Prioritisation in speech and language therapy departments in Scotland and Malaysia.

This study investigates how prioritisation in health services have influenced speech and language therapy (SLT) services in Scotland in prioritising their caseload. Additionally, it evaluates how current prioritisation systems may contribute towards the development of the SLT service in Malaysia. Health, education and social agencies in Malaysia were contacted and a literature review was conducted. Information on prioritisation systems used in Malaysia was unavailable. Prioritisation systems from seven SLT departments within Scotland were investigated, of which three SLT managers took part in

Non-tuberculous pulmonary infections in Scotland: a cluster in Lothian?

BACKGROUND: A retrospective study was carried out to confirm the clinical impression that, in Lothian, non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections are as common as pulmonary tuberculosis. METHODS: All pulmonary isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis/bovis and non-tuberculous mycobacteria in Scotland from April 1990 to March 1993, and the notes of all patients with M malmoense isolates in Lothian, were reviewed. Information on mycobacterial culture procedures in Scottish laboratories was obtained as part of an audit project. RESULTS: Of all pulmonary isolates of mycobacteria in Lothian 53% (108/

Changing pattern of admission and operation for duodenal ulcer in Scotland.

To assess changes in the pattern of admission and operation for duodenal ulcer in Scotland, data recorded on Scottish Medical Records forms for the years 1975-1990 were analysed. The overall admission rate fell by 38 per cent from 157 to 98 per 100,000 population while the number of operations per year dropped by 80 per cent from 2955 to 582. There was a decline in perforation rate between 1975 and 1990 from 27 to 15 per 100,000 population. This general trend conceals a significant 93 per cent increase in the incidence of duodenal ulcer perforation among women aged 65 years and above, from 21

Haemolytic uraemic syndrome in the defined population of northeast of Scotland.

Twenty seven cases of haemolytic-uraemic syndrome (HUS) were admitted to the Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital between 1978 and 1989. All cases were from the defined childhood population of the Grampian region of Northeast of Scotland. Thirteen cases were admitted during the 2-year period 1987-1988 (Group 1). Of the 13 cases, 9 (Group 1 a) were admitted within the 11-month period between August 1987 and June 1988, and were from a small area (7 miles radius) within and around the City of Aberdeen. Their mean age was 7.1 years. Twelve cases of HUS were admitted between 1978 and 1986 and 2 cases

A survey of laboratory services for the diagnosis of Legionnaires' disease in Scotland.

As laboratory investigation is essential for the diagnosis of Legionnaires' Disease, the lack of immediate access to a suitable laboratory may result in under, or late, diagnosis. Recently, there has been emphasis on culture as the principal means of diagnosis. This survey describes the diagnostic facilities for Legionnaires' Disease in Scottish hospitals, particularly in relation to the role of the acting reference laboratory in Ruchill Hospital, Glasgow. Facilities have clearly been expanding, with six laboratories setting up local services since 1985. In 1990, 16 out of 36 laboratories (44%

Drinking habits in Finland and Scotland: a comparison of survey results.

An unusual opportunity to compare drinking habits in two countries in a technically satisfying way is offered by two surveys, one conducted in Scotland in 1972 by Dight and the other in Finland in 1976 by this author. Both Scotland and Finland represent ambivalent sociocultural attitudes toward alcohol, and the total alcohol consumption per capita is approximately the same in both countries. In Finland the distribution of alcoholic beverages is controlled by a state alcohol monopoly whereas in Scotland the distribution is in private hands and controlled by a very different system. Moreover, th

Virus infections in cattle and sheep in Scotland 1975-1978.

Over the four-year period 1975-78 attempts were made to identify virus in samples from 1231 outbreaks of disease in cattle, and 682 outbreaks of disease in sheep. A virus identification was possible in 26 per cent of these disease outbreaks. The nature and significance of these virus infections is discussed.

Current experience of neural tube defects in the West of Scotland.

The experience at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children,Glasgow, of infants admitted due to a neural tube defect has been reviewed. Two hundred and seventy-one infants were admitted in the years 1972 to 1978. In 1972 amniocentesis and in 1975 serum AFP screening were commenced in the region. Analysis of the results in Glasgow shows the latter programme to have resulted in the termination of 78% of these pregnancies complicated by the fetus having anencephaly but only 19% of those with spina bifida cystica. Spina bifida patients are a continuing medical and social challenge for which continued r

Zinc deficiency in the West of Scotland? A dietary intake study.

1. The intake of zinc in the West of Scotland was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry, in ninety-six items of food which make up the local standard diet for 1 week. 2. The diet contained less Zn than the recommended daily allowance ((US) National Academy of Sciences, 1974). This finding either indicates the need for a revision of the suggested allowances or suggests that a change of diet is necessary. 3. The change could be made simply by the substitution of wholemeal flour for white flour. Other changes in diet were considered but they were unlikely to be acceptable. Even with change

Cancer and heart failure: prevalence, incidence, and prognosis in Scotland.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Many patients with cancer develop heart failure (HF), and many patients with HF develop cancer. Inter-relationships between their natural histories are rarely reported. METHODS: Health records were obtained for a Scottish region. People aged >50 years were classified by the presence or absence of HF, loop diuretics (a pharmacological marker of congestion), and cancer. Incident cancer, mortality, and cause of death were recorded. RESULTS: Of 317 178 people aged >50 years, 11 268 (3.6%) had HF of whom 6276 were prescribed loop diuretics; a further 19 044 (6.0%) received lo

A retrospective audit of neonatal BCG vaccination in Grampian, Scotland.

Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine confers protection against tuberculosis (TB) and works most effectively when given to infants. Scotland runs a risk-based program in which BCG vaccine is offered to infants whose parent or grandparent was born in a high incidence country for TB. BCG vaccination records for all infants born in Grampian from 1st January 2019 to 31st December 2021 were reviewed from Nov 2022 to Feb 2023. Three electronic databases were examined, i.e. BadgerNet, Scottish Immunisation Recall System and TrakCare. Data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2013. Out of a total of

Prevalence of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy and Corticobasal Syndrome in Scotland.

INTRODUCTION: We estimated the point prevalence of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and corticobasal syndrome (CBS) at regional and national levels in Scotland, UK, as there are few high-quality prevalence studies of these conditions. METHODS: Nationally, multiple methods of case ascertainment were used including clinician and nurse specialist referral, searches of ICD-10 diagnostic coding in routinely collected electronic health data (Scottish Morbidity Record), and patient self-referral. In one region, we also searched GP databases and unselected hospital correspondence. Cases were veri

Epidemiological analysis of Legionnaires' disease in Scotland: a genomic study.

BACKGROUND: Legionella pneumophila is the main cause of a severe pneumonic illness known as Legionnaires' disease and is a global public health threat. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) can be applied to trace environmental origins of L pneumophila infections, providing information to guide appropriate interventions. We aim to explore the evolutionary and epidemiological relationships in a 36-year Scottish L pneumophila reference isolate collection. METHODS: We investigated the genomic epidemiology of Legionnaires' disease over 36 years in Scotland, comparing genome sequences for all clinical L p

Detection of Toxoplasma gondii in retail meat samples in Scotland.

Toxoplasma gondii is a globally important zoonotic parasite ranked as one of the most significant causes of disease burden among the major foodborne pathogens. Consumption of undercooked meat is a well-known risk factor for infection so the aim of this study was to investigate the presence of T. gondii in meat samples from retail outlets in Scotland. In Sampling Period 1, 300 meat samples (39 beef, 21 chicken, 87 lamb, 71 pork and 82 venison) were purchased from butchers', farmers' markets, farm shops and supermarkets, and in Sampling Period 2, 67 pure venison samples only were purchased from

Epidemiology of a bubonic plague outbreak in Glasgow, Scotland in 1900.

On 3 August 1900, bubonic plague (Yersinia pestis) broke out in Glasgow for the first time during the Third Pandemic. The local sanitary authorities rigorously tracked the spread of the disease and they found that nearly all of the 35 cases could be linked by contact with a previous case. Despite trapping hundreds of rats in the area, there was no evidence of a rat epizootic and the investigators speculated that the outbreak could be due to human-to-human transmission of bubonic plague. Here we use a likelihood-based method to reconstruct transmission trees for the outbreak. From the descripti
