BACKGROUND: Biases inherent in self-assessment of sun exposure and sun-safe behavior may lead to inaccurate conclusions about the effectiveness of sun-safety educational programs.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to compare self-reports to objective measures of sun exposure, when examining the effectiveness of passive versus active educational interventions.
METHODS: From May to June 2018, 73 participants recruited at a dermatology clinic were sequentially assigned to receive sun-safety education through one of 3 modes: interactive online module, video, or no education. A baseline Sun Exposure and Behav

Current approaches to falls prevention mostly rely on secondary and tertiary prevention and target individuals at high risk of falls. An alternative is primary prevention, in which all seniors are screened, referred as appropriate, and educated regarding falls risk. Little information is available on research designs that allow investigation of this approach in the setting of aging services delivery, where randomization may not be possible. Healthy Steps for Older Adults, a statewide program of the Pennsylvania (PA) Department of Aging, involves a combination of education about falls and scree

Online or other child sexual exploitation or abuse (OCSEA) perpetration prevention programs are designed to provide services to individuals prior to offending. There is limited research on OCSEA perpetration prevention programs in jurisdictions with mandatory reporting. The present study is a mixed-method feasibility evaluation of the OCSEA perpetration prevention therapy program, Talking for Change (TFC). The feasibility study broadly addressed whether adult clients could be recruited to the program, the clinical profile of clients, and their satisfaction with the program. In total, there wer

The Mais Médicos (More Doctors) Program (PMM) addresses shortages of doctors, one of whose objectives is to reduce regional inequalities in access to health care. This descriptive cross-sectional study evaluated service responsiveness and user satisfaction with PMM doctors among 263 users of the public health system in 32 municipalities with 20% or more of extreme poverty. Questionnaires of open and closed questions were used. Users were satisfied with patient-doctor relationships, information about diseases and treatment and the clarity and comprehensibility of medical indications. The doctor

A factor contributing to uncontrolled hypertension in older persons is medication nonadherence. Older Black men in a rural cardiology clinic were not taking blood pressure medication as prescribed resulting in uncontrolled hypertension. A nurse protocol to assist with self-administration of hypertensive medication was proposed to address the problem. This qualitative key informant study identified a purposive sample of 10 hypertensive Black men who were 65-70 years of age and nonadherent in taking their medication. The nurse conducted teaching sessions using the protocol to review evidence-bas

Young adult men (ages 18-24) who exit the juvenile justice system are at high risk for repeat offending. However, little is known qualitatively about the strategies that they use to navigate criminal influences, crime temptations, and the possibility of getting "caught." To address this gap, the authors used narrative methods involving 30 in-depth qualitative interviews with 15 formerly incarcerated young men between the ages of 19 and 24. Coding and memoing were used to identify major themes and data patterns. Results indicated two distinct groups; one group engaged in a series of micro-level

BACKGROUND: The long-term well-being of children with language impairment is an area of increasing interest to families, educators and employers as language impairment is often life-long. Furthermore, language impairment and psychiatric difficulty are known to overlap in both populations originally diagnosed as having language impairment and those receiving mental health services. However, there are currently little data available about the wider quality of life for people with language impairment, especially from the perspective of the young people themselves. There is a dearth of information

BACKGROUND: 18 advanced practice nurses (APNs) evaluated a two contact hour home-study computer-assisted instructional (CAI) program on the pharmacology of alcohol developed by the author. Changes in knowledge and self-efficacy were measured immediately following program use and 5 months later.
METHOD: The APNs were recruited from two seminar sections of a traditional lecture-based continuing education course for nurses enrolled in a primary care nurse practitioner program. Participants completed cognitive and self-efficacy instruments in class pre-program use and 5 months post-program use. T

INTRODUCTION: The PEACE Pack, originally devised to address bullying in secondary (high) schools, has demonstrated efficacy in several countries. The 4th edition now includes social-emotional learning and has been adapted (co-designed with teachers and students) for primary (elementary) schools, but not previously evaluated with this younger age group. As many young people now acquire personal phones at this age, it covers cyberbullying as well as 'traditional' bullying.
METHODS: This effectiveness study evaluated the program with 826 students (mean age 9.7 years) in Australia. Wellbeing (lev

Unpaid caregiving is a growing phenomenon, but many family members and friends fall into the role without any prior experience or training. Therefore, many individuals are unequipped with the necessary knowledge and skills needed to manage the demands of caregiving. The Caregiving Essentials course was created to meet the growing need for information and resources among unpaid caregivers of older adults in Ontario (Canada). The evaluation assessed whether the online knowledge intervention was effective in improving the following four areas from the experiences of the caregiver participants: 1)

An artificial replacement for a lost limb or portion of a limb, known as a prosthesis, is a tool that can assist a person to regain their independence. The aim of this project was to evaluate the effect of a self-care program for adults with lower limb prostheses. We used a quasi-experimental research design. We conducted our study at the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Rheumatology Center affiliated with the Armed Forces, located in the Al-Geza Governorate of Egypt using a purposeful sample of 81 adults with lower limb prostheses. We used two tools for data collection: a structured i

Forty nonalcoholic heavy drinkers were randomly assigned to receive a computer-based version of behavioral self-control training either immediately after pretreatment assessment or after a 10-week waiting period. Results at each of 3 follow-ups strongly support the study hypotheses. Participants in the immediate treatment group significantly reduced their drinking relative to their pretreatment levels and relative to those in the delayed treatment condition at the initial follow-up, 10 weeks after the pretreatment assessment. The delayed group did not change their drinking behaviors during thi

Anonymous testing of all newborn infants in 1988 revealed that one of every 61 babies born in New York City was HIV positive (New York City Department of Health, 1988). With the availability of new treatment, HIV positive children are living longer, often into their school years, and most are able to live at home. The majority of children acquire HIV through maternal transmission. Frequently, multiple family members are HIV positive. Parents, or other caregivers, are overwhelmed by depression, anxiety and grief, and urgently need childcare assistance. Finding childcare is difficult since famil

BackgroundStaff-assisted peritoneal dialysis (PD) can help overcome barriers to self-care but is not yet available in the United States (US). We developed and implemented a staff-assisted PD program that fits within current regulatory and cost restraints in the US healthcare environment.MethodsPatient care technicians (PCTs) were trained on PD procedures and troubleshooting common problems. The program expanded from two centers in August 2020 to sixteen by October 2022. We described the logistic elements of program delivery, and patient and treatment outcomes for patients discharged by end of
