[The value of self-assessment in management of patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia].

Since benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a very common and slowly progressive disease which requires surgical treatment in only one-third of those affected, surveillance of the condition on the basis of subjective symptoms is of considerable importance. For this reason, the WHO developed a prostate symptom score (WHO-PSS or I-PSS), which includes both irritative and obstructive symptoms, and which has become accepted all over the world. This score can be used both in investigative studies as a means of monitoring the efficacy of therapy, and as a very good instrument for patient management

Perfusion scintigraphy in the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism: a self-assessment quiz.

The authors present ten case reports with lung scintigrams in a format suitable for a self-assessment quiz. The first seven cases include perfusion scintigrams and the final diagnosis was established by postmortem examination. The last three studies include ventilation images (using nebulized Tc-99m tin colloid) and the final diagnosis established by nonradionuclide studies. The authors believe this quiz demonstrates the necessity for ventilation studies when using lung scintigraphy for a positive diagnosis.

Understanding Self-Restraint in Neurodevelopmental Conditions: A Primer for Assessment and Treatment.

Self-restraint, characterized by self-initiated restriction of movement (e.g., intertwining limbs, sitting on hands), is most commonly observed in individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions who also engage in self-injurious behavior (SIB). These behaviors may serve to prevent SIB but can also cause injury and interfere with everyday functioning. Findings from past research suggest that self-restraint encompasses a heterogeneous class of behaviors and may serve multiple operant functions. We review conceptual models and empirical studies of the structural and functional dimensions of self-r

Development and validation of a novel self-assessment tool for breastfeeding mothers.

BACKGROUND: Difficulties with breastfeeding can lead to early breastfeeding cessation. Empowering mothers through self-assessment and education of breastfeeding skills can help support them. We aimed to develop and validate a tool for self-screening and education on breastfeeding skills. METHODS: A six-item tool was developed through literature review and expert interviews, covering domains of breastfeeding position, nipple shape, breast engorgement, infant latch, swallowing and intake. Eight experts assessed the tool's relevance, clarity, simplicity and ambiguity. Scores were used to determi

The assessment of caregiver self-efficacy in a virtual eating disorder setting.

BACKGROUND: Caregiver self-efficacy is thought to be a key component for successful family-based treatment (FBT) for individuals with eating disorders. As such, interventions aimed at enhancing caregiver self-efficacy, often measured via the Parents Versus Anorexia scale, have been a focal point of FBT literature. However, studies looking at the relationship between caregiver self-efficacy and treatment outcomes have been mixed. We aimed to better understand the influence of caregiver self-efficacy on eating disorder treatment outcomes during FBT. METHODS: Caregiver self-efficacy was measured

The Influence of Self-Reported Tobacco Use on Baseline Concussion Assessments.

INTRODUCTION: Baseline symptom, balance, and neurocognitive scores have become an integral piece of the concussion management process. Factors such as sleep, learning disorders, fitness level, and sex have been linked to differences in performance on baseline assessments; however, it is unclear how tobacco use may affect these scores. The objective of this study was to compare baseline concussion assessment scores between service academy cadets who use and do not use tobacco. METHODS: Cadets completed a standard battery of concussion baseline assessments per standard of care and were classifi

Validation of a visual-aided questionnaire for the self-assessment of hidradenitits suppurativa.

BACKGROUND: Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, highly debilitating disease. Few questionnaires have been developed to identify potential HS cases based on simple questions. A visual representation may help in characterising these lesions. OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a visually assisted questionnaire for HS detection. METHODS: This was an observational diagnostic study on a series of patients with a first diagnosis of HS and a corresponding series of age and gender-matched controls consecutively observed in two Italian centres. The questionnaire was developed based on a critic

Methodological considerations for assessing trauma history via self-report.

OBJECTIVE: One must first experience a traumatic event (Criterion A in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders; 5th ed.; DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013) to be diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Standard procedures for assessing Criterion A (i.e., the "worst-event" method) may result in misidentification of trauma exposure status. The purpose of this Internet-based study was to obtain an estimate of the percent of an adult sample that is misidentified as non-Criterion A through use of this method. METHOD: Two separate samples completed t

Abuse liability of mitragynine assessed with a self-administration procedure in rats.

RATIONALE: Substantial use of the plant kratom for psychoactive effects has driven interest in its abuse liability. Several place conditioning studies suggest abuse liability of the active ingredient mitragynine, though studies of its self-administration have not been published. METHODS: Binding of mitragynine to rat brain mu, kappa, and delta opioid receptors was compared to that for heroin and morphine. Self-administration of mitragynine, heroin, methamphetamine, or saline was assessed during single-session substitutions in rats trained to self-administer methamphetamine (0.022 mg/kg/inject

Self-assessment of anatomy, sexual sensitivity, and function of the labia and vagina.

Patient perceptions of genital esthetics are motivating requests for plastic surgeries that could change sexual sensitivity. There is little information about the sensitivities of labial and introital sites. The aim of this study is to assess the relationship between sexual sensitivity and self-reported sizes of labial and introital sites. Sixty-two healthy, sexually active, adult women (mean age 37.9, range 21-60) with no history of genital or vaginal surgery gave written consent to participate in this study. A modified version of Self-Assessment of Genital Anatomy and Sexual Function (L-SAGA

A simplified questionnaire for self-assessment of hirsutism in population-based studies.

OBJECTIVE: The measurement of excess body hair is not straightforward. As the modified Ferriman-Gallwey (mFG) score is unsuitable for self-assessment and requires specialist training, a short, self-administered questionnaire to identify hirsutism was constructed and validated for large-scale application, particularly targeting population-based studies. DESIGN: A validation study was conducted to assess a new hirsutism questionnaire. METHODS: A total of 90 women aged 35-72 years who were enrolled in the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil) were evaluated. A self-administ

Shame, rumination, and self-compassion in men assessed for hypersexual disorder.

A number of studies have linked maladaptive shame to higher levels of hypersexual behavior and tendencies to ruminate. However, little research has examined factors that may attenuate the negative impact that shame and rumination may have on hypersexuality. Drawing on data collected from male patients (N=172) assessed for hypersexual disorder in a DSM-5 field trial, path analysis was used to explore relationships among shame, rumination, self-compassion, and hypersexual behavior. The findings from this study showed that self-compassion partially mediated the relationship between shame and rumi

Association of genetic variants with self-assessed color categories in Brazilians.

The Brazilian population was formed by extensive admixture of three different ancestral roots: Amerindians, Europeans and Africans. Our previous work has shown that at an individual level, ancestry, as estimated using molecular markers, was a poor predictor of color in Brazilians. We now investigate if SNPs known to be associated with human skin pigmentation can be used to predict color in Brazilians. For that, we studied the association of fifteen SNPs, previously known to be linked with skin color, in 243 unrelated Brazilian individuals self-identified as White, Browns or Blacks from Rio de

Creation and test of a questionnaire for self-assessment of melanoma risk factors.

The objective of this study was to create a self-administrated questionnaire for people to enable them to assess their own melanoma risk factors. To test the validity of this questionnaire in a large prospective study, the answers given by the patient were systematically checked by his or her general practitioner. In this prospective study, the choice of questions was based on a review of the literature. The validity of the questionnaire was assessed by testing 1500 consecutive patients attending a consultation with their general practitioner. Considerable variations concerning the prevalence

Assessing cognitive deficits in bipolar disorder: are self-reports valid?

Patients with affective disorders frequently report problems with attention, concentration and memory, although little research has investigated subjective cognitive complaints relative to objective neuropsychological deficits. We compared subjective (self-rated) cognition and objective (clinician-rated) neuropsychological functioning in 37 DSM-IV bipolar outpatients. Subjects completed three standardized self-report inventories: the Cognitive Difficulties Scale (CDS), Cognitive Failures Questionnaire (CFQ), and Patient's Assessment of Own Functioning (PAOF). These were followed by a systemati

Assessment of mindfulness by self-report: the Kentucky inventory of mindfulness skills.

A self-report inventory for the assessment of mindfulness skills was developed, and its psychometric characteristics and relationships with other constructs were examined. Participants included three samples of undergraduate students and a sample of outpatients with borderline personality disorder Based on discussions of mindfulness in the current literature, four mindfulness skills were specified: observing, describing, acting with awareness, and accepting without judgment. Scales designed to measure each skill were developed and evaluated. Results showed good internal consistency and test-re

Limits of self-report in assessing sleep terrors in a population survey.

Sleep terrors are less frequent compared to other parasomnias, and there are no prevalence studies on adults. We performed a questionnaire study in a well-defined population-based sample, the Finnish Twin Cohort. The study population consisted of 11,220 subjects aged 33-60 years, responding to questions on the frequency of sleep terrors in childhood and as adults. In the first questionnaire about 9% reported sleep terrors often or sometimes in childhood, and 3.5% at least once monthly as adults. However, in a second more-detailed questionnaire, only 1% of those with at-least-monthly attacks in

Self-assessment of hearing problems in an elderly population. A longitudinal study.

As part of a large population study, 386 randomly selected probands 70 years of age, representative of the population of an industrialized Swedish city, were questioned regarding hearing difficulties in different social conditions. The same questions were presented to the participants of that study, at the age of 75 and 79 years. The results showed that of the 70-year-old persons, more than 95% had quite a good estimate of their hearing capacity. The subjective hearing problems increased with increasing age. However, at the age of 79 years, 86% still had no hearing problems or had only slight

Pain Assessment Using Self-reported, Nurse-reported, and Observational Pain Assessment Tools among Older Individuals with Cognitive Impairment.

Pain assessment in older individuals with cognitive impairment is challenging. Evidence on the performance of pain assessment tools in this population remains limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of self-reported pain, nurse-reported pain, and observational pain tools among older patients with cognitive impairment using a prospective observational design. In all, 152 older individuals admitted to the acute geriatric ward were recruited through convenience sampling. Three methods of pain assessment were compared: self-reported pain (SRP), observational pain using the P

Reliability and validity of the interRAI Check-Up Self-Reported (CUSR) Assessment.

BACKGROUND: As the global population ages, the need for community-based tools to assess the functional status and care needs of older adults is increasing. This study examined the reliability, validity, and feasibility of the interRAI Check-Up Self-Reported (CUSR) in a low-income urban district in Seoul, South Korea. METHODS: A total of 158 older adults participated in this study. The interRAI CUSR was administered by trained lay interviewers, and psychometric testing was conducted using interrater reliability, test-retest reliability, and criterion validity measures.
