Power assist systems (PAS) on manual wheelchairs (MWC) aim to enable functional mobility and support the health of MWC users; however, current Medicare policy prohibits obtaining a PAS prior to one year of MWC use. Clinically, the authors have observed that when people needing a wheelchair have difficulty propelling at times in an MWC, they are likely to pursue a power wheelchair since PAS is not an option in the first year of use. Therefore, this scoping review aimed to explore the evidence related to PAS use through the lens of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and

AIM: Assistive Technology (AT) facilitates daily life activities for individuals with disabilities and the elderly, helping them adapt to physical tasks and social interactions with family, friends, and colleagues. Despite its potential to promote autonomy and independence, numerous barriers often hinder AT's integration and accessibility. This research aims to systematically identify and analyse the barriers and challenges that hinder the widespread adoption and accessibility of AT and propose practical solutions to overcome them.
METHODS: A Systematic Literature Review (RSL) was employed as

Being deafblind means my perception differs profoundly from those who are conventionally sighted and have non-impaired hearing. A lot of hidden knowledge is to be found in the disparity between these differing experiences that could be of great value in developing assistive technologies that have a broad scope to engage with both disabled and non-disabled users. This article explores the balancing act between sensory loss and the potential inherent in all of us and how this should be part of the design process of haptic assistive technology.Facing the true impact of my sensory loss, I realised

In the field of health informatics, Artificial Intelligence (AI) heralds a new era of assistive technologies, redefining opportunities and challenges for persons with disabilities. This chapter will discuss the role AI plays in developing technological aids. However, to ensure these technologies genuinely promote equity and inclusion, it is essential to adopt a disability justice lens. It will further examine the transformative potential and limitations of AI-powered assistive technologies, identifying challenges through the disability justice framework. We argue that while AI holds promise in

In the field of EMG-based force modeling, the ability to generalize models across individuals could play a significant role in its adoption across a range of applications, including assistive devices, robotic and rehabilitation devices. However, current studies have predominately focused on intra-subject modeling, largely neglecting the burden of end-user data acquisition. In this work, we propose the use of transfer learning (TL) to generalize force modeling to a new user by first establishing a baseline model trained using other users' data, and then adapting to the end-user using a small am

BACKGROUND: In Canada, more than 60% of persons living with dementia reside in their own homes, and over 25% rely heavily on their care partners (ie, family members or friends) for assistance with daily activities such as personal hygiene, eating, and walking. Assistive technology (AT) is a key dementia management strategy, helping to maintain health and social support in home and community settings. AT comprises assistive products and services required for safe and effective use. Persons living with dementia and their care partners often require multiple types of AT to maintain their needs, d

Assistive technology can help people with disabilities to use computers more effectively and can enable them to access the same information and resources as people without disabilities. To obtain more insight into the factors that can bring about the design of an Emulator of Mouse and Keyboard (EMKEY) to higher levels of user satisfaction, an experimental study was conducted in order to analyse its effectiveness and efficiency. The experimental study involved 27 participants (Mage = 20.81, SD = 1.14) who performed three experimental games under different conditions (using the mouse and using E

Blind and Visually impaired people (BVIP) face a range of practical difficulties when undertaking outdoor journeys as pedestrians. Over the past decade, a variety of assistive devices have been researched and developed to help BVIP navigate more safely and independently. In addition, research in overlapping domains are addressing the problem of automatic environment interpretation using computer vision and machine learning, particularly deep learning, approaches. Our aim in this article is to present a comprehensive review of research directly in, or relevant to, assistive outdoor navigation f

PURPOSE: Eye gaze interfaces have been used by people with severe physical impairment to interact with various assistive technologies. If used to control robots, it would be beneficial if individuals could gaze directly at targets in the physical environment rather than have to switch their gaze between a screen with representations of robot commands and the physical environment to see the response of their selection. By using a homogeneous transformation technique, eye gaze coordinates can be mapped between the reference coordinate frame of eye tracker and the coordinate frame of objects in t

Power wheelchair users suffering from cognitive or physical impairment often face difficulties in maneuvering their wheelchairs through crowded environments. Currently, users need to be continuously aware of all traffic around them to actively avoid all collisions. This is an especially difficult task since many wheelchair users are unable to accurately view or perceive their surroundings. Additionally, imprecise joystick control, slowed reaction time, or imperfect interpretation of the environment can lead to unintended collisions with objects in the environment. This work looks to augment us

Family physicians commonly care for older patients with disabilities. Many of these patients need help maintaining a therapeutic home environment to preserve their comfort and independence. Patients often have little time to decide how to address the limitations of newly-acquired disabilities. Physicians can provide patients with general recommendations in home modification after careful history and assessment. Universal design features, such as one-story living, no-step entries, and wide hallways and doors, are key adaptations for patients with physical disabilities. Home adaptations for pati
