone lymphomas are primary bone diffuse large B-cell lymphomas (PBDLBCLs) with a rare occurrence of follicular, marginal zone, anaplastic large cell, Hodgkin, and T-cell lymphomas. The PBDLBCL affects the middle-aged to elderly population, with a slight predominance in men. The patients present with bone pain, palpable mass, fractures, or neurologic symptoms. The metaphysis of bones is a common location of PBDLBCL. Morphologically, the lymphoma consists of

A 14-month-old male Armenian hamster (Cricetulus migratorius) presented with a spontaneous, subcutaneous, firm mass (4.0 × 2.0 × 1.5 cm) on the ventral neck extending towards the cheek pouch causing multifocal small oral ulcerations. This animal was immunized subcutaneously on the dorsal neck for the development of monoclonal antibodies seven months before presentation. The animal was euthanized and necropsy was performed. Histopathology of the mass showed a well demarcated, multilobulated, unencapsulated, highly cellular, neoplastic mass composed of spindle cells arranged in interlacing strea

A 41-year-old man had a peripheral neuroectodermal tumor develop at the distal third of the fibula 4 years after radiotherapy for relapsed villonodular synovitis. This type of sarcoma usually is classified into the heterogeneic group of small round-cell bone tumors as a subdivision of Ewing's sarcomas. The immuno-staining positivity of the neoplastic cells for the neuron-specific enolase allowed the authors to make the diagnosis of a tumor with neuroectodermal origin. When the histologic study confirmed the diagnosis, the patient was treated with chemotherapy, surgical excision of the tumor, a

BACKGROUND: Spinal neoplasms are sparsely documented in juvenile dogs. Case reports and small case series have described nephroblastomas, primitive neuroectodermal tumours, gliomas, certain sarcomas, and osteochondromas, but round cell sarcomas have not previously been documented.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes a 10-week-old female Rottweiler puppy with acute onset of progressive ataxia and pelvic limb lameness. Neurological examination localised a T3-L3 myelopathy and MRI revealed an ovoid, well-marginated mass extending from mid L3 to caudal L4 vertebrae. Post-mortem examinat

Introduction: Pediatric orbital tumors encompass a wide spectrum of neoplasms, many of which are malignant small round cell tumors with overlapping histology. Sarcomas with BCOR genetic alterations are undifferentiated round cell sarcomas (URCS) characterized by BCOR rearrangements or internal tandem duplications, having distinct clinical features. Being previously unrecognized in the orbit, they have potential for misdiagnosis. Patients: We describe two cases of orbital sarcomas with BCOR genetic alterations. Results: Both girls, 8 and 16 months of age, respectively, presented with progressiv

We report a case of granulocytic sarcoma (chloroma) presenting as a giant breast tumor in a pregnant woman with no history of leukemia. The case was initially diagnosed as medullary carcinoma on a biopsy specimen and a modified radical mastectomy was performed. The diagnosis of granulocytic sarcoma requires the pathologist's high index of suspicion. The presence of immature eosinophils was an important clue. Leder's chloroacetate esterase stain; immunostaining for myeloperoxidase, CD34, CD43, CD68, and lysozyme; and ultrastructural finding of cytoplasmic lysosomal granules and Auer bodies all

We present a case of embolic acute mesenteric ischaemia (AMI) secondary to an underlying cardiac sarcoma, an exceedingly rare presentation only reported twice before. A 46-year-old man presented to accident and emergency department during the night with severe abdominal pain and vomiting. An urgent CT angiograph demonstrated superior mesenteric artery (SMA) occlusion with ischaemic small bowel. Joint surgical effort from vascular and general surgeons successfully recanalised the SMA and a 20 cm segment of small bowel was resected. Postoperatively, an echocardiogram demonstrated a mass within t

BACKGROUND: Primary extraosseous intracranial Ewing's sarcoma, also known as a peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor or "small round blue cell tumor," is an extremely rare entity with limited representation in the literature beyond the pediatric population.
OBSERVATIONS: A 67-year-old male suffering occipital headache, nausea, and gait disturbance was found to have a large, avidly contrast-enhancing cerebellopontine angle mass extending into the cervical spinal canal with associated mass effect on medulla, cerebellum, fourth ventricle, and cervical spinal cord. This mass was not present

Undifferentiated small round cell sarcoma of bone and soft tissue are rare, malignant neoplasms, often presenting diagnostic challenges due to its overlapping features with other conditions such as osteomyelitis and Brodie abscess. Accurate diagnosis requires a combination of imaging studies, histopathology, and genetic testing. Delayed or misdiagnosis can impact the prognosis and treatment outcomes. We present the case of a 34-year-old female who initially presented with persistent left upper thigh pain. Initial imaging raised suspicion of chronic osteomyelitis, with subsequent MRIs showing a

Friend leukemia integration site 1 (FLI-1) nuclear transcription factor has been proposed as a suitable tool in the differential diagnosis of small round cell sarcomas. It has also been described as a nuclear marker of endothelial differentiation. Expression of FLI-1 has been demonstrated in Ewing's sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor (ES/PNET) and vascular neoplasms. In the present study, we describe 2 cases of metastatic melanoma with small round blue cell morphology that showed strong nuclear expression of FLI-1. Because of the small round blue cell morphology and negative immunohistoch

Putative sarcomas of follicular dendritic cells are extremely uncommon and only small case numbers have been clearly documented. A major difficulty in their delineation has been the persistent controversy over the phenotype and ontogeny of normal follicular dendritic cells. Two new cases arising in adult females are presented herein, both of which had initially been mistaken for metastases from a true soft tissue sarcoma. Their morphology, immunophenotype, and ultrastructure (in one case) are described in order to aid their wider recognition. In the light of these findings, the nature and orig

Ewing sarcoma (ES) is a malignant small round blue cell tumor most frequently arising in the long bones of adolescents and young adults, characterized by a translocation involving the Ewing sarcoma RNA-binding protein 1 (EWSR1) gene, most commonly the EWSR1/friend leukemia integration 1 (FLI1) fusion. We report a case of a 26-year-old man with left ankle pain found to have an extraosseous soft tissue mass surrounding the calcaneus. Histopathology revealed a highly cellular neoplasm of uniform small round blue cells arranged in sheets and nests, immunoreactive for cluster of differentiation 99

We report a case of a 52-year-old female with synovial sarcoma of the uterine corpus. Grossly, the partly polypoid tumor involved the endometrium with invasion into the inner half of the myometrium. Histologically, the tumor showed biphasic structure with the predominance of poorly differentiated small to medium sized round to oval cells. These cells showed high nuclear to cytoplasmic ratio and were arranged in diffuse sheets. Other component consisted of larger epitheloid cells with ample eosinophilic cytoplasm arranged in irregular nests. These cells were only present in a small amount. Immu

Karthik DhandapaniEwing sarcoma arises in both bones (most common) and soft tissues and it commonly affects young adults. The tumor is composed of small round cells showing positivity for CD99 and FLI1 on immunohistochemistry (IHC). We describe ganglion cell differentiation post-chemotherapy in Ewing sarcoma which is a rare phenomenon. A 13-year-old girl presented with a chest wall mass. On biopsy correlating with IHC, the diagnosis was rendered as Ewing sarcoma. She underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by resection of the tumor. On microscopic evaluation, the tumor showed prominent gan

Extraskeletal Ewing's sarcoma is a rare tumor. The most common sites of occurrence are on the trunk, extremities, and retroperitoneum. This type of tumor is well characterized by recurrent chromosomal translocation such as t (11;22) (q24;q12) (EWSR1/FLI1) or t (21;22) (q22;q12) (EWSR1/ERG) and overexpression of MIC2/CD99 on tumor cell membrane. We describe the first reported case of an esophageal extraskeletal Ewing's sarcoma with confirmation from immunohistochemical and molecular diagnoses. A 56-year-old man developed a polypoid tumor located in the lower part of the esophagus. The tumor was

The advent of novel cancer immunotherapy approaches is revolutionizing the treatment for cancer. Current small animal models for most cancers are syngeneic or genetically engineered mouse models or xenograft models based on immunodeficient mouse strains. These models have been limited in evaluating immunotherapy regimens due to the lack of functional human immune system. Development of animal models for bone cancer faces another challenge in the accessibility of tumor engraftment sites. Here, we describe a protocol to develop an orthotopic humanized mouse model for a bone and soft tissue sarco

Four small round cell malignant tumors of bone occurring in children are described. There was no catecholamine secretion and the clinical, radiologic, and biopsy diagnosis in each was Ewing's sarcoma. Glycogen was sparse both on imprints and in tissue sections. The tumors, when extensively sampled, had areas of a lobular growth pattern and Homer Wright rosettes. The rosettes were always focal and varied in complexity from case to case; they were rudimentary in one instance and markedly fibrillar in the most obvious instance. Neuron-specific enolase was demonstrated in tissue sections and in lo
