OBJECTIVE: To explore barriers and facilitators to physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep among low-income older adults (OA) and people with limited mobility (PLM) in urban and rural Mexico.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study with twelve focus groups.
RESULTS: OA and PLM shared barriers and facilitators. Participants perceived more barriers than facilitators to physical activity, largely due to poor infrastructure, medical indications, physical fatigue, and safety concerns. Environmental factors such as noise, hot weather, insects, and screen use were shared barriers fo

OBJECTIVE: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a prevalent condition associated with significant disability, particularly affecting mobility and daily activities. Sedentary behavior is common among individuals with knee OA, influenced by factors such as pain, functional limitations, and sociocultural aspects. Despite the benefits of physical activity in managing knee OA, many patients remain sedentary. Understanding factors contributing to sedentary behavior and patients' preferences regarding physical activity is crucial for effective intervention. This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the level of p

BACKGROUND: Patients hospitalized with symptoms of acute coronary syndrome remain at high risk for adverse events postdischarge, highlighting a need for modifiable therapeutic targets. The role of sedentary behavior in this risk and the potential benefits of replacing sedentary time with other activities remain unclear. This study examined the association between sedentary behavior and 1-year cardiac events/mortality among patients evaluated for acute coronary syndrome and estimated risk reductions from substituting alternative activities for sedentary time.
METHODS: Patients presenting to th

BACKGROUND: Sedentary behavior (SB) is a risk factor for cardiometabolic disease. Existing cut-points of hip-worn accelerometers to quantify SB underestimate sedentary bout durations by ignoring posture. To address this, we previously developed CHAP, Convolutional Neural Network Hip Accelerometer Posture, a deep learning algorithm that predicts sitting and breaks from sitting. In this study, we applied CHAP to a randomized controlled trial to externally validate its accuracy for classifying sitting versus non-sitting and estimating intervention-related changes in SB.
METHODS: CHAP was applied

BACKGROUND: Older adults are highly sedentary, but research has not comprehensively examined the determinants of sedentary behavior (SB) in older adults.
PURPOSE: The present study sought to assess determinants of SB in older adults' everyday lives.
METHODS: Data were collected between 2021 and 2023. Over 1 year, older adults (N = 202, aged ≥ 60 years) participated in an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) study with three 14-day waves of data collection. At each wave, accelerometer-derived SB was assessed, as well as momentary reports of psychological determinants. To assess behavior-spec

INTRODUCTION: Epidemiological studies indicate that physical activity reduces cancer risk and mortality, while sedentary behavior exerts opposite effects. However, their impact on tumor metastasis remains unclear. This study investigated the effects of physical exercise and sedentary behavior on lung and liver metastatic growth in a murine colon carcinoma model.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male BALB/c mice were randomized into three groups: exercise (voluntary wheel running), sedentary (restricted cage size, no climbing), and control (standard housing conditions). After 4 wk, lung or liver metasta
